ProjectJ

I'm kinda uncomfortable to reveal this at this point, because I got literally nothing (except some generic 3d platformer code for Unity), but I need help regarding models, because I can only do basic, non-animated stuff.

What is ProjectJ?

ProjectJ is community-powered, non-commercial Jazz Jackrabbit fangame in full 3D. It will retain level structure of original (DOS) Jazz Jackrabbit game (2 "acts" and boss fight), but it won't be a remake.

What ProjectJ ISN'T?

ProjectJ isn't based on unreleased jazz3 in any way, except it being 3D. It isn't remake of any previous games as mentioned above. I won't even use Unreal for that, just Unity.

What I need:
- Models for Jazz (don't know if Spaz or Lori will be in game at this point) and several basic enemies (turtles, bees) in order to make tech demo to see if people there will like it. They should be made so Unity will have no problem with those, at best using "legacy" animation system as Mecanim largely sucks. Blender models are preferred here as I don't have any paid 3D package such as MAX or Maya.
- Models for using as props. Tech demo level will be based on Diamondus so I'd like to concentrate efforts on stuff that are usually there.

What I can do on my own:
- Coding. As I said previously, I can largely do it on my own, either my own code or code from Asset Store. though additional programmer would be nice esp. for camera stuff - I couldn't program camera for third person game if my life would depend on it.

- 2D textures, this will be easy, esp. since I'm aiming for cartoonish style of first game rather than some hyper-realistic one.

- Simple, non-animated models e.g. for pickups (carrots, weapon pickups).

- Levels. Even though final release will contain level editor (I plan on using marching-cubes based voxel engine so editing levels will be super easy), most of stuff in base campaign (I plan after doing level editor start working on campaign editor so people could make their own custom episodes) will be done by me.

I sympathise with you, but if you're at this early a stage, I doubt you'll be able to find much help here.

My advice: Learn to use Blender. It should only take you a day or two.

Oh, I can use Blender just fine. It's just... that my models are usually schaiße, if you know what I mean.

//edit: This isn't "make game for me" thread. I can do most of the things fine, including code, sound (music will be probably either rips from original Jazz or some fan remixes), levels and 2D art.

In fact, I've just did basic (ground) textures for Diamondus and I am in the process of making episode hub (it will be similar to e.g. level hub in some Crash Bandicoot games).

Ah, okay, fair enough.

Still, I doubt you'll find much help here, although I wish you the best of luck.

Yeah, there hasn't been much in the way of 3D stuff around here, so as far as I know nobody has much experience with it. It sounds like it could be an interesting project, but don't underestimate the amount of work this is going to take.

I'd suggest using the JJ3 models as placeholders so you can at least get a working prototype going. Then you might be able to find some an online modeling community (with no specific relation to Jazz) to help you out from there.

Well, I vividly remember that guy behind JJ3 patch has made upgraded models. Do you know if he is still around? I mean I know patch project is dead, but maybe he could help me on that one.

As being said, I just need help with models. I probably could model Jazz myself, but then I'd insult every Jazz Jackrabbit fan out there by this model, which is not something I want to do.

Hoodoo, that might've work but it would also raise PJ's profile too much. I don't want Epic know about this until it's too late - so when they finally get around to send C&D, game would already be highly circulated. I am 90% sure C&D letters don't work in Poland, but don't want to risk it in case they do.

The most important part is getting to a prototype stage, with a lot of placeholders, because this is not the first recarnation of a Jazz game... so nobody want to spend time in a lost cost.

Maybe not first "recarnation" but first in 3D. As for placeholders, I need Jazz model, otherwise it won't feel like Jazz game at all, just yet another 3D platformer.

A good compromise might be to use a sprite with a collision box as a placeholder.
