View Full Version : There's no J in OMF... or is there?

I imagine this has been posted at least three times, but I had a sudden compulsion to bring it up one last time, considering I just found it myself. I'm sure most people here have heard of One Must Fall 2097, made by who else but Epic. Which is why those Katanas appeared in Diamondus of the first of our bunny games.

Anyway, on with the... um... stuff...

If you complete a Destruction on Steffan in the North American Open tournament, you fight against none other than Jazz Jackrabbit (of course, under the alias "Jazzy"), piloting a Jaguar.

Complete a Destruction on Jaqouline in the Katushai Challenge tournament, and you are challenged to a duel with the nefarious Devan Shell's Flail.

Do a Destruction on Milano in the WAR Invitational tourney, and you fight opposite Jazz's lady love, and world princess, Eva Earlong, sporting a Shadow.

Then comes the World Championship, where you fight all three of the JJ troupe. First comes Eva Earlong, for the second time, but this time switched to a Gargoyle, if you pull off a Destruction on Prince Vassar. If Jazz sees you've done a Destruction on his beloved Eva, he'll come to avenge her anguished heart ("Melodramatic. ^_^"), and tank you instead with his Shredder. After he's defeated, you resume the normal tournament order of opponents... that is, until you reach Crystal. If you do a Destruction on her 'bot, the last member of the JJ games will appear in the tournaments. You get to fight, once again, opposite Devan Shell, but this time he's decided to use a Thorn for your monofilament-induced demise. And if you've made it this far, a turtle who's ten percent solid shell and ninety percent hot air shouldn't pose that much of a threat to you.

One last thing: I have seen screenshots of people playing as Jazz, instead of against him. I have yet to ascertain how the fargus they do that. >_>

Now I've got me wondering if they are going to (or have already decided to) do the same thing in One Must Fall: Battlegrounds. Hoyl, maybe they'll include Spaz this time. ^_^

Yeah. A lot of people already knew that.

Note the first line of my above post.

*points at you*

Besides, this is probably the most detailed anyone's cared to be about this topic.

Usually it depends on your rank in the tournament if a challenge comes, not on the pilot you destruct. For example, Jazz challenges you in the NA open after you went from rank 3 to 2, Eva comes at rank 15 or 14 in the World Championship.

Yes, most people already knew that.

I wouldn't know about the other OMF though, never played it.

Of course, the pilots are always in the same rank to start with when you begin the tournament. So, in the NorthAm case ("Jazzy"), you will always have to destruct Steffan, who is always in rank 2.

Generally, in a roundabout way, you're right, and I'm right. At the same time.

Innat weird? ^_^

The pilots should always be in the same rank the first time you play, yes. However, if you enter the same tournament again, they usually change positions. If they don't, that would seem a most freaky and scary coincidence.

You're quite right. I just took a look again and now Jean-Paul's in rank 2.

Great. Now I feel like a moron.

Again.

Well, according to the many OMF2097 faqs these (http://www.dutchfurs.com/~haze/?cat=articles&event=jjomf) rules should be followed. And as for the people playing AS Jazz, that's done by ripping the character out of the game and making a custom fighter out of him. At least, so I believe.

I bet there won't be any Jazz stuff in OMF Battlegrounds because:

1. Yes, the OMF2097 game was distributed by Epic (now it is a legal piece of freeware :D ), but it was programmed by Diversions (who owns the rights).

2. Diversions was making a 2D sequel to OMF, but they abandoned it for making a 3D one.

3. Diversions worked with Epic, they had access to the <holy> Unreal Engine </holy> which they modified for making it suitable for a non fps action game ;) , but Epic didn't care, so Diversions people quit from Epic, and started making the game under their <cough> new engine </cough>.

In other words, I don't believe you're gonna find Jazz in OMF because it isn't related to Epic in any way.

Epic is not a game company anymore, it is just a game engine company  :-)
