View Full Version : Bouncers, bubbles, and wallclimbing.

It is argued whether bouncers and bubbles going through walls is a bug or not. I also bring up the fact that wallclimbing may not be a bug. My reason for this is that in the OEM version 1.00g, you could NOT wallclimb, and bouncers and bubbles did NOT go through walls. There were no seeker holes, either, but I doubt that is intentional (to have seeker holes). Post your oppinions. If you start a flame war, I will get blamed. So, don't.

They are bugs. Many bugs actually become features in some sequels or updates for some games, though. Examples would be Diablo 2 and... um.

The question is, why would they be intentional? Bugs.

I wonder what one could start flamewar about in such a topic.. hm...
<s>RAD, YOU SUCK!!!111OMG HAHAH I FUNI ;===PPPP</s> I think they weren't intentional. I mean, wallclimbing is hard enough to manage, why should they just put it into the game for the heck of it.. besides, it would be cheating in most levels and/or lock you into some place. I wonder what it's supposed to be good for anyways. =P
About the rest, also bugs. Even the characters get stuck. So why not the weapons. And I doubt they intended the mask-bugs that make critiques call the game "buggier than a jar of ants" or something.

I'm quite sure the wallclimbing thing is a bug. However, I don't know about the bouncers. So I voted on option 2.

UR has a point. I think that when they made the weapons shoot faster when you were running, it caused a glitch. Maybe for wallclimbing. they took away the character's mask while stomping because he got shot too easily.

I'm fairly positive that wallclimbing is a bug. I'd say the same for bouncers, since i don't see the point of adding a weapon which had only the purpose of shooting through walls (electroblaster) if the bouncers were meant to be able to do that already.

I know that wall climbing is a bug, and bouncers going through walls are bugs, but I think that the bubbles may be intentional, or at least a featurable accident.
Say, how do you do strike out text?

Of course, why didn't I even TRY that? I guess I forgot that real HTML is allowed here.

I think the bouncers were intentional...Think about it:
If an object is below, you can't really hit it with the Eblaster. That's where the bouncers come in.
WC is a bug, because when you stop your mask goes away, making you invulnerable. however, when you double jump while buttstomping, you move up, and when your mask comes back, you are in the mask above and Volia! You are in the wall.

I think they're both a result of improvement of the collision detection code and the better weapon fysics fix
the turtleshell trick is another example of the messed up collision detection

When a turtle shell gets trapped inside a masked tile it rises to the top

They're both unintentional, in both occasions the object defies the laws of physics (going through walls? oh please) as, ironically, a result of the game engive trying to resemble a true physics model.
Sometimes though, unintentional bugs can be implemented into gameplay in future releases thanks to the community adapting to it. I think a classic example of this is the rocket jump (if you dont know what this is then you don't deserve to call yourself a nerd, SHAME ON YOU!). I doubt that in doom or quake (not sure where it started) the developers had this great idea to make rockets blow yourself up into the sky, some gamer prolly figured it out until later it got implemented into later games.
Hmmmm, speaking of weapon jumps, you guys ever seen half-life (yes the original game not counterstrike or anything) duels? WHOA! Talk about overkill! The things that plasma charger thingy can do!
So yeah, both are unintentional, and theyre still around thanks to JJ2 not getting patched. I wonder if the 1.25 patch actually fixed up those issues or not, makes me kinda nosey.

Umm.. haven't quite gotten there yet ;P If you're talking about whether we might 'fix' those, I'm not sure what would be best. It's more important to keep the gameplay enjoyable than to make it completely realistic.

The bouncers and water shiled through wall thing seems too useful to be a bug. It may seem glitchy to some people, but to me it just seems as a strategic advantage they gave to those weapons. It does not make gun9 obsolete because bouncers can only go through thin walls, espeically the unpowered ones.

I thought that that was put in so that turtle shells DIDN'T get stuck.

AFAIK it was pretty much done but when the mac version of it had to be made it just never finished. Thats the patch I was talking about, I wonder if it those bugs were on their to-do list.

In Marathon an FPS made around the same time as DOOM you could grenade and rocket jump. You could get up huge platforms using this teqnique.
