I was just wondering, what are gems actually for? In the official and in costum SP episodes, they're everywhere, but I've never figured out what you need them for, other than to win Treasure hunt.

Collect hundred and get an extra life at the end of a level.
Bleh.

Well, I dunno, but I never got any extra lives for gems. I finished a level with over 400 (a costum one) and still had just as many in the next level.

Same at me, tried it in all episodes, but none worked.

The gems were originally meant to unlock the bonus levels (collect 100 to enter them). However, those levels never came to completion (lack of time, maybe?), so the gems were reduced to decorative items (it is fun trying to find some ;))

They were probably supposed to get you to bonus levels, yes. Probably from 100, as it stops counting after 100. Although in Rabbit in Training, it says (to the order of) Collect 100 gems to get an extra life. In Treasure Hunt, of course, they let you win if you have enough. In Single Player, coins turn to gems once you've gone through a coin warp, so this is one more (albeit useless) use of them.

Also, there's the fact that they are worth points in single player and used (a lot) in treasure. They are Jazz 2's answer to "the useless item that is for nothing except getting points" in many ways, though I'm sure they weren't intended to be that way. If you go through the training level, it is stated that a hundered gems equals one life. Of course, they never actually added this to the game, but at least it sheds some light on what they were intended for.

Not to mention there would be no treasure mode without gems. Without treasure mode, there would be no mode where it was impossible to kill opponents, (excluding server types you can get to work, kind of, with XJJ2) so several gametypes would not exist.

They are still pretty useless in single player, though they make levels look more professional when used well.

Trafton: clarification edit.

hahaha, wisetea =P

Yes, gems were meant to get an extra life at 100, but that fell through. I don't see why...that whole concept doesn't strike me as one that would be too difficult to implement for the programmers, but whatever, they left a lot of stuff incomplete.

NOW they just make a level look better and can get some points, plus ig you type in jjgems a lot then you can get interesting results when you end a level and it shows your number of gems. WORD.
