Hey, piece of advice if you're planning on taking on the JJ2-source code:

Instead of focussing on implementing new gameplay-modes, focus on implementing some sort of scripting/plugin-support that will allow the user to modify things enabling them to e.g. create new party-modes.

Thus, when someone creates a new party-mode other users only need to download the plugin and install that. If there's an update you'll only need to update the plugin and not the entire main-JJ executable.

Also, keeping one main version of JJ (v1.25? http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) avoids confusing. Imagine everyone creating their own version of JJ2!! AAAAARRRGGGGHH!!

BTW If someone is to tackle on the source-code, update some stuff like the music-/sound-engine while you're at it. Don't y'all hate it when you've picked some music and JJ2 totally scr*ws it up? And how's about fixing some of those notorious B.U.G.'s? http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Sheesh, I'm sure he won't like to spend his entire time working on all the little extras all you ask for. Team Battle is prolly the most wanted feature (and a VERY nice one to get the clans going) so I'll take that. Fixing all the bosses and stuff will take time. Oh, Haze, what you mentioned there will take AGES. Why not just cash out the source code instead? There are enough programmers to work with it.

Shadow GPW (boss), if you see this post: Remember that e-mail you gave me? http://jazz2.nagcentral.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif Well, I WANT IT AGAIN! I lost it when I sold my PC to Commander Dats.

Fixing the unfinished events would make gameplay more interesting. And making Devan a playable character would be even more of a good thing.

Besides that, there could also be a way to equalize jazz 1.23 and the secret files, something that would take away the cove between the two split parts of the community.

If there are enough programmers, why not let all of them do a small part to all of this and have a forum of some kind to get all the bugs to fix and all the unfinished events.

There could even be a jcs upgrade to make events placable on ALL LAYERS.

Lamer
May 27, 2001, 06:51 PM
One thing's for sure, it wasn't made using just one language. Also, you don't have to beg Arjan or any of the JJ2 programmers for the source code, if it's just the uncommented source code you want, you could get the latter by using a decompiler, if you can find a good one.

Violet CLM

I know the source code. Arjan told me not long after I started playing JJ2 because he wanted me to help build version 1.26 (there is also an unrealised 1.25, if y'all are wondering).

It has Team Battle, a Treasure mode where roasts are possible called Goldrush, and an every man for himself CTF called Stand Alone.

It has Lori, also, and Devan is in there as a playable character until we decided that the rabbits were enough. If you can find Devan's number, you can use him.

Please do not ask me for the code, as I am a sucker and may break and give it out. 1.26 is available for those who personally email Arjan praising him as god.

I can tell ya how to "make" 1.25 or even 9.42356.423 just open Jazz.exe in a hex editor and whereever it says 1.23 change it to X. As in X=version you want.

Easy as that. But then it will be like "joining" a TSF server with 1.23.

Hmmm, I wouldn't do it illegally.

The last way Arjan could make some cash outta JJ2 is if he could sue all of us who illegally used his code. I nkow it's pretty mean and most of you will knock me on the head for even saying somehting like that, but it is a possibility, and I'm not prepared to take the chance.

I'm willing to pay, but I have a low budget, a VERY low budget, I just hope it wouldn't be too much. The way I know source code, it prolly will.

I'm pretty sure it's written in C++, and some of the controls at the time were only supported by the revamped language to avoid complications. They seemed to have jumped the language gap completely to the most flexible language available, which can only be a good thing.

Wild: Actually, I did have and play JJ2 in 1998 (I had a 50 MHZ computer at the time. I would get 7-10 FPS on single player, 3-4 on multiplayer.) I don't remember an Arjan playing JJ2 at the time, though. I only started playing more the next year when I got a new computer. Nevertheless, I only remembered Arjan making a 1.23 patch and nothing else. Jeh was probably the most active on the highest end of the community, which wasn't very active at all after the official release.
