View Full Version : Which resolution do you use in JJ2?

Which resolution do you use JJ2 and why? I use 400x300 because I'm used to JJ1 and I don't want to have such a little Jazz (or Spaz, Lori) like with 640x480. With 400x300 Jazz is in JJ2 as tall as in JJ1 (approximately) on my 19" monitor.

If 640x480 is supported, why not?
If you run in maximized window (not full screen) in 16-bit it is slowed down. If 8-bit in max. window it actually runs better than in 16-bit fullscreen.

Why not is a good question. I have different reason than Karmus, though. 640x480 let's you see the most area around you, which is useful when you actually want to play to win. The other settings may help raise the frames per second, but I don't think it's worth it. Plus, they often make it harder to chat and to see what others are saying.

640x480 . Windowed mode is the best because it allows you to do other things while you play. I only go on fullscreen when I play 2 players because its bigger in fullscreen

640x480 direct draw, except when I am trying to play and surf the net/upload stuff at the same time.

Highest, which is still horrible on 19" :P

That actually depends on what I'm doing. No matter what I'm doing, unless I'm only testing a level that I'm building, I play in full-screen mode.

If I'm playing single player (which for me is most of the time), I have the resolution on 512x384. This lets me see enough of the level at one time that I can see as far as I can shoot. I've never had problems with not being able to see far enough in single player on this setting. The added benefit is that because the scenery and the sprites are larger in proportion to the screen, they move fadter across it. Playing at a slightly lower resolution than the maximum width actually increses the sensation of speed when you run! I'm talking actual speed relative to the player's range of vision, not a boost in performance. That makes the experience more intense for me, and more like the original Jazz Jackrabbit.

If I am playing multiplayer, no matter whether it is split-screen local cooperative play or just me on my computer going online against opponents, I play at 640x480 like just about everyone else, because I need as much as possible to be crammed onto the screen in either case.

I really do recommend trying 512x384 for single player play. You'd be might be surprised at the extra rush of speed you can get

'cactly X. Just quick posting.
But any resolution is annoying when playing QoB! :D
I wish there was a map function in Jazz2 and GTA like in Duke3D.

Methinks this is a bias. :P

I play 640x480x8, though a 800x600x8 would be nice.

And Red_Wraith, Jazz1's resoultion is 300x200. And I know that. So there.

Is this supposed to be an argument or something? I know that Jazz's resolution is like this. Where is the problem? Do you think it's not possible that in Jazz2 Jazz is as big as Jazz in Jazz1 because the resolution is different? Theoretically Jazz in Jazz2 could also have been designed 20 cm tall with 400x300.

But JJ2 is a platform game it wouldn't work out. I've seen you do better spelling Karmus. Heres some corrections:

Because then you can see whats coming around the next corner.

That was one of my gripes about JJ2... always 640x480. I mean, if the resolution could go higher, then in 4 player mode, each player can have their very own 640x480 screen section, but nooooooo. They've got to have a 320x240 screen section that lets you see almost nothing. And what is it with game engines and not scaling sprites in resolution changes? I get a high resolution set up, then I can't see the text because its microscopic all the sudden. And why can't the joystick work while someone is typing in JJ2? Etc. Etc. Etc.

Oh, and I use 640x480x16 direct draw. Settings maxed out... but hardware mode is turned off because it disables ambient lighting for some reason. o.O... and I don't know why.

I'm a multi tasker, so I need it in windowed mode, unless I'm working on a tileset or level and I want to see my work in lower res... Or if Ijust want to take in all the pixel goodness of the classic.

Because talking disables movement.

but hardware mode is turned off because it disables ambient lighting for some reason. o.O... and I don't know why.
That's what hardware acceleration is for. Removing some of the special effects which really lower game speed - lighting and transparency

:P I play alot on my laptop. It's not realy fun cause on laptops, there's always that huge black border and it sux like that. I use 640 x 480 in windowed mode and sometimes fullscreen mode. I btw, lower resolution, more pixely

I always play at 640x480x16 with lighting mode on. I finally got a PC that can't drop below 70 fps while in JJ2, even online, and I like to show it off ;p

Is there anyone who can provide that patch? I'd really like to have it for split screen mode.
