View Full Version : Pre-defined CTF Level Contest

Yet another contest. Why? Just because I'm a copycat and I like CTF levels a lot. I'm going to try this out and see what happens. This is like Stripe's contest (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4993), but with a few twists.

The differences:

1.) This contest requires your level to be 125x70. In JCS, the Blue base must be placed at 15,40 and the Red base at 111,40 (it doesn't matter which way they face). You can only use one full energy carrot (and no other carrots) at position 63,40. Everything else you can do whatever you want.
2.) Use triggers any way you want to. Team based routes, jails, etc...
3.) I won't be judging this. At least not exactly. The people themselves and a panel of judges will. I'll set aside a week for voting after the deadline.

Other things you might want to know:

Deadline: Friday, February 21, 2003 at 12:00 noon (GMT). All levels must be in by that date and no exceptions. You can email it, IM it, PM it, upload it to a website then give the link to me--any way you can get it to me. I have MSN (blurredd@hotmail.com), ICQ (129948993), AIM (blurredd), and IRC (I'm usually in #JJ2 or #JCStalk as either BlurredD or blur[semi-idle]). Your best bet is to email it to me at blurredd@hotmail.com since there's a good chance I won't be online.

Voting Week: From February 22 to February 28. Currently all entries will be voted on twice: by the people, and by our panel of judges. The panel of judges will not know the results of the poll voted on by the public and vice versa. When the contest entries are voted on, all authors will remain anonymous. The public will be able to download and vote on all entries in another thread on JCF. A few things you need to know: No one can betatest your level. No one can even see it. And I would appreciate it if no one says who made what level to anyone else just to keep this contest as fair as possible. Winners will be annouced on March 1.

Prizes: Assuming nothing goes horribly wrong and everything is fair, I will give out a prize: $10 for the winner of the popular vote and $15 for the winner of the vote by the panel of judges. Any contest entry can win both prizes. I'm also considering a prize for the most original CTF level. You'll find out how much that prize is after the contest is over.

Additional info:

If you want to make a level in TSF, go ahead, but it can't be voted on in the public poll since not everyone has TSF. However, a TSF level could still win some prize money if it is chosen by the judges and/or if it is the most original CTF level.

BTW, you get to do all your own money conversions. I can't really help it at the moment. You should be happy you're getting a prize. If you have any questions, post them in this thread.

And please be honest when you're voting. Thanks.

Sounds cool. Maybe I'll enter. Or maybe I won't. Hehehehe annonymousness.

NO ONE WILL KNOW IF I PARTICIPATE.

I'd like to add a few things.

The winner will probably be announced in #jcstalk at that time. If you don't have IRC, it will be posted here anyway. You can download mIRC at http://www.mirc.com/. It's free, though it will annoy you to register mIRC occasionally. Registering, which is for a fee, is optional, though.

Another thing to add: In the public contest, do not vote for yourself or have friends vote for you. Not only is this dishonest, but it is against the rules. Who votes for who will be checked. You might even be disqualified if you vote for yourself or otherwise cheat. The same with multiple accounts, even for those who are not running.

Just thought I'd throw that in.

I'll make a news post of this. Yay. News.

I believe (I'm not updated to the minute exactly due to my lack of an Internet connection) that any tileset is <strike>alive</strike> allowed.

EDIT: Typo.

Ah, yes: also, any level entered I'll use in my server rotation. I know that doesn't mean much now, but I will have a dedicated server once I get my new computer, which should be within a month or two. ;P

Few Questions:

1. What the heck I am doing with USD in Finland?!?
2. I can't vote because I am away for... a week, THOSE days :p

Stuff:

I will come in if you answer the first question :)

:)
:D YAY! Good I didn't join stripe's contest :D

I think i'll give this a shot. Participating in stripe's contest has taught me a lot about making CTF levels, so maybe i can learn even more in this one :)

Can it be TSF only?

the WINNER
Jan 24, 2003, 06:20 AM
Well, I have both versions and I am making it on 1.23...

I make it 1.23 becuz' BlurredD visited my server on 1.23.
I think that he accepts both versions, because tsf levels worked on my 1.23 JCS... and vice versa :)

I'm asking because I'm using a TSF only tileset. So don't blame me, blame the author. :p Actually don't blame the author... it's a good tileset after all. BLAME ME! *runs away*

I think the way of letting the other people vote won't be good.. People could just vote for the people who they like, and not for the levels themselves. And especially, people from the same clan, would probably just vote for eachother.

Let me just clear a few things up...

White Rabbit: This contest is primarily for 1.23 levels, but you can make a TSF level if you want. It can't be voted on by the public, but it can still win the other prizes.

the WINNER: I'll tell you what you can do with the USD issue.
A.) Use the prize money as a souvenir and hang it up in your bedroom.
B.) Ask me to buy you something equal to the amount of money you win (don't count on this).
C.) Find a way to somehow take my useless money and convert it into usable money, like in a bank or something.
D.) Or you could just forgot about getting my prize money and be satisfied with the knowledge that you won in a contest (I like this idea; it saves me some money).

About being away for week, there's nothing I can really do about it. The dates have already been set and I'm not going to change it just for one person. But if a lot of people have a problem with it, I'll consider an extension or something.

I should also mention don't password the levels since I might edit them a bit (nothing significant, like changing the name of the level). Filenames may be edited, too.

Ah, that's better then :)

But people could still tell others which level is theirs and many people have a recognizable way of making levels..

Trafton

CraccoBoy:

The poll results will be checked through a number of sources. In addition, it is against the rule to show anyone or even tell anyone about the level in a way that would allow them to know which one is your's. Anyone who cheats on voting will be disqualified from voting. Anyone who obviously cheats in voting who submitted a level will be disqualified from the contest, and possibly publically humiliated. This is reason enough not to cheat.

I *might* enter. It sounds so tempting. But im not entering for the money, how are you going to mail it to us? <s> I was hoping you'd make a level for the winner</s>

Radium
Jan 24, 2003, 01:45 PM
15 dollars? You can make that much picking coins out of a carseat. None the less, I may enter... just to prove I'm better than everyone else.

EDIT: I thought about it, and I'm in for money too. $15 dollars is enough to buy the Middle East!

Trafton, I don't see how you can publically huminiliate someone with this. It's not like anyone will care if someone else told one of his/her friends about a CTF level he/she's making. I'm not saying I'm going to join and cheat (I'm probably not joining this in the first place), I'm just pointing out some things which you gotta be careful with.

blurredd
Jan 24, 2003, 06:11 PM
Hey Radium, $15 dollars from a car seat? You must throw away a lot of change. And you must not have read everything in my 1st post because I also mention you can win $10 if the public chooses your level. A possible total of $25, not to mention a prize for the most original level.

And CraccoBoy, you didn't seem to read all of my post either. I did realize people can say who made what level, and I implied not to do this. If there's a lot of corruption in the poll, I won't give the $10 prize to the winner. The other prizes, however, will stay no matter what happens.

And about the prize money, I'll probably mail it or do whatever Stripe did or what not.
