View Full Version : Jazz VS Sonic: refreshing

I have played Sonic Battle lately, and it has inspired me for some new cool ideas. The most important thing is that I decided to do the sprites from the start once again (there wasn't much of them anyway), but smaller and better shaded. This way is much easier and looks a lot better! See the first animation here: http://www.jsz-clan.republika.pl/SonicJVSstand.gif I hope it looks good. Now I can seriously move forward. Before that, I hated making new animations, and it's better when you like what you do. The size of the sprites has allowed to enlarge the arena from the sight of characters. So now you can juggle your enemies even higher and blast'em through a larger distance! What d'ya think?

To be completley honest I think that sprite totally sucks, try using rips from an official game instead.

What Faw said. Great improvement.

Better, but Sonic does not have a snout. If you want to make him look decent, look a bit at this, (http://netraptor.org/how2draw/) and see if it helps some.

Ditto on the snout. He's also a little lanky looking for Sonic. However, you really did a great job animating the spines. Thumbs up on that bit.

Maybe you could have the two arms move differently instead of in perfect unison? It would look a bit more natural if the arm and fist closest to the viewer moved a bit more than the arm and fist on Sonic's opposite side. He looks a bit bow-legged too, but I don't have any suggestions on how to fix that right now.

his legs needed one more frame inbetween.

The way the sprite moves is ok.

He is using original graphics which is good to see! I think ripped graphics totally suck.

Anyway good job! Looks pretty good although a bit off model.

Reasons why using original sprites is bad:
1. Unoriginal
2. Move limits
3. Different size (tiles in JJ2 are 32x32, tiles in SGBA1&2 are 22x22)
4. Not much characters (only those who appear in Jazz2 or GBA Sonic games)

And here's another one I made, standing Jazz (I used my second server since the other one can't open right now):

Trim down jazz's hair a bit and that'll do pretty good.

To be completley honest I think that sprite totally sucks, try using rips from an official game instead. You probably never saw any of the older screenshots with sprites. This is a -huge- improvement. Great new work, JSZ Jazz. I look forward to the game more now.

Ripping from an official game is only a good idea if you want perfect quality. I think fangames are ruined if stuff is ripped. The self-drawn aspects are more respectable, will fit in with the rest of the art better (assuming that is also drawn), and will widen the experience and talent for the person making the game. Ripping is just...cheap.

Lastly, I agree that Jazz's hair is kinda...big. Maybe flatten it down and I think it will look good. I like the personal flairs though. Good work!

Thanks for feedback everyone!
Currently I'm trying to draw Sonic's run animation. It would be probably done by now if I was lazy, since I wanted it to have 6 frames and all are made, but that way it looks lame. Now I decided to make 8 frames, there's one more to go. I hope that it will look smoothly, but I do believe that 10 will be an optimal number. Oh well, no work is easy. ;)
Yeah, Jazz's hair is a bit big. It's hard to make them quite small and natural at once, I tried, but they looked like goo. Anyway, I'll try a bit more and we'll see.
I posted this thread on another forums, the GameTalk. They're dedicated to Sonic, and people out there are all sure, that I should use ripped sprites or else the graphics will suck. Well, I'm not going to do so. There is no chance that I will go for ripping, because that way I can't actually make the game as I want it to be (especially with the Jazz characters). So no matter how much people out there hate it - I'm doing all the sprites myself. I also enjoy it - I can't wait to make sprites of Shadow or Mastah Yoghurt from Devil Dash.

Next animation is here. I finished it long before, but I didn't have time to upload it on server. See it by clicking this link:

As you can see, it's Sonic's walking animation. It consists of 8 frames. I think I have to fix Sonic's legs in the stand animation, since when he'll start walking, he'll look like he's moving back and forth while starting and stopping.

Those sprites look awesome. Jazz looks sort of like Haze!

One minor note: For me, the walking Sonic sprite has a graphics bug in one of the frames, where the shoes kind of dissipate across the bottom of the frame, making it rather ugly. I'm not sure if this is just me or something else.

I took a look at the frames once more. It looks like in frame #5, shoes are in the same place. Fortunately, one is positioned different from the other. I'll think more about it. As for now, here's the fixed Sonic standing animation:

I have fixed Jazz's stand animation. There was a bug in the headband and the hair are now moving more smooth. I haven't trimmed them down, because then they looked like goo.

Hmmm. Adding some shading or texture to the light green bit in the middle would help a lot. It just looks ugly now.

Maybe just tone the light green down a bit. It seems to have a much higher contrast than the other colors. Try bumping up the red and blue a bit (and maybe lowering the green slightly) and you should be fine.

Very nice.

His hair swings wrong. When he moves back, it goes back with him, and when he moves forward it goes forward before him. Apart from that and the light green, very nice job.

It's not a mistake, it's a braking effect.

I've got a question: What program will you use for this game? There's a great fighting game engine, calld M.U.G.E.N. If you interested in it, I'll give you the a link...
The sprites are not bad... But some of them needs to fix. The outlines of jazz's fur of his stomach must be darker, and the upper part of his head shorter. Sonic's nose part (the pink nose part) must be shorter too, I think.
Good luck for this game! :-)

I'm using The Games Factory, but maybe it's a good idea to try MUGEN. I once tried to find it, but I only found the Dragon Ball Mugen game. Send a PM with the link, please.

BTW, I've just noticed that I haven't done anything for JVS in last 2 weeks... Gotta go for it again.

I think, not his head, but his head! ;-)
JSZ Jazz: I'm lazy to write a private message to you, sorry, but here's the link: www.freewebs.com/my_mugen_project
It's not my page, but you can find here what you want. Check out the downloads, and here's MUGEN (it's not 3d fighting game maker as the sign says it's 2d fighting maker. =D) And for using good mugen, you might need the XP patch, and the Mugen Character Maker. If my memory is good, you can find them here... Good luck! :)

Sorry, I wanna mean: Not his head, but his hair is the too big. =)
And his head need to be wider (the lower part of it, under the nose, where he's furry.) Ok, ok Good luck again! =D

To tell the truth, my characters are a bit out of proportions, because now it has been not more than two weeks since I discovered a sketchline way of drawing Jazz characters (you know, drawing some circles and lines, and then put a character on them). Thank goodness sprites are small enough to make this unimportant.

Finally, I have made a new animation! It's not that it took me a lot of work, it's just that I was busy doing other stuff... The animation itself took no more than 20 minutes. Here it is. Blocks aren't fascinating, but I think that hands look more like Sonic's. Now I can start making Jazz's and Sonic's ducking animations...

TaZaR
Apr 3, 2004, 03:47 PM
Hmm... It has only 3 frames, but not bad. I think his nose (the skin colored part) still might be shorter. And why don't you try to shade your sprite? Thy might look much better, I think...

DoubleGJ
Apr 4, 2004, 03:53 AM
First, it has not 3, but 2 frames. Second, it is shaded - use the third mouse button zoom or something else to zoom and see that it's shaded...

TaZaR
Apr 4, 2004, 04:34 PM
Ok, it's shaded, but not wery well, sorry. Not bad, at all, but use a little more colors for shade, and make shades for his all parts. (stomach, etc...) Beleive me, Sonic would be look much better, and it's not a too long & hard work...

TaZaR
Apr 17, 2004, 08:38 PM
Ok, I had made a little fix on your sonic in 30 minutes. I hope you will like it. :) I wanna show you, what am I talking about (stomach part, nose, face, head, spikes, shades, etc.), an I hope it will help you in the future to make better sprites. Just don't give up! (Tip: After you ready with the outlines, use zoom, and fix the little parts by hand again...)

It looks good... However the head now seems bit too small. I'll _try_ to modify Sonic to something inbetween those two... Gah, more work coming...

TaZaR
Apr 18, 2004, 03:41 PM
Yes, very much work, but if you made them nice, you're fan game will be much fans, because the Sonic and the Jazz fans will like it too (and the fighting game fans =) ). And another tip: I can't changed his hands really, but they need to be shorter.
Good luck, again!
