How old is an average JJ2 player?

I've been thinking about it for a while really... Since this game is already 18 years old, I don't really think that people who are now 10 or younger play this game, though we don't have the ability to see SP players...

So, with JJ2 getting older, plenty of the community members are in their twenties, and AFAIK some of them are in their thirties.
And with modern games with preety 3D graphics and 60fps gameplay, there aren't many teenage players, IMO.

Now that I wrote some pointless stuff above so the thread has an introduction, just tell what you think: How old is an average JJ2 player?

But...JJ2 is 60fps?

Good gameplay always beats good graphics for me. Also perhaps that traditional FPSes/racing sims/sports games/top down navigators (hard to explain) don't seem to be my cup of tea, which are the majority of modern 3D games. Also that my PC probably sucks at running them too but it's been a while since I last checked.

If the majority of players aren't 21 to 25, then it's 26 to 30.

JJ2 is 60fps (though it microstutters at 60hz), it can give at max 144fps as far as I can see. Playing at 74hz reduces the stutters to s great extent and feels lotta smooth.

And I think JJ2 is still graphically impressive. I mean look at this game. Its nicely detailed. And you can't compare it with 1st person/ 3rd person/ sports games.

Its a platformer and side scrolling game. Compare it with new side scrolling games and and you will see that its still impressive.

Many games of 1998 has aged badly. JJ2 didn't aged much (it did aged but not as much as other games. Special thanks to JJ+ team ofcourse)

I too think average JJ22 players are within 20~35.

Doesn't JJ2 count time in-engine in 70ths of a second, which would theoretically make >70fps gameplay essentially just artificially padded out with extra frames? Or am I just completely misunderstanding the way JJ2 works?

Anyway, these days, more and more gamers are accepting gameplay over graphics, and going back to the classic games from way back when. Games like Jazz are a perfect example of standing the test of time. Jazz stands up particularly well, as its graphics have aged really well. But, I think Epic's mind-boggling decision of never digitally releasing it is a big limiting factor, and probably the main reason so few people play the game nowadays.

Out of 9 votes so far, 6 are for 21-25, so, yeah, I guess we already have a winner!

So the next question should be: 21, 22, 23, 24 or 25?

EDIT: I say '60 frames' for everything that goes smooth or isn't slow or choppy. Even for real life stuff.

A better name for this thread would've been "How old are you?". I'm almost 16 but I knew the average JJ player is between 21 and 25 years old.
I assume Robo4900 and Smoke NC are 16-20 year olds? c:

It's hard to say when there's those who exclusively play single player, but I'd say 80-100 active every month on estimate. And I'd guess about 50 active every week. When JJ2 is in it's "dead" phase, it probably goes down to about 25-30 active per week.

There are a lot of "lone wolves" for sure, but I don't think they'll make much of a difference for the community, since they do not actively seek to be a part of that community.

I mean, there's not much of incentive to create new content for the game, when there will be nobody to play it. 100 players isn't much, but I believe more than 100 people visit the website on a 3-months basis.

Honestly if I can get just one other person to like a level I've made then I'm satisfied, but that's beside the point. :P

I think about 20-22 is a good estimate for the age of the average JJ2er, considering that it falls in approximately the median between older JJ2 players (born in 1993 and earlier) and the younger generation who started playing the game more recently (born in 1997 and later).

Which leads to the point that it's a pity that Epic doesn't want to re-release the game on GOG or another game sharing platform. This alone would boost the popularity immensely.

I believe that if you look at the majority of new/irregular online players, the average falls into the 16-20 group. Then again, I don't know nearly everyone's age and am not so active online myself. For the average SPer you'd have to account those who revisit the game for nostalgia, so I'd say both 21-25 and 26-30 apply to those who grew up with JJ2 when it was new.

Also, someone should vote 1-5 so we can get our Gus back.

I honestly expected to see some (at least 1) votes at the 1-5 category.
I'm currently 21 and it feels like I'm in the middle. Aaand the poll seem to say the same: 5 votes for younger groups and 5 votes for older groups.

Re-releasing the game miiiight not be the best. I can only think of Town of Salem (browser game) that suddenly got popular thanks to a bunch of youtubers and while it had a cool community before, now it's filled with little kids who keep cheating left and right and don't even speak english (the game is played in the chat so it's a huge problem).
Do we want that? Are we ready for a huuge amount of newcomers who know nothing about the game and/or community and probably won't respect it?
I don't want to sound pessimistic but we should think about this side too.

Depends on the type of exposure really. You're assuming that if it got re-released, it would be featured by popular youtubers. JJ2 also doesn't have much modern appeal.

Not to mention, free2play games tend to have major cheating problems because offenders can just make a new account. A paywall discourages cheating. If we find cheaters on servers, then we just get more moderators.

Treylina's right. Besides, any YouTube exposure Jazz would get from a re-release would likely be from channels like Lazy Game Reviews or Ancient DOS Games, which tend to have fairly mature(And pretty small) audiences.

And, like Treylina said, JJ2 has limited modern appeal. It's like black and white TV -- a lot of people don't even like to watch things in standard definition, and the same applies to gaming.

In summation: A re-release would benefit everyone and have literally no downsides. Epic not releasing their older games is a baffling, and honestly pretty stupid decision. And it's not just Jazz, of course -- Xargon, Epic Pinball, etc. are all names you'll hear big DOS gamers rave about. Hell, even Dare To Dream is a very interesting and creative idea, despite its less than stellar execution.

Again, there's a fair chance the distribution rights (of JJ2, at least) aren't actually with Epic and in limbo after the bankruptcy of both the European and American publishers.

Okay, I'll give you that(And thinking on it, maybe my words were a little harsh), but surely JJ1, Xargon, Epic Pinball, One Must Fall 2097, ZZT, etc. would be okay? Otherwise, there's no way Epic Classics would have lasted as long as it did.

Actually, thinking on it... Did we ever find out why Epic Classics died?

I actually fit in the 11-15 slot, so I guess that would make me some kind of second gen fan? if that makes sense?
1st gen being the people who grew up with the game and 2nd being the first people to discover it after JJA?

also who could that one person over 40 be?

There would be more generations. There's those who discovered it by the first game, and the second being the sequel. Then those who discovered the series (usually JJ2) long after the sequel came out.

I doubt anyone discovered the series by JJA (I can be gladly proven wrong though). It was a pretty big flop and an average game at best, it seems (yes JJ2 was a flop in the US but it was still far more successful).

Darn, now the whole world will see my totally inaccurate vote.

I should have gone for the biggest category so far (21-25) because I myself am part of that.
