Que Passa!!!!

Ok... This is something the Dig Dug fan in me has been screaming that I do. It has a weird story to it too:

If you've ever been in a gamestore in the past year or so, you've no doubt at least heard of Mr. Driller. Well, it turns out that in Japan there is a PS2 game called Mr. Driller Great WHICH HAS DIG DUG IN IT!!! AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER!!! AND HE'S MR. DRILLERS FATHER!!! AND HE'S GOT A REALLY COOL BEARD-THINGY ON HIS CHIN!!!

Anyway, I did reseach on this, and found this picture confurming it:

http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=1183364&article_id=98272&channel_id=60&page_title=First+Details%3A+Mr.+Driller+Great&adString=network%3Dign%26site%3Dpsx%26pagetype%3Dm ediaimgthin&return_url=http%3A%2F%2Fpsx.ign.com%2Farticles%2F0 98%2F098272p1.html

I almost had to have my eyes surgically returned to my head, and desided to draw a picture of this(As it was something I had previously imagined coming true.)

So, I came up with this cute little doodle, proving two things: 1) I suck at drawing Mr. Driller, and 2) I'm a big enough Dig Dug fan to not let #1 bother me.

Bonus: For extra laughs, imagine that Dig Dug sounds like Spike from Tom and Jerry.

"Heh, heh, heh... Dats ma BOY doin dat..."

Heh... hilarious. Honestly didn't see the connection between Mr. Driller and Dig Dug at first. And that's not bad a drawing of Mr. Driller, really.

I did a bit of searching, and I can find <a href="http://www.upstategames.com/gba_game_driller2.phtml">Mr. Driller 2</a> for the GBA if I go import. Seems to be Mr. Driller Great (At least, Dig Dug's on the cover). Just out of curiosity, know ye where I can snag the original Mr. Driller for both the GBA and Dreamcast (I KNOW it was released on the Dreamcast)?

Nice. I've never played Dig Dug, and only played a bit of Mr. Driller, but that's some good art.

Que Passa!!!!

I THINK I've seen Mr. Driller 1 for GBA once... and I DO mean ONCE- I never saw it again. Been looking for it myself. Eventually, I just gave up and bought it for GBC so I could improve my game at arcades and impress strangers I'll probably never see again.

I've played Mr. Driller 2 on emulator... Might get it on import. I won't understand a word of it, but who cares- the rules are simple and the story is not all that important for the gameplay.

And as for Dreamcast, I haven't seen a Dreamcast game for sale since Sega pulled the plug on that and went third party.

Finally, that other character with Mr. Driller in Mr. Driller 2 is sadly not Dig Dug. It's a girl named Anna Hottemaya who is Mr. Drillers rival or something... I think she's Russian or something...

(Edit: ) and since Iam Canadian hasn't played Dig Dug, I'll just say that it's one of my favorite games, involves a miner digging around killing cute little monsters with a bicycle pump, and has had a few sequals that most fans say never did it justice (Although I came up with an idea for something similar to Pac Man World called Dig Dug Subterrany... I might show some pics of some of my ideas with that bit of fangamedom.)

Interesting. The fact that you are a dig dug fan doesn't surprise me at all. It really fits you. I really liked dig dug back when, but when I played Dig Dug 2 I was really dissapointed. Cool info, and pic, thanks for sharing :).

I think Bubble Bobble would probably be another one you like, right?

By the way, perhaps you should hold back on the cheeks when drawing humans? It kind of looks like Dig Dug has a muzzle, or something.

...Hmm who is the Mother? *a dragon enemy in an apron steps into the picture, "Boys, dinner is done!"* ...I didn't need to see that.

1) Dig Dug was the first game I ever played and as a result, I have a deeper respect for it than any other. Even Pac Man is only second best compaired to Dig Dug. It is the true definition of the word "One hit wonder"... And for me, the one game I REALLY HATED was Infogrames "Dig Dug Deeper", in which they gave the once cute little kid in a spacesuit a "Buzz Lightyear Superchin" and crammed his game with 500 cc's of pure consentrated stupid.

2)Bubble Bobble is cool too(I think that was one of the first games I ever owned.). I loved Bub best, and I still have the themesong running through my head for almost 15 years. I really don't know why, but super cute games just seem to appeal to me better then super realistic games. I figure if I want reality, they give THAT away for FREE.

3) I'll see what I can do about the cheeks. Normally, the most common type of head I draw I have dubbed "Squashed Pumpkin shaped" and I use it for practically everything that doesn't need a large muzzle(Like, say, a fox) and has a neck (Unlike, say, a sloth), but its kind of a flexable shape so I might only need more exparamenting.

4) Well, I DID draw ONE picture of Dig Dug wooing a cute girl in a minor's outfit once(Looked kind of like Dig Dug's only different colors and a + rather then a double V on the shirt... She had no name, but who knows- maybe I'll bring her back.), it was a comic(I actually had quite a few Dig Dug comic ideas): he offers her a flower(Like one of the ones that pop up when you beat a level) but then a Pooka rushes up and eats it... He ends up chasing the little guy, resulting in Key-stone kops/Benny Hill kind of madness before the Pooka ends up actually escaping wearing Dig Dug's minors helmet(and, lets just say that helmet hair hasn't been kind to our friend.). But I like YOUR sick and twisted idea better...

Dig Dug: NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Batty: heh heh heh *Goes off to draw Dig Dug's NEW girlfreind from heck*

Ooo... Benny Hill-style action. If I can play "Yakkity Sax" alongside it and it makes sense, that'll be good enough for me. :-) Got any scans of those, Batty?

Que Passa!!!!

Actually, no, but mentioning it made me nostalgic, so I started redrawing the comic.(THAT is why I'm thankful for the internet, anything that I do that doesn't get put on it gets torn up in the pit that is my room...)
Female Dig Dug(We'll call her that for now) still doesn't have a name, but then, Dig Dug doesn't talk in the comic, so that's not going to be a problem...

In fact, come to think of it, the ONLY diologue in the strip is the sound of the pooka chewing.

...Hmmm... dragon mother... hehe, he inflated that enemy in the wrong way.

Hehe, yeah, the whole concept is just plain wrong.

I'm still redrawing the comic and trying to rember how it looked, but until I do, here's the female Dig Dug(Went easy on the cheek this time.), and... Hare's little blind date idea.

Hehe, the concept is even more wrong with the visual. :P

A kind of Futurama style of twisted humor :).

The dragon is nice too. :) hehe, joking. I mean the dig dug lady is nice too. :)

I wonder if the dig dug lady bakes too? Does she use lots of yeast? :) *inflate* *inflate* *inflate*

A Fygar with a blonde wig. Brilliant. :-)

Cute Mrs. Dig Dug, there. Gotta love ponytails, I say. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but did you base her appearance (blueish cyan skin, etc) off of the Player 2 look in Dig Dug, or am I thinking of something else? (Did player 2 even look different?)

Batty Buddy
May 26, 2003, 02:08 PM
Que Passa!!!!

I'm not sure about player 2 looking different. Dig Dug himself has that skin tone in the first game(Every game after that, however, has him with a caucasian skin tone... Except for Dig Dug Arrangement which is basically the first game with more varied monsters and powerups.) I think I came up with her apearance just kind of randomly.
And as for the ponytail- lets just say I like drawing ponytails and be done with that. /\:lol:/\

Dig Dug's angry face reminds me of Calvin's from Calvin and Hobbes. :) Nice.

Excellent crazy humor, as always. Good timing.
