HDD Problems? Or Overall problems? :(

Well... here is how it goes.
I have a fairly moderate comp, stats:

CPU: AMD Duron 1300MhZ
Memory: 128 RAM MB
HDD: 2 HDDs, 1st 40GB, 2nd 20GB
Gfx Card: Hercules GeForce3 Ti 200

Gah, well, i don't think anything else is needed here.

What basically happened was my windows XP kept crashing after i reformatted etc and installed it on my 40GB hard drive.

Eventually, it was in-accessible, gave the BSOD, ever looping, so I reinstalled it, and it gave the eventual problem again.

So therefore I installed Windows 98 on the 40GB, but now that's giving me stress :(

After I've used my comp, and switched it off, the next morning, it gives me Disk Read Errors in DOS when it's loading up, and then it often gives loads of missing file errors etc, and not enough memory, and shuts down the comp.

However, somehow, after I ran scandisc, it found nothing, but still was able to run into Windows 98.

I doubt my comp is too cold and it needs warming up? :(

I have now currently:

1st HDD -> split into 2 x 20GBs, drives C: + D:
2nd HDD -> 20GB, drives E:

I have windows 98SE installed on C:, windows xp installed on E:, and a transfer hard drive for D:, using Partition Magic + BootMagic.

[Also, a small problem is, that I can't access XP right now either ;) Err, after i click it in bootmagic it gives "Remove all disk from medias and press any key to restart". I haven't got any discs in floppy drive, and after you press any key to restart, it either goes back to bootmagic, or partition magic -.-]

The second problem isn't that major, but the first is.

Sometimes, I get CRC Error 45, when scanning my Windows 98 from Windows XP using Partition Magic after it breaks down... :|

Bad Sectors always appear, but I'm using 98 right now so !?! :|

Trafton says it might be my new 40GB hard drive is corrupted? :|

I think that Trafton was correct - the 40GB drive is probably corrupt. If it gave problems before and after formatting, and with two different operating systems, I can't think of what else it could be.

The XP problem with the hard disk seems to be different, and was affected slower than the 98 i have installed now.

Great, Scandisc decides to delete C:\Windows\Command.

There goes another folder, another day.

Anyway, I'm thinking about reversing the master + slave positions, so my 20GB, which has XP installed on it, fully working, to master, and this %£)%("ed up 98 with er all my backup files on it, to hell :P, rather a slave driver.

Tell me what you think bout this, cos i'll be doing this now.. i think :\

Also, should i degrade my XP to 98 on my second hard drive? :| It'd take longer, but IMHO, XP's more stable, but slower?

And furthermore ;) how the hell does the windows I have installed on the 1st HDD, no matter how partitioned, always crashes by deleting stuff inside the Windows folder? Maybe it doesn't like primary partitions? :|

I'm sorry, but I do not quite understand what you mean by that. If you mean the hard drive corruption is reaching it more slowly, that is more or less natural; certain physical parts of the hard drive are affected more quickly than others.

ScanDisk won't do that unless you confirm it to. If there was corruption in that folder, it is not as if you could do much to save it anyway.

I am not sure what you mean by that either, but it is probably a good idea. Still, no matter whether it is slave or master, the second hard drive will still be corrupt. I would recommend imaging the corrupting hard drive, but it may be too late for that - the file linking system could be so far "down the road" that it might copy corrupted contents, too.

XP takes a better computer. I would, however, advise you that under XP, a 20GB hard drive will fill up fairly quickly.

You mean ScanDisk is deleting it? That means that those files reside on a part of the hard drive that is corrupted. They are pretty much dead in the water, anyway.

Good luck with the hard drive switching. I really would recommend considering a new, bigger hard drive - say around 60GB or so - if you are going to run XP.
