View Full Version : A question I'm sure Link has heard too many times.

With Anniversary Bash 5 coming up, I said that I'd host a preliminary all-day or all-week (depending on how long my computer lasts with the freak weather southern Ontario has been having) server in honour of AB5. I hosted it, per usual, like I do my other servers, but no one joined up. About fifteen minutes ago I joined Violet's hotel server (hotel... *shudders*) and asked around. The general response was that I was pinging way too much. Now, considering I can usually host servers with few to no problems, this came as a shock to me. My router's been finely tweaked, I have a cable connection, and a 1.3 GHz computer running Win98.

However, there is a catch. I was running both JJ2 1.21 and 1.24 at the same time, plus KaZaA, MSWord, and Winamp. In retrospect, if I wanted to host a moderately dedicated server, I probably should not have wasted all my memory. In any case, other than freeing up memory, is there any way to knock off additional lag time in some way without changing my connection?

JJ2 1.2x
Win98
1.3 GHz Pentium 3
Cable
Linksys router (already forwarded)

Thanks for your help.

If you're playing over the internet with both versions at the same time, it will definitely cause lag as they use the same ports for communications. Only run one copy of JJ2 at a time, especially when playing on the internet.

The other programs shouldn't be a problem with a 1.3GHz computer, except for KaZaA which might lag you if there are too many uploads\downloads. Try setting a low cap on the number of each, or even try playing without it running.

I doubt if you can play online with two Jazz2s and not have immense lag.

(Are you sure you forwarded the ports? 10052-57. :P)

You only need 10052-10054

Not necessarily Link, on my dads comp, while I was playing jj2, it asked me to open port 10057. Im not sure if this goes for other computers.

That's what happened. Immense lag. So much, that my server wouldn't even de-ping itself.

Anyway, problem solved. It didn't have to do as much with both JJ2s being open at the same time as my having forwarded my router. I forgot that I had recently rearranged my family's connections to the router. The result was that I was actually forwarding the ports to my mother's computer. I changed the forwarding back to the way it should be, and the server runs smoothly again.

BTW, does anyone know what ports I need to forward to be able to play UT online?

I've found that KaZaA uploads can greatly lag a network internet connection. I'd suggest at least closing that program. Nothing else you mentioned should lag you that much.

KaZaA is an IMMENSE drain on memory, CPU power AND lag. Also, there is no way you can properly play two versions of JJ2 MP at the same time, the lag is horrendous.
