Timing out after 30 seconds. A common issue, I'm sure.

I have a firewall but I don't know how to disable it or how to open the 10052 and 10054 on TCP and UDP Inbound and Outbound... whatever that is.

I'm not too bright with all this firewall-ish stuff. Can anyone help me out? =^.^=

Uhh.. can't really help you out with what information you gave us. If you can, tell us what firewall you have.. or even better, find the manual and read it :)

It will usually depend whether it is a gateway (router) or a software firewall (like ZoneAlarm).

But unfortunately, many firewalls are not as feature-rich as they should be (specifically: properly forwarding\allowing UDP).

You'll want to find a way to forward certain ports or give your program full access. With routers this usually involves going to a certain address in your browser, and with software firewalls it involves changing the program settings.

The best way to find out how to do this is to read your firewall documentation. Look for keywords "forwarding" or "port triggering" in the case of routers.

I remember fixing this problem. I just don't remember how. If you have a firewall or router, you should open ports 10052 through 10057. (Just for future reference.) If you don't open those ports (IP Forwarding is what it is called on my router) nobody will be able to join your server. I do not remember how to fix the timing out problem. Is your internet connection shared?

What operating system?

If it is cable or dsl, does your computer connect directly to the modem? If not, what is your network setup?

When I had the problem, I was on dial-up... but, the connection was shared by a few computers through a computer used only for that purpose.

I'm on a wireless internet connection with my dad's computer, pretty sure it's Cable. I'm running Windows XP (if that's what you meant.. <.<; ), and no firewall that we know of.

Ok. Do you know if it uses a wireless access point (like a separate router), or is it just a connection between two computers.

If the latter, you will likely need to configure ports and things on the internet connection sharing setup on your dad's computer. If the former, there will be a web page configuration tool, available through an address like http://192.168.0.1, http://192.168.1.1, or http://192.168.2.1 (try all of those).

If you are unsure, ask your dad.

Try http://192.168.1.0 - http://192.168.1.(however many computers you have plus one). The password should be admin. There is no name.

That's the adapter that connects to your computer (I actually use that exact one). But there should be an access point somewhere. Where is your cable modem? Is there another thing that looks like that connected to the modem? Or does the modem connect directly to one of the computers?

On the computer, go to the start menu and click run, then type cmd and press enter. After you're in the command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter. What is the IP address displayed? What about the gateway? Is there more than one network adapter listed? (if so, what are the IP and gateway for all of them?)

If the IP of a gateway is shown, that is probably your router's address. Try going to that in your web browser.
