View Full Version : "Why don't we make JJ3"? Why don't we make JJ2!?

People've asked "why don't we make jj3". Well, I have a better idea: Why don't we (re)make jj2? The hardest parts of designing a game are planning and animating, developing a plot and gameplay style, and drawing thousands of little pictures. A plot and gameplay style for jj2 was already developed, and animations already made. Remaking JJ2 should be easy.
A while back I started a progect called "JJ2.5". I had it all planned out. I started good, added some cool new stuff, and almost had a good game, only there were some problems. I'll list all the stuff is did.
KEY:
( )- something I finished
(/)- something I didn't finish
(!)- something with a glitch

Okay, here I go:
( ) Gravity: works perfectly fine
(!) Springs: Works okay, but you get stuck if you touch the bottom
( ) Jumping: It works! Yay!
(!) Ducking: Screen stops following Jazz
(!) Uppercut: Screen stops following Jazz
(/) Helicopter: Nothing at all
(!) Punching(yay): Jazz occasionally gets stuck in walls when he punches them. If you hold the punch button, you go down at a 45 degree angle
(/) Sword: I planned this, but never made it
(!) Magic: I really screwed this up. Jazz can shoot somewhere between 1 and 5 fireballs, which hit multiple enemies sometimes. I gotta take this out =P.
(/) Gun: Now with all the ammo problems with magic! The gun would be more like a slot machine: "will I shoot or not?"
(!) Health: I havn't gotten it to appear in the corner, but Jazz DOES have about 5 hits. Enemies sometimes hurt more than once, and the small time when your flashing after getting hurt is gone, replaced by jazz looking very injured and sliding back a bit. I chose to use the "less bloody" version of this.
(!)Bad Guys: Robo turtles, two frames, walk back and forth, hurt jazz, enemies jump off the platform when defeated, and can be hit multiple times when in air before they hit the lava at the bottom of the level.
(!)Bosses: One done so far, he flies over you and shoots up to 50 fireballs a second. every single one hurts jazz. Defeated easily by uppercutting. Dosn't see Jazz when he's punching, uppercutting, or ducking.

Okay, thats a big list. That's why I gave up on JJ2.5. If anyone wants what I have so far, email me. I probably won't give it to you, but I'll send pics =P. It's made in GameMaker4.1. If anyone is interested, well, that's your problem.

...Interesting. Keep up the work.

The funny thing is I was last night thinking of a levelpack that was pretty much an entire game worth, except no new features (levels replace old ones) and was going to call it Jazz Jackrabbit 2.5. Very scary!

I already said I gave up on the project. I'd have to change the whole system to fix the scrolling problem... well, not really, but JJ2 just isn't worth the effort.

Oh, sorry. I misread your post.

If anyone wants what I have so far, they can have it. It's unlikely I'll ever finish this. Though I played jj2.5 a while ago, I forgot how fun it was =P. But I'm still not finishing it!

I had an idea like this not too long ago, but I thing I will create a whole new game and make it 3D. (I doubt I will ever create it though)

You could make a 3D game, but that's not the point of this topic. the point is that we could make a game just like JJ2, since all the planing and animations are completed, and then modify it to our hearts content (I think I spelled that wrong). Actually, yesterday I did play around with jj2.5 and the large lori anims... the outcome was better than I explected. I could always use the small anims for a "shrinking morph", but placement of the revert morph would pose some masking problems (like lori turning 10 times her normal size in a little tunnle). Some reason, when you get stuck in walls, it causes you to jump around randomly and through platforms.

Simple. We don't have the license.

As long as you don't sell it, you don;t need a liscense. It's just called a "fangame".

Unfortunately, "fangames" being massly distributed are just as illegal as games using an unliscenced engine or characters being distributed massly is. The law doesn't care if you're a fan or not.

Still, as long as the games are free, and not including stuff that's still for sale (like using Jazz.exe in a game), it's perfectly legal, or else other people that made Jazz games like Et would be in jail now (of course, I haven't seen Et for ages)

The characters are copyrighted

If anyone cared about that in the way I'm using the chars, how come nobody complained about Et's jj2 game? I'm just easier to complain about =P. Even that guy -> is laughing at me!

In what programming language is this game made?

Radium

Game Maker 4.2a. It sounds cheezy, but it's pretty nifty. It can make multiplayer games with internet play and everything, which is good also.

You're talking about making a whole game that could rival JJ2. That's not really considered a fangame to me

So? Game Maker can also use two programs called Anim8or and UVmapper. These can be used to make 3D games with Game Maker 4. There are also plenty of free game engines.

Yes, ET's game was illegal. Nobody cares because it is no threat to business at any of JJ2's producers. An entirely new game would be. Otherwise people could be running around, stealing things, any saying "Oh, but I'm a fan of this!" and it would be legal. This would be more than a fangame.

Yeah, and even if you were truly serious about buying the rights, as long as they (epic) are still even thinking about a Jazz 3 in the back of there mind, or a gameboy version, the rights would be pretty expensive. Maybe you could make a game, bazz backrabit, and change all the character names, appearances, plot, etc. but still use the same concept and other things, such as baddies, I doubt anyone would care, as long as you don't sell it, and you give epic some credit, but I am no expert on this.

Et's game technically was an entirely new game, and the game I'm making isn't meant to "rival" jj2. I'll try to make it worse than jj2, then, when jj2's rights become free for grabs, I'll make a better game. This isn't any more legal or illegal than Et's game, just... "better".

JanusJackrabbit

Why not make an entirely new game that would rival JJ2. The name, plot, characters, and aspects of the game could be changed(including making it 3D). It would give Epic a run for their money, Maybe they would decide to make JJ3 if our game became popular.

Because thats not the point of this topic. The point is that we could use the gameplay style and some of the animations from jj2 to make a free game, and save thousands of dollars on animators, programmers, game designers, and music producers. If you really want to make your own 3D game, and are willing to hire the workers yourself, then feel free to do so. JJ2 is a fun game, but I wouldn't pay thousands of dolllars in a cheap plan to get jj3. About 50% of the topics in this forum have "lets make jj3" somewhere in them. People don't seem to understand the difficult in producing a game from scratch, and never really notice until they try. The whole point of this topic is that we could remake jj2 ourselves, remove glitches, and add everything that people said "I wish was in 1.25". But still, if you REALLY wanted to help JJ3 become a reality, ask Epic for the rights and DON'T mention you're from jcf:p. You'll probably get the rights for $6.95.
