View Full Version : Weekly Drawing Practice

Cobra
Feb 12, 2003, 01:06 PM
Alright, I've been talking to Gummi, and we're thinking that this forum (and artists ;p) could use some life.
We're thinking of starting a weekly draw-something. At the beginning of each week, a description/picture will be posted with instructions on what to do with it. The rest is open to interpretation and your artistic talent.

Would anyone be interested?

It's not a popularity contest -- so posts whining about your lack of art skills will be ignored :P It's just a chance to draw more, open your mind more, and practice.

--And.. *hugs cobbi* n_n suggestions of interpretations will be gladly accepted.

I.E: "Draw a female skunk in a prom dress"

Stuff like that.

Radium
Feb 12, 2003, 01:26 PM
Aye, I could go with that.

I think it should be a contest, thou.

GuMmYBeAr!
Feb 12, 2003, 01:32 PM
It's some sort of contest. ;P I dunno. ...Oh. Ack. Cobbi.. who will be the judges?

Radium
Feb 12, 2003, 01:46 PM
How about a poll?

Cobra
Feb 12, 2003, 01:48 PM
We would need unbiased judges.

And no one can win two times in a row.

GuMmYBeAr!
Feb 12, 2003, 02:33 PM
Oohh... Poll = good idea.

Radium
Feb 12, 2003, 02:38 PM
In the poll's selections you can put links to the images/the images themselvs (if it allows the img command).

I'll join, but I'm scared becuase I suck at mouse drawing (and my blasted mouse jumps to corners of the screen every now and then).

I belive most librarys have scanners you can use.

Que Passa!!!!

ME LIKE FUN GAME IDEA! ME PLAY!

(Actually, I dont have a reliable (edit)scanner, and I can't really spend too much time drawing on weekdays. That doesn't matter much, however, as I a) can work on weekends, and b) am pretty decent with drawing by mouse. In fact, most of the stuff I have in my side7 gallery are mouse drawings.)

Contest? That could be emotionally painful to some. Art contests aren't what I'd be aiming for, I can see some people just giving up art because they're "no good".

"It's just a chance to draw more, open your mind more, and practice."

That's the idea I would rather. There's no need for a contest. Don't bother with this contest stuff. People just want to improve.

Hey, if you want a contest, go ahead, I'm not stopping you. I just don't think it's the best idea if you want to get people to draw more.

(Actually, the way my art teacher at school is making the class draw more is by putting deadlines... Kinda harsh. But I have to do 6 drawings by tomorrow. I've done 4, I need 10...)

In reply to Nemisis: We could give a special award to the person that tried hardest but sucked anyway.:D

I have removed this comment becuase of <S>Cobbie</S> my conscience(sp?).

Sorry ;p, offended concept, offended people.

LOL,ingenius counter,Kaz!:D

Yeah,I'd be interested,muchly!^.^
Tho,I'm very busy drawing my own art and can't take part all the time...^_^;;

Hey,maybe we could make it a contest, but only those who say they definately want to be in it would be judged....now that's a deal, ain't it?:D

A normal poll will work fine, thanks to a wonderful thing called voting out of pity.

Duh,so how are we supposed to get any proper results that way?
So if we all vote out of pity, the one who worked hardest looses....YAAAAAY,VEEEEERY SENSIBLE!:p

Not <i>everyone</i> votes out of pity. =P

And about the contest, it's the nature of contests that somebody loses. If we didn't have losers, there would be no winners.

A poll is the most easy way to cheat.

Cobra
Feb 13, 2003, 12:01 PM
I can see who votes though.

Captain Spam
Feb 13, 2003, 12:32 PM
I dunno, I'd prolly take part in a few of these, but probably not as a contest. Just more or less a random drawing buzz thing for me.

Radium
Feb 13, 2003, 01:05 PM
We could have a poll over weather to make it a Contest or Pointless Activity!

Kaz
Feb 13, 2003, 05:31 PM
No contests, competition sucks and drives away some of the better artists. A way to get rid of bias though is to have them all posted up anomynmously with numbers to vote upon.

Competition still sucks =\.

This is a good idea. If I wasn't too lazy to use my scanner, I might actually have a few of my hand drawings up here on this forum already.

Contest? Nah. It takes away from the fun of simply looking in awe at the pictures. You have to decide which is best. Everybody has a different style of thier own. There is no way to judge a good drawing, they are different, not superior.

Tik
Feb 14, 2003, 05:04 AM
I won't participate since I can't draw, but if people decide to make it a contest of sorts, I'd be happy to be a judge if wanted.

Batty Buddy
Feb 14, 2003, 07:16 AM
Que Passa!!!!

Actually, I think that if we just don't offer a reward, this would be less of a compatition and more of a drawing practice (Besides, every artist can find improvement if they draw something compleatly random every once in a while. Just think of this as one of those cases where the random subject is publically given. Heck, I don't even plan on seeing who gets the most votes- it's just a fun way to get experience in this field, well, at least to ME it is...)

KRSplat
Feb 14, 2003, 01:06 PM
Contests push people to work harder, which always helps to improve.

Nemesis
Feb 14, 2003, 01:19 PM
Whenever you draw, you will improve. You don't need a contest to improve. One thing you can do is post up a picture of a clothed model or something and have people draw that. You can draw it furry, anime, cartoon, or even realistically, whatever. Similar to life drawing, just with clothes so nobody can call it "suggestive". It doesn't need to be some sort of contest, though. Just keep it as a random drawing thing.

Random drawing things are good for practice. You will improve by participating in them. But art shouldn't be a competition... It's more fun to show off your version of the subject and see how everyone else did it. It will prove how different everyones artistic thoughts, styles, and the way people do things, are...

That's what I said in my earlier post, Nemesis. It is also true that pressure can be pressuring, which is a bad thing.

Nemesis
Feb 14, 2003, 02:15 PM
Yes, I know, Splat. I was going to quote you, even.

Radium
Feb 15, 2003, 04:56 PM
Why don't we just start it, and if there isn't enough intrest we can make it a contest.

Nemesis
Feb 15, 2003, 05:30 PM
That sounds alright.

Wild Angel
Feb 15, 2003, 06:57 PM
Yeah, I say down with the contest. People will get hurt or angry. :P Don't say, 'No I won't.' Oh yes you will.

Sure, why not?

Soo... when does it start?

KRSplat
Feb 16, 2003, 03:49 PM
Probably never.

Hopefully soon.

What are we waiting for anyway? We could just start it now. There is no reason for it to be delayed, it's not like there is anybody we have to wait for to start. I doubt if Cobra or Gummi feel like they have to come up with the idea themselves. There is never going to be a complete agreement on what to do. I actually like Radium's idea. If nobody participates, it can be turned into a contest. This will have to be an experimental project, if we just keep arguing this will never start.

I can just see someone getting hurt emotionally over a contest.

Don't worry, I secretly like your pessimism. It makes you different from everyone here, and I think that is a good trait. ;-P

Topic please.

Hmm, Cobbie and Gummi should come up with the ideas and post (right now perhaps?) a topic of what to draw and set a deadline. Afterall, they're popular and therefore everybody would listen to them ;p.

I am nor a pessimist or an optimist. Is the glass half full or half empty? They are the same thing, stupid. Therefore there is no such thing as pessimism or optimism.

Radium
Feb 17, 2003, 05:10 PM
You're simply a mindless drone lacking personality. Pessimisim and Optimisim aren't a thing, they're your view on stuff. A optimist is glad that the glass is half full, and a pessimist is dissapointed that it is half empty.

KRSplat

we could do both you know,, once in a while, we could have a contest, and other times we would make it a fun all-around thing,,

this first coming one could be a FFA, and the next be a contest for example,,

in all of this though, i would be interested in doing this - contest or not,, really need to draw more than i currently do, so this will be my motivation,,

and quoting others before me, when does this start??
