View Full Version : Jazz UT model (wasn't sure where to put this)

hey. (yea, I know there's probobly a better place for this)
I recently started playing UT, and was looking for a Jazz model, but unfortunately, no Jazz model was ever made.
But I remembered that the Jazz3 beta, using the same engine, was built with relatively the same structure as UT.
So, I was wondering if there's a possibility that the Jazz model file from JJ3 could be importable into UT.
I know literally nothing about UT's model/skin structure, but maybe someone with some knowledge on the subject could belp me out...

This topic has, in fact, came up before (there is a topic called "To the future" by Red in the Future of Jazz forum about it) and the general idea is that, yes, it's quite possible. The problem would be that to distribute this mod would be illegal because it's just liscenced characters without the consent of the owners of the character liscence. This is quite possible, but legal issues would stop it from being given out unless it was given out illegally like the Jazz 3 demo was. It's still an interesting idea, though.

Noog has it methinks, and a few things on his site about it.
As it says though, it wasn't boned properly.

I'm not sure, would it be entirely compatible with UT? Don't UT models need extra info like where the "head" is supposed to be to account for head shots, how the body can gib apart when blown up, stuff like that that wouldn't (shouldn't) exist on a JJ3 model?

The character needs to be exported and imported into the UT editor, at which I believe it can sometimes lose its bone structure entirely, meaning you'd have to redo it. As it stands, it requres extra animations, hitbox information, bones, joints (it wasn't boned properly either) and new animations. Since it wasn't boned properly you'd have to rebone than animate or try animating with the skeleton already there, which would be a pain. Add the fact that by today's standards the model is ridiculously low poly and the textures are a very small size, it'd be better if somebody remade a high poly Jazz from scratch for UT2K3.

Ridiculously low-poly? I'll take that as a compliment ;)

Don't get me wrong, it is a nice model. ;) Nowadays though models use 3000+ polys average. UT2K3 has maybe 3000 polys average for its models, JK2 maybe 2000 polys.
But for example, the snouty-thing (is that a snout? or a nose? I dunno what it's called, do rabbits have snouts? :)) doesn't use alot of polys from what I can tell, it's sort of a pyramid stretched out with a few polys in there. I do love the way the model runs though, especially strafing. :)
Oh, I can't resist either: OMG IT'S NOOGYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D
Okay. I've compared the current Jazz 3D model and the other UT models in UnrealEd and it appears the Jazz model does not have all the animations required for UT (like talking animation). I'd do this myself if I was able to do the converting manually.
Ow wait! I don't have 3DS Max!
HaH! I knew you were there!
I have 3ds Max... O.o... or do I? Shame I can never find the time to model.

Noogy? Is it legal to distribute the 3D jazz model file on the internet or does epic "own" it?

Epic owns the rights for the character.
But I have no clue if this just is for the name Jazz Jackrabbit. Or for every green bunny with a bandana.

In my opinion, I don't think that Epic would care.. it's just a model, and if it's being used in THEIR game anyway, what's the harm?
I mean, Sega didn't care when they made a Sonic model for Quake 3, and they never made the game (although they make sonic appear in almost every game they make.)
Anyway, if it's not too much trouble, I'm sure Noogy or someone else in the Jazz community could add the proper animations to the Jazz model, or possibly make an updated version with a higher number of Polys.

Moonblaze is right. The Jazz liscence is not dead, so they'll want money for Jazz to be used. Assuming that they wouldn't care is a bad idea, and legally dangerous. However, if we got their consent (which is unlikely) it would be legal.

But even if it is legal to use the model, the question is if Noogy will give it to us. Don't forget, Ninja Dodo (I think it was him) made a 3D model for the movies in the Lost World pack.

Yeah, how do you know when using someone else's character is legal or not? If Sega had no problem with a Sonic Quake 3 model which was also ported over for use in Elite Force (and I love to use it in Elite Force), how can you know when or if other companies will care about doing it?
Getting permission would be the best thing, if you could do that. Besides it would be good for Epic. It would show that people like to play as Jazz still and it makes their Unreal franchise more interesting to use. It's free advertising for Jazz if you think about it.
Well I don't really know how it works. All I can say is if you are going to do it, please really study Jazz in 3D. Look at him from the 3D bonus stages from Jazz 1, look at a lot of his sketches. Maybe draw him in 3D first (front, side, 3/4, back), and then model based on that. This would be really cool. If it would be made for Elite Force (or someone can convert it) I would be able to use it too then.

Hey, Noogy, are you there? Can we pleeeeeeeeeeese have the JJ3 Jazz model?

If I knew how to make a model, knew how to implement it into a game, had a good game to implement it into and had a tinge of artistic talent, I'd have made a model a long time ago. :p But I'll just stick to level making thank you. :p

I'm here. As much as I (and I'm sure Epic) appreciate your interest in the model, Jazz is indeed copyrighted.
If it were a character of my own design, sure, I'd give him out. But Jazz and the model are strictly owned by Epic, and it would be a crime to distribute their intellectual property.
That said, I'm glad you care enough for the green bunny. The model needs to be re-rigged, re-animated, and basically updated for higher-poly engines. That wouldn't take me long as I could essentially rebuild him in a day. But it's not exactly something I want to do (I'm too busy on my film (http://www.elysiantail.com) after all).
However, if a fan is up to the task, then by all means send photos of the model to Epic, I'm sure they'd love to see fan-art like that!

I'd be more than glad to try, but I'd need 3DS Max to do so.
I'd actually like to try and build one from scratch and port it to UT2K3 but no modelling program to do so with.

Btw, dont worry about the low poly thing, thats almost too easy to fix in 3D Max, pity my trial ran out, stupid expensive programs. If there was a way to get the proggie, I would, just too expensive so I'll stick with PSP ownage and tilesets for now :D

Woah Noogy post a couple of replys and people go crazy. I'd say he is the only one of the Jazz team (apart from Cliffy B who seems tobe taking a small intrest in Jazz) who cares about Jazz2 anymore. Glad to see him here :D

Yup, Noogy is the man. :D
I'd call CliffyB the man as well, but teh speech binder in UT2K3 doesn't tell you who said what; gotta manually bind that in my ini, grr. ;)

Um. yeah, there was once an idea created by me to have a mod for UT2K3 and make it as close as Jazz Jackrabbit as possible, without violating copyrights. I must say, that project is pretty much dead until I get UT2k3. I'm involved in too much of getting Rabbit Force finished, at least the demo. I might work on it later. And yes, I have 3Ds Max. I can model a bit ;)
