View Full Version : Bad level craze

I noticed something not too long ago. I've been looking at the download section of J2O and it seems that often times, bad levels get a lot of reviews. Many poor levels if you check, have as many as 10-25 ratings. Why is this? Do we have some sort of fascination with horrible levels? I think that by looking at the first 3-4 comments you'd get the message.

Also, another reason could be easy reviews. Three word comments followed by a rating of 1.0 just to give yourself a higher ranking as a rater. Sort of unfair, don't you think?

Either that or it's one big conspiracy...... *twitch*

I always try to write big reviews, and sometimes I download a level without any reviews and I rate it. And ofcourse I rate the Agam stuff too.

But I don't see too much bad levels with much reviews anyway.

It's probably because at bad levels, everyone wants to tell others how bad they are and to give the uploader tips...

hehe, don't guess so, its just to tear the maker down ;)

But for reviews, yes ppl should review more and not only because the 'big Shadow, Disguise or Agama' has submitted a tileset/lvl. I myself don't rate battle/ctf/treasure lvl because I don't really know how to rate, and to rate them you will have to test 'm with more ppl and stuff. But I do try to review every tileset. I don't say you have to review everything, but review as much as possible. The makers have spent much time on his/her work and it is nice to have some compliments/critics then.
It's pretty frustrating when you see your tileset/lvl having only 6 reviews and a few d/l's above there is a work of Disguise with 20 reviews....

Which still doesn't give you the right to rate your own levels.

well, you theoretically COULD review your own levels... but giving your own levels a rating is, well, KINDA FREAKIN' STUPID?!

...sorry, i felt compelled by an unknown force to do that. Shoot me before it gets any worse.

You can reveiw your own levels. I do it. (I don't post it, but still... :D) But you can't rate it.

Well, I just think its cuz we're all a bunch of jerks! No, seriously, I think it's cuz we try to help make them improve their levels. It's nice if you KINDLY say that the level sucks (i.e. "Hello good sir, do you know that your level sucks?") GWhahaha! Just Kidding of course! I think... But just tone down the reviews from "YOU SUCK!" to nice suggestions on how to make the levels better.

I think it's because people download it either way (generally). If it's really good, it strikes them, so they are compelled to review. If it's really bad, they are so shocked by it's overall badness that they just have to give a review. Also, if a level has a really high or really low review, people are curious to what exactly it is, in case it's another case of new raters (no offense meant to those who are) rating something horribly off target. More middling rated levels don't quite fall prey to these.

I don't think it depends on the level, I think it depends on the person who made it.
If some newbie made a great CTF level, and Cell did on same time, it would be Cell's level who would get many reviews.
I made a good Treasure with one of Amaga's tilesets, I was testing this by uploading the level with another username: Freezolf.

WELL,GUYS,YOU RATE IT THEN!!!
My own review was only there to have at least ONE rating.
If ANYONE would RATE it it's gone!:o

What?!? Newbies can make great CTF levels?? That'll be the day! You have to consider the fact that a CTF level is harder to make good than a battle level or any other gameplay in JJ2 (At least that's what I think).

You managed to contradict yourself with that statement. Sure, your treasure level got few reviews, but Agama practially came from nowhere (like a n00b) and uploaded some of the greatest tilesets on JJ2. He was able to get some of the highest ratings and most reviews on JCF. But then again, this might just be because it's easier to recognize a good tileset than a good CTF or battle level (though I doubt this is all true... maybe it was just the high rating that gets everyone to download it).

So I mainly agree with what Unknown Rabbit said, though MoonBlaze is right. Those levels made by newbies that you think will be bad are probably bad. So by instinct, you won't want to go out of the way to download some level you know probably won't be too good.

Oh, and I think it's just arrogant to think your own levels are good :p

Where is Agama actually? Did he stopt making Tilesets?

SoulFirE
Jun 20, 2002, 04:08 AM
I hope he is still making one..

But Moonblaze has a point. If someone well known puts something on J2O the reviews stream in (I won't begin about the ratings...). It's just a sort of rule over here, and the exception defines the rule, in this rule its Agama that came in as a noob and got an enormous amount of reviews. But normally only the 'oldies' get much reviews..

Sorry moonblaze. Actually it was ment as a little joke. And I did not say you suck at levelmaking :P

Hmm, BlurredD is right. I don't know what's so good about Carrottus Squash, but when a tileset or program is good, I see it directly. Weird :P

Carrottus Squash rules. Though there was a spelling mistake, because Carrottus is written with 2 Ts :p. But who cares =)?
