Celebrating the festive season I figured I'll hold this lil tileset competition. This has been discussed in #jcstalk just before I posted it hereAnyways, theres lots to it and unlike other competitions this one has a huge set of rules and restrictions to it, lemme start to explain.

The tileset you will make will have various restrictions, BUT you have the option of choosing between one of two restrictions:

<b><u>OPTION 1:</u></b>
You can have any amount of colours and can do whatever they want to the Jazz palette, but can only use 40 tiles.
Empty tiles are counted aswell, if JCS says its 40 tiles even if only 30 were used then it's a 40 tile tileset. This does mean that effectively you only get 39 tiles to use.
People who use less won't get bonus points, use as many tiles as you can!

<b><u>OPTION 2:</u></b>
You're can ONLY use 16 colours. However, the Jazz palette will still be included in your tileset, but you're not allowed to use them or change other colours to fit their entries. The 16 colours you want to use should be placed in another location in the palette. If for any reason you do want to use some of the colours in the Jazz 2 palette, add them at the location of your 16 colours. The transparent colours in JJ2 (pure black and the blue) do NOT count as one of your 16 colours.
Why am I doing this? Simple, JJ2 <b>NEEDS</b> those colours to work correctly, cant go any other way.
If you are struggling with the palette work for this then I will do that and make it JJ2 compatible myself (with no penalty for the person that does it). Just send me the tileset using 16 colours. This will give people who are forced to use MSPaint a chance in the competition.
<b>Tip:</b> Dont use a single colour gradient (like all shades of blue for example, as in my blue world tileset) because I will not like you for it. You've been warned.
Because of the colour limitation the amoutn of tiles you are allowed to use has been doubled! You can use 80 tiles. Empty tiles are counted aswell, if JCS says its 80 tiles even if only 70 were used then it's a 80 tile tileset. This does mean that effectively you only get 79 tiles to use.
People who use less won't get bonus points, use as many tiles as you can!

<b><u>OPTION 3:</u></b>
Same restrictions as Option 2 (16 colours and 80 tiles) but with the following change:
The Jazz palette must be edited to only use 16 colours (excluding the transparent colours) and NO OTHER palette outside of the edited Jazz palette entries may be used. Added this option because some poeple just love custom sprite colours :D
Option 2 and 3 will be regarded as one option when it comes to prizes because there is almost no difference between the two.

<b><u>Rules for all Options:</u></b>
1. Your tileset must include the following tiles:
-Vine
-Hook
-Poles
-Sucker Tubes
-Destruct Block/s
-Arrows
-Text sign
-Exit sign
-Background Layer eye candy
The background layer eye candy can be anything. As long as the tileset isn't layer 4 only.
2. You can't save space by making one side of tiles and flip them in JCS.
3. You can't have multiple entries. You must choose between option 1 and 2, can't choose both.
4. FINAL Deadline is 24th December 2002, Winner will be announced on Christmas day (the day after deadline).
5. You're welcome to include an example level or music or anything else, but these wont be rated.
6. If you send your entry before the deadline and want to change something, you are welcome to resend the tileset.
7. Don't ask me to comment on a tileset before the deadline, because I won't, guaranteed.
8. If for any reason you do not meet the restrictions (say for example you accidently used 17 colours instead of 16) for one of the options then I will notify you and give you a chance to resend a version that does meet the restrictions. This does not apply if the tileset was sent on the final deadline, It wont give me time to send it back.

<b>PRIZES:</b>
This is what you've been waiting for :D
Best tileset of Option 1: £10
Best tileset of Option 2 and 3: £10
Overall Winner: £20 (excluding the cash from the option you won).

This means that the winner will have £30 and the person who won the other option will win £10. Say for example there are 5 tilesets in option1 that are better than the best tileset in Option 2 (and 3 after changes) then Option 2 will STILL win the £10 instead of the other people. Note that this is just an example and I'm not saying option 1 makes better tilesets. Both options have been explained to various tileset makers and the choice between the two are pretty even.

I know that not all of you are from the UK, so I'll give estimates on what its worth in other popular currencies.

£30 = $45 = €45 (euro)
£20 = $30 = €30 (euro)
£10 = $15 = €15 (euro)

That should be all you need to know, if there are any questions ASK ME!
ICQ = 18989030
MSN/Email = disguise@surfanytime.co.uk
AIM = DisguiseDA
IRC = #jj2 or #jcstalk (preferred for JCS related stuff) on Quakenet

Out of those you stand a pretty good chance of finding me on AIM and IRC, I check my email every now and then but I barely use ICQ and MSN.

-Vine

Destruct blocks. Buttstomp block too?

Poles: h-pole and v-pole?

2. You can't save space by making one side of tiles and flip them in JCS.

Does this count for arrows + background layer eye candy too?

Hmm... Sounds interesting. I might enter just for the sake of entering (like in the CTF comp.) But, as most of you may know, I can only use MS Paint. Stupid Paint. Oh well, if I get a chance I'll make a set.

(Um.. Disguise might have to edit the pallette, or something. Not sure how you do that, but I've got Paint.)

gaaah I hate mondays, feel liek im gonna explode. I'll post all questions as fats as I can here then its off to bed.

1. I can do palette fopr peiople who choose option 2

2. Both v and h poles

3. Any dblock, it could even be a normal single tile block that looks liek a dblock

4. Just left and right arrows, other 2 are useless

5. It's tiny, thats the point, with option 1 ur supposed ot make a good set from amazing quality tiles. In option 2 u make a good set with a great variety of tiles. Choose the one you're better at.

6. I can get 28 tiles leftover with all the requitrements already drawn, its possible :p

7. No you can't fix pinball or snow. Wanna fix up the palette? choose option 1. Option 2 is only your 16 colours and option 3 is only fixing up default jazz2 palette

8. Snow palette locatrions are in articles section, pinball locations are in JCS talk, a few posts down i think.

9. Tip: dont use a single gradient, it looks boring and I wont like it, so dont make a total red world :P

10. Option 2 is 80 tiles

11. Use paint, send me the bitmap of finished tileset (using 16 colours) and I'll fix it up. This is option 2 only to make this competition paint compatible. I'll send you finished set after palette edit aswell.

Done, sleepy time, bye bye

One more question: Can I put the 16 colors i use into the Textured Background?Your textured background won't work anyway, unless you make a gardiant on at least 16 colors, and then you break up the rule with having only one gardiant.

I'll just re-answer the stuff moonblaze answered to annoy him some more ;)

1. Yes you can put the same colour more than once in your palette. If you weren't able to Option 3 would become useless and impossible. It would be stupid with option 1, because of a waste of colours, though I would congratulate the person who managed to fill up a whole palette from a 40 tile tileset. It's very hard to do, but not impossible :p
No I didn't just say the person who manages to use all 256 colours will get bonus points of any kind, don't waste your time trying to find a way to fill an entire palette of 256 colours.

2. You can put the 16 colours in your textured background, but a textured background needs 32 colours. Even if you do slim it down you're gonna have a single gradient, and I already warned you about using those ;)
Not having a textured background is not a rule, if you can manage to make one go ahead, but the possibility of one wieghs greatly against you :p

3. Looked back and noticed that I forgot to answer another question from frankenquist. You can't flip ANY tiles, arrows and background layer eye candy is included.

Oh by the way I'vealready got a submission, ph33r!
Hehehe, don't let that rush you though, take your time ;)

Today I got a ray of inspiration for a new tileset. If I can manage to keep my tileset under 40 tiles, I'll use that as my entry for option 1.
I'm allowed to upload the tileset AFTER the competition right? Like if I now make a 40 tiles long tileset, I can later release a let's say 800 tiles long tileset on J2o?

Oh, and am I allowed to host and use the tileset before 24 December or should it be kept 'secret'?

However, if you're gonna upload it before the release date know that you're doing it at your own risk. I will <b>NOT</b> disqualify any entries that steal from your tileset, whether they are ideas or ripped tiles.

Okok, here's the comments and winners you've been asking for ;)

First of all, thanks to all of you who entered the contest, I really appreciate it <s>when you guys try to TAKE MY MONEY!</s> ;)

Out of the total of 13 entries, 7 were for Option 1, 5 were for Option 2 and one brave tileset maker had an entry for Option 3 :D
Now for the comments on the sets:

<font size="4"><B>Option 1:</b></font>

<b>Volcano</b> by FireSword <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Volcano.zip">download</a>

Really not a bad set. I was impressed by the texture and quality of the normal tiles, definitley a winner in that category, and you even managed to fit in different variations of the same block. The theme is good too, with some nice ideas for background eyecandy. It has a few letdowns though where the set could've been improved. Sucker tubes were the first, the quality doesnt quite match up with the rest of the tileset. Second one is that black block. Definitley could've used some texture, you had a lot of colours to play with. It's funny how one tile can make such a big difference, but in this case it does, the amount of space it occupies on the screen is a lot. I can tell you now if you improved the background this would've been an option 1 winner ;)
I hope more time and work will be spent on this tileset, it's got great potential.

<b>CD2 (Cool Day 2?)</b> by Ice M A N <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/CD2.zip">download</a>

Hmmm, Icey told me he rushed this a bit, and it shows. It's an average set overall, but there are some weird elements to it. The perspective isn't constant, the sucker tubes are different to the normal tiles, and the other thing that's a bit weird is the theme. Well, there really isn't a solid theme. There is some grey for the blocks, green for the surface, some purple background stuff, brown tubes and the destruct block is another colour aswell. My favourite part of this tileset has to be the example level by far! (jk }>)

<b>Windstorm Fortress</b> by BlurredD <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/wsfort.zip">download</a>

Very nice tileset, the background on this one is really well done for the amount of tilespace given. The normal blocks are pretty much near perfect in their design, with the rough little border and the smooth texture on it, looks great. The one problem I do have with it though is the theme. Everything is just a bunch of blocks (Mez-like). Its a pretty obvious choice in small tilesets, squeezing it down to the basics saves a lot of tilespace, but you pay a big price in forms of eyecandy. The other problem I have is the amount of colours used, the whole tileset is some form of grey (excluding the tubes and signs).

<b>Iron Crown</b> by CelL <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/IronCrown.zip">download</a>

Yet another great tileset. Has a nice variation in colour, very good (and original in a way) theme to it and a nice amount of extra eye candy. Enough to give it the option 1 winner status. As for looking for at negative points in the set, I couldnt find any. There was a small mistake in colours in the mountain tile (3 down, 3 across), but its barely noticeable and shouldnt make a difference. It's funny, this set hasn't got the best background, or the best normal tiles, but it has no real big negatives that could've been improved a lot. A balanced tileset is always the best tileset :D

<b>Cracco Mini</b> by CraccoBoy <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/CraccoMini.zip">download</a>

Hurray for the christmas themed tileset! The only christmas entry in the contest, and as a christmas tileset I must say it does a very good job. The theme is bright and colourful, and has a christmas tree to complement it all. Only problem I have is that there is a lack of background eyecandy, a christmas tree every now and then isn't enough to fill up the blue background, but 40 tiles is a big limitation for those kinda things.

<b>Grapevine</b> by Acid <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Grapevine.zip">download</a>

An average set. I can't help but think the background is too bright. Running around in the example level can get confusing after a while. The texture on the normal tile looks a bit strange, it doesnt ttile that well and seems to be a bit blocky. My biggest complaint is the lack of diagonals, every tileset should have diagonals, they give so much more to a levelmaker to play with. Having only one destruct block and using those extra tiles for diagonals would be a better choice imo.

<b>Terrestial World</b> by Red XIII <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Terrestial World.zip">download</a>

Red told me he had some problems with the set, but still submitted it, YaY for Red for doing this. I'm guessing he had a problem with the textured background, as that doesnt work, but there is no law that says every tileset should have a working textured background, so I'm not too bothered about that. The theme is very strange (hence the name), I've never really seen a totally purple tileset before. There are two main problems to the set, the one is a lack of background eyecandy, a raindrop will never do the trick. The final one is the lack of tiles. There are no real border tiles to the blocks, so everything just ends up ebing 'cut off' at places. Once again an attack of the tileset limit }>

Before I move on to option 2, there is one thing I want to say. I have <b>NEVER</b> had such a hard choice in choosing a winner. The tilesets made by CelL, BlurredD and FireSword were as close to each other as it gets, I've tested them over and over for hours thinking which one is the winner. It's like choosing between cornbread, gingerbread and pie. Congrats to all three of you for the effort, hope to see more tilesets from you in the future! :D

<b>Dark Marshland</b> by Moonblaze <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Contest entry by Moonblaze.zip">download</a>

This was the first entry that I got, and I was really impressed by it! It was exactly what I was looking for in a tileset for option 2. Didn't have a single gradient, had all the necessary tiles, and a lot of effort into a nice background with the extra tiles. I was pretty sure this was a winner through most of the contest, but it got beaten by a later entry. Can't really find anything bad about the set to comment on, good job!

<b>Grassland Paradise</b> by Another Jazz 2 Fan <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Grassland Paradise.zip">download</a>

If i'm not mistaken AJ2F had to draw his tileset in paint, which is a great feat on its own. However, that leaves the tileset to look very 'MSPainty' with very little to do to make it look otherwise. The textures could be better, but once again thats part of the limitations to paint. If there were any real improvements that could've been done not regarding paint issues I think more background eyecandy would be better.

<b>Fluff for Thought</b> by Toxic Bunny <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/FluffFT.zip">download</a>

I don't know if this is christmas themed or not, I think it's somewhere on the border, but I can say one thing for sure though, this tileset is fluffy! The design of the tileset isn't bad, has a nice range of background and foreground eyecandy aswell, but the main problem I have is the lack of colour. Everything in layer 4 is white (excluding the tubes). Some multicoloured fluff would look better (but be harder to make with 16 colours).

<b>Small Factory</b> by Violet CLM <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/SmallFactory.zip">download</a>

We all love colour reduction in programs like Paint Shop Pro, until it goes wrong. This set is a good example of that. The background eyecandy looks great, but the actual tiles in layer 4 suffered a lot from colour reduction. Tilesets should be fairly balanced, and a ba;ance in quality between the tiles is no exception.
Just got an idea on this set, the yellow platforms could be made thinner, that always smooths out the gradient.
I'm curious to see the normal version of this, I'm sure its great ;)

<b>Rootalopicus</b> by ET <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Rootalopicus.zip">download</a>

This isnt a great set, this is an AMAZING set! Really I've decided to leave the best for last this time, this is by far the competition (and Option 2+ 3) winner. FOUR different colour hues were used, each with only four colours, and when you look at the tileset you cant even notice it. I checked three times to make sure there weren't any extra colours, and had to zoom in on the tileset by a considerable amount just to notice the four different colours. The whole tileset is smooth, and the detail put into the textures and drawings such as the branches (that I have almost mistaken for being Jungle brances at first sight) are amazing! The example level is also great for showing it all off, so many possibilities. This is a MUST DOWNLOAD. Way above my expectations, and could even compete as a great tileset against normal tilesets with no limitations. Congrats to you ET!

<b>Chez2</b> by N0body <a href="http://users.surfanytime.co.uk/disguise/contest/Chez2.zip">download</a>

The only tileset entry for Option 3. I must admit this was a hard one because of all the colour hues that had to be fitted into 16 tiles. The set itself has a strange theme (if any), filled with orange tiles and a green mesh for background eyecandy. If anything I can say it is blocky, but doesn't have much in regard for eye candy.

And there you have it! Hours of typing and judging And I've managed to finish it all by christmas day for most of you, except the winner, but I've congratulated him already.

Whev, this was sort of a fun contest. I must admit that I expected Mirrow or ET to join the contest and win.
If I'm lucky anyway, I can get Disguise to make me a cool signature image. ;P

Wohhoooooo, yay! :D What a great Xmas prezzie. Now I can make Disguise go broke :p jk ;). I would like to thank everyone who joined and contributed to the competion and I'd like to congratulate my mate Cell for winning Option 1 and my mate Moonblaze for almost winning winning option 2 ;) . To all those of you who couldn't get your entrys in on time, make sure you enter any future competitions ;). Remember, sacrifices have to be made. I got a 'C' in my LOTE ( languages other than english ) subject because I was working on my tileset instead of my homework ;). Thanks to Wisey for hosting this competition and for not entering it ;) Its produced some quality tilesets which is great for the Jazz 2 communtity. I think this has been the best ever organised competition in the community because its easy to say your going to do stuff, but its hard to actually do it and its unbelievable to get it done on time ( especially on Xmas day :P ). I hope Wisey enjoyed his Xmas of judging tilesets ;)

Merry Xmas all! :D
