Hm... the idea about the smilies with the robotty enemy sorta thing reminds me of a (seemingly dead) webcomic, <a href="http://woot.keenspace.com">City of ASCII</a>, where the heads of all the characters were simply the appropriate smilies, oriented to which direction they were facing. Default was happy.

So, that character sounds interesting, at any rate. :-)
