Point 2 it is.
I'm not intending to stay behind on things, but neither do I blindly adopt any new JJ2+ feature as if it were my favorite bottle of beer. 
It's not that I always play 640x480 nowadays. In fact, not too long ago I played through most of Devres in 800x600 for the sake of it, until some cutscenes and 'fake gravity' parts were visually broken really bad.
