JDC season 16 is now over - February 2, 2009 - 7:56 AM
|
 |
I would like to thank everyone who helped out during this season. Season 16 was more active than usual, and we had a lot of events. Overall, I'd say this was one of the better seasons that we've done.
Grytolle won Round 7 with 432 points. CelL came in second with 334 points. Quickz was third with 330.
And as for the overall winner, congratulations grytolle: you are JDC champion. He won with 2487 points, and with a considerable lead over Quickz, who came in second place with 2309 points. Robee managed to win third place, with 2248. CelL also deserves honourable mention, as he came in a close fourth place with 2226.
I hope next season will be just as good. It will most likely take place during the summer.
Awards are coming soon. |

Encore over; season almost ending! - February 1, 2009 - 11:41 PM
|
 |
The encore event progressed smoothly, apart from my fix of Happy Castle bugging out twice in the jailbreak round (SORRY I SUCK). We played CTF, Death CTF, Assault, Jailbreak and TLRS as scheduled. The event lasted almost three hours and was a lot of fun for all those who came and played. Thanks for being there everyone! I don't know if I'll get to doing scores this evening but I'll be sure to have them up as soon as possible!
Also, as you are all aware, the season will be ending in a few hours. I think everyone knows by now who won JDC 16 but if you want to do some last minute dueling, now is the time!
In closing I'd just like to take this oppertunity to tell you guys what a great time I had this season. Coming back to jj2 after a three or four year long near-absence and playing in JDC again has been a blast! I'll be sure to be present during the next season in some shape or form, so see you all during JDC season 17!
Edit:
Scores have been posted. Congratulations to Vegito for winning the event! |

Final event info - January 30, 2009 - 10:01 PM
|
 |
I've updated the info for the final event, and uploaded the levellist. I'll be hosting it tomorrow, and an encore will be hosted on sunday. Both will be worth at least 60 points, possibly more. Expect it to be longer than a normal event too.
Also note that the season is ending at midnight on sunday, my time (PST). Not friday. In other words, the final round is being extended for two days, so you have the weekend to play.
Update by CelL:
I've claimed authority over the final event encore. It'll be hosted by either me or Hitch and will feature a slightly tweaked mappool compared to the original. I'll get to deciding on the levels as soon as I can. Hope to see you there!
Update by EvilMike:
The event has finished. It was very long. I'll do the scores later. If you missed the event, join the encore. Note that the time for the encore was originally a bit... unusual, and I think it's because CelL accidentally set it for an AM time instead of PM time. I'm not sure if it was really a mistake, but I've moved the event 12 hours later anyway.
Update by Hitch:
The map pool for the Final Event Encore has now been uploaded. There's a few minor adjustments from the other map pool hosted on Saturday, so I suggest go check them out. See you guys tomorrow! |

Encore event succesful after all! - January 25, 2009 - 11:31 PM
|
 |
The encore event this evening got VERY close to being canceled or turned into a small event due to only four people showing up during the pregame, one of which had already played in Saturday's event. However, thanks to the persistence of the players present inviting some other Jazzers and some coincidental late joiners we were able to play after all. Thanks for making it possible for this to go through guys!
The event progressed quite smoothly after that: we played CTF, Assassination, Jail Break, Bank Robbery, Ground Force, Team LRS and Assault. We ended up playing longer than usual, both due to the late start and people just feeling like going on. Scoring will probably be a bit tricky but I'll get to it tomorrow, so expect to see scores for the event in about a day at the most.
In other news, there're two events listed for this week: AYCR for Tuesday and HLRS for Friday. A listing for Thursday might just be added as well but don't count out the other days of the week just yet: the chance for something more spontaneous always lurks on the horizon...
Have fun and lots of luck in this last round of the season! |

Fun event - January 25, 2009 - 12:20 AM
|
 |
The event was successful. We played CTF, DCTF, JB, XLRS, AS, GR and BR. Bonus points to you if you can understand all of those acronyms.
Vegito won the event, although Napo came very close and so both of them get a full 50 points. See the rawscores if you are interested in specifics.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to do an encore tomorrow. If somebody else wants to, feel free.
The final event has been scheduled for next Saturday. That event WILL have an encore. It will also likely feature multiple gametypes, though not as many as in today's event.
As a final note, I have decided to extend the season by 2 days, as described in the previous news post. All of the feedback I got on that decision was positive.
Edit by CelL:
I've added a listing for the encore event. It'll be Sunday evening at the same time. Note there is a very small chance I might not be home in time to host the pregame in which case someone else should take over but I do not expect this to happen. I would've scheduled the event for a later time as a precaution but anything after 9.30 GMT+1 just seems to late. |

"It's now Round 7. Have fun." - January 24, 2009 - 7:42 AM
|
 |
Round 7 has begun. This will be the final round of the season, and is worth quite a few points! At the moment it's a good bet who is going to win a season, but this round is definitely important, and will make a difference.
Congratulations to Robee for winning Round 6 with 314 points. Valmango was in second place with 289, and Rew came in a very close third place with 288.
I have scheduled an event for Saturday. Sorry for not posting it very far in advance. The event will be a mix of gametypes, and I will be open to requests from those who are playing. I might go as far as to do a different game mode for each round, if people want. The focus will be on team-based modes, but you shouldn't rule out anything.
One final note I'd like to make is that since rounds this season run from Saturday to Friday, this would mean that the final round will end next Friday, and leave out the weekend. Because of this, I am considering extending Round 7 by two days, making it nine days long. This would make the season run until Feb 1, rather than Jan 30, and would also allow the final event to happen during the season, rather than after it. I'd like to hear your feedback on this, since it's not a confirmed decision yet.
Edit: Oh yeah, and as a special final round limited time bonus offer, points per duel has been increased to 1. |

Sorry to those banned from the event - January 22, 2009 - 10:22 PM
|
 |
My apologies for those people who got unwittingly banned when trying to join this evening's Street Fight Event. Considering no one contacted me on MSN I had no idea this was going on untill the very end of the event when Vegito notified me of it, but apparently anyone who tried to join the server after the start of the event was automatically banned from it.
I'm not sure what caused this but I have a pretty good hunch: before the start of the event I banned a player whose account is banned on JDC, and for some reason I guess this ended up banning anyone who tried to join after that. This may be a bug caused by jj2+ considering I banned the player through remote admin (as I wasn't hosting at the time) but this'll have to be confirmed.
Once again, my apologies to those who were unable to play in the event because of this. I assure you I had no idea this was going on otherwise I'd have ratified it. If there's any interest there's a chance there'll be an encore for this event one of the coming days considering sunday's OvC got cancelled.
EDIT: It seems the problem had nothing to do with jj2+ at all. Apparently Quickz has a router that assigns the same IP adress to everyone who joins his server, which made the IP of the banned player identical to that of whoever else tried to join, thus resulting in everyone being banned. It's a freak occurrence we never could've expected, so remind Quickz not to ban people from his server again any time soon. ;-P |

Bittersweet - January 18, 2009 - 11:04 PM
|
 |
Tonight's OvC event marks the first loss of officials to competitors in the history of JDC. Congratulations for the regulars.
Still, the officials didn't lose their honor entirely! Firstly, the event was won by our very own (save for the very last round...) SuperJazz. Secondly, a breakdown on the points reveals an interesting fact about the total scores:
Competitors 48.1 - 47.9 Officials
Not only it's insanely close, but it's also 48-48 when rounded up. That, combined with the officials' insatiable will for revenge, leads to a rematch OvC event?? Stay tuned... |

Round 6 - January 17, 2009 - 7:53 AM

Round 6 has started. There are only two rounds left in the season! Grytolle won Round 5 with 315 points. Second place was valmango with 281, and in third was CelL with 243.
Other than that, there isn't much more to say for now. See you at the OvC event on Sunday! |

Another Successful Assault Event - January 16, 2009 - 11:17 PM
|
 |
The assault event went well, though it lasted about 30 minutes longer than I planned. I thought it was fun though, and aside from the usual trigger issues, which are always to be expected, nothing went terribly wrong.
In this event I had people rejoin rather than risk glitching the level with /update. Occasionally, this meant other people jumped in the vacant spot before the person could rejoin. When that happened I kicked those people, since it's only fair. To anyone who got kicked in this manner, I apologise. It's nothing personal, it's just that someone was rejoining and needed the spot.
There MIGHT be an encore of the assault event tomorrow.. It really depends if any officials want to host it. The levels we did were fortress of fate, desolation hills x2, assault 3, and cargo ship. I'm not really in the mood to host another assault event, so someone else will have to do it if there is to be an encore. If any officials want to go ahead, please post an event listing. If not, then maybe there will be some other event on saturday... something spontaneous, perhaps...
Coming up on sunday, we have an officials vs competitors event! Officials and admins will be on one team, and regular players will be on the other. Note that we will still try to balance the team, so officials might be temporarily "demoted", or normal users might be temporarily "promoted", so the teams are nice and even.
And, finally, Round 6 will be starting soon. I'll make another news post for that when the time comes. |

Round 5 - January 10, 2009 - 7:30 AM
|
 |
Round 5 has started. The winner of Round 4 was Grytolle with 290 points. In second place was Napo4Caro with 248, and Robee came in third with 242.
There were significantly fewer duels that round than in previous ones, but that is to be expected, since it marked the end of the Christmas holiday. In any case, the season will continue as planned, likely ending after Round 7, and events will be hosted just as often as they were before.
From this point on, each round is worth quite a few points. This one is worth 360, and next round it will be worth 405. If you're aiming to win the season, or place highly, now is a critical time to score points! |

Pit fight failed again! - January 9, 2009 - 10:14 PM
|
 |
I tried to do another pit fight event, but unfortunately we ran into some problems again. The problems weren't as bad as last time, but they were bad enough to make it unplayable.
A few people dropped from the server, but the main problem was that there was MASSIVE chat lag, along with serious packet loss that caused things to be pretty messed up.
In any case, I had a backup planned, so we played pestilence instead. And then when we ran out of levels, we played roast tag. I thought it was fun, though I know that a lot of people prefer team games.
In any case, I've uploaded the playlog for the event. I'm not going to do the scoring yet (this one is going to take a lot of work because we played quite a few games), but I'll have it done by sunday. Roast tag matches will be worth 2x more than the pest matches, since they lasted longer. The event will be out of 30 points.
If any officials want to take a crack at doing the scoring, go ahead (just notify me). Otherwise I'll do it.
In other news, the round is ending in less than 12 hours. See you at the assassination event tomorrow. Remember there might be an encore on Sunday, depending on the level of activity. |

Survivor event over! - January 7, 2009 - 11:34 PM
|
 |
A quick note about the scoring for the survivor event: because we found out after the event that the playlog does not record playerlists for treasure, I was forced to give everyone who did not get first, second or third in a round a big fat whopping zero points. To compensate for this I rounded the highest score to 14 instead of 15 and gave everyone a bonus point for playing in the event.
Apart from that, the event went rather well. After the first round in my server people seemed to be having a lot of trouble with packet loss and whatnot which once again comes to show I really shouldn't host this stuff on this computer, but luckily we were able to continue in Hitch's server which progressed quite smoothly.
Activity seems to have dropped off a slight bit this week but that was to be expected with most people coming off winter break, we still seem to be going strong in general at any rate. Have fun and lots of luck in what remains of the season! |

A spontaneous CTF event will be attempted tonight at about 23:00 CET (midnight GMT+2).
A pregame should be up around twenty-to, and the pass for the event will be "truffles".

Round 4 - January 3, 2009 - 7:35 AM
|
 |
Round 4 has started. Congratulations to grytolle for winning Round 3, with a total of 251 points. In second place was Robee, who had 223, and Ktos, with 212. As usual, this round is worth more points than the previous one.
So far this season has been going quite well. There seems to be more activity in terms of players, and number of duels, compared to previous seasons. This is also the first season in quite some time where the number of active accounts is more than 100 (though not all of them have points). Perhaps this is because of the new system of each round being worth more points, or perhaps it's because of some other reason. Either way, it's good to see. I hope this level of activity continues. If not... well, the people who stick through to the end will be the most likely to win!
For the jailbreak event tomorrow, remember there will probably be an encore on sunday, so don't worry if the server is full. Still, if you really want a spot, I suggest coming to the pregame, which I will host 15-30 minutes before the event. First come, first served.

Assault event listed for thursday - December 29, 2008 - 10:56 PM
|
 |
I've scheduled an assault event for Thursday evening. I'll be hosting it unless someone else is willing to volunteer, which they might want to considering my connection at the computer I'll be on around that time hasn't shown itself to be ideal for hosting. As always a pregame will go up 15 minutes before the start of the event, you are encouraged to join this pregame to secure yourself a spot in the main event.
In other news, I've added the scores for the Team Battle encore event. Technically DarkSonic won the event but due to him having played in the original event on saturday full points are awarded to FawFuL instead, who would have received 39 points otherwise but whose point total also rounds up to 40.

Event over - December 27, 2008 - 9:52 PM
|
 |
There will be an encore hosted tomorrow for those who missed it. Overall the event went well, though there was another problem to do with spectators dropping from the server. Because of this, tomorrow's event will be all team battle, with only one round of team LRS at the end (when it doesn't matter if people crash).
Hopefully this problem will be figured out eventually, but for now it seems that events which require spectators will have to be put on hold. For the next couple of events, expect to see postgames where we take advantage of full servers by running spectator experiments on them...
Oh yeah, and if you intend on playing in the encore, could you post a comment here? It's not a requirement, I'd just like to know how many people want to show up. |

Round 3 - December 27, 2008 - 8:08 AM
|
 |
Round 3 has begun. So far the season has been going well. Remember, this round is worth more points than the previous one, and the value is going to keep going up.
Congratulations to grytolle, who won Round 2 with 209 points, and a considerable lead over SR iR, who came in second place with 171 points. In a close third was Sucer, who finished at 170.
There will be an event in about 12 hours from the time of this news post, and as usual, if it becomes very crowded, an encore will be hosted the next day. If you can't make it in the event, it would probably be best just to wait a day, rather than join late. Also a good idea is to join the pregame which is hosted 15-30 minutes before the event, as it gives you a better chance of getting a spot. |

Pit fight event failed - December 26, 2008 - 8:53 PM
|
 |
Due to some very unusual bugs, the pit fight event has been canceled. Sorry to everyone who came for nothing. A spontaneous event has been organized in its place, but I'm not playing in it. Hopefully it goes fine.
I hope that later in this season we can still do a pit fight event like this, but it seems the problems will have to be worked out first.
To be honest, I'm not sure what happened. It seems though that JJ2+ does not like it when a full server spectates. On my server I kept seeing people randomly getting "download errors" and dropping from the server, which from their point of view was a CTO. Tried to get someone else to host, but a bunch of people wound up dropping from the server too.
This is a problem because the game mode basically requires a full server of spectators. One way I can do this is host a special "arena level" with spectating disabled, and just use triggers and stuff to let people play. That would be very boring to watch though.
Anyway, sorry again. Hopefully we can figure out what happened here. |

Event postponed - December 20, 2008 - 2:32 PM
|
 |
Due to slight organisation problems, the CTF event scheduled for tonight is postponed to tomorrow (Sunday 20:00 GMT). This might make it hard for the people who won't make it, in case a second event might be necessary. We apologize for any trouble.
Update by EvilMike:
It filled up fast so there will be an encore on monday!
Update by CelL:
I'll be hosting the event and moderating it along with Ragnarok and any other officials willing to show up and help out. A pregame will be hosted 15 minutes in advance, you are encouraged to join this pregame to secure yourself a spot in the main event.
I've also set up a Hamachi network as a courtesy to those unable to play without it (I can relate considering I have the same problem) and will keep it up as long as it doesn't seem to be causing a lot of lag. The name will be JDC Season 16 (note that Hamachi is cap sensitive) and the password will be JDC16. Everyone is also encouraged to make use of this network for JDC related games from now on.
Update by Rag:
Okay, scores are added and stuff. Congratulations to PurpleJazz for winning the event. Also, the lowest scorers all joined the last round but all had 0 points due to their teams all being the losing team. If they wish to do so, they can enter tommorow's event and they can have their points here eradicated in order to get the other points in the encore. Just to clarify, these people are BlurredD, DragonVS, FawFuL and Snopyir.
Thanks for coming everybody.

Round 2 has started! - December 20, 2008 - 8:37 AM
|
 |
Round 2 has begun. There will be an event later today to mark the start of the round. If a lot of people show up, an encore will probably be hosted on Sunday.
Grytolle came in first place in Round 1, with 170 points. Valmango came in second place with 161 points, and DarkBunny came in third, also with 161 (it's not quite a tie here, since there is actually a difference of less than 1 point, which the system will not display).
Now that Round 1 has ended, opponent quality becomes a factor in your score. If you're playing for a win, make sure your opponents are good players! And remember, each round is worth more points than the previous one. |

Reminder to verify your duels - December 19, 2008 - 11:37 PM
|
 |
Round 2 is starting in less than 12 hours, and when it begins, all unverified duels that were submitted before December 18 will be deleted. If you have any real duels that still need to be verified, it is recommended you do that soon.
A couple of duels on that page look like they are accidental double (or even triple) submissions. In that case don't worry about them - they will be deleted when the round changes, and don't count as fake duels as long as they are unverified.
Speaking of fake duels, I will also be doing weekly "maintenance" today which means going through this round's duel submissions and deleting all the ones that look suspicious. Don't be surprised if a few duels disappear, since the guidelines (found in the Information section of the site) are pretty strict. If one of your duels is deleted, don't worry about it. It doesn't mean that you necessarily broke a rule, or we think you cheated. It just means the duel was noted as suspicious. It's extremely rare for people to get in trouble for this. Think of it as a final step in the verification process: first you have to verify a duel, and then later on an admin checks if it seems OK. |

Some thoughts on Domination - December 17, 2008 - 10:44 PM
|
 |
Well, the domination event has ended.
It was certainly interesting, being the first time that gametype has been used in a large game. I have a few observations to share about it, and I'd like to hear your comments, especially if you were there in the event.
I noticed that while the better team does tend to win, the games are very chaotic. Obviously, all the action is around the control points, and when you have 5 or even 10 people all competing for one point, in an area smaller than 1 screen, it gets to be a bit crazy. There's still an element of skill, but the level of chaos means that it does feel like luck is a factor.
What I think this is means is while domination is indeed a fun gametype, it is more suited to smaller games. In other words, rather than using it for large events, I think it should be used for small events of 3vs3 and 4vs4. Note that users are very much allowed to organize their own events of this size. If you want to self-organize a domination event, go ahead and do it. The scoring will be slightly more complicated than CTF, but it's not difficult. I think DOM will also be suited to spontaneous events too, because those events can attract less players.
Another observation I have is that I think the gametype actually does have potential for large games, but the current levels are not designed for that. I think a moderately large level, with a layout structured around 2 teams (rather than the battle-style layout that is more common) would work well. I also think that such a level would need some sort of spawn delay, as is seen in some assault levels (preferably the kind that causes everyone to spawn at the same time). The spawn delay would keep the level from becoming too crowded, and the team-based layout would help prevent the sort of freeforall chaos that occured in this event.
If any of you want to make a level like this, it would be cool to see how it works out. I might make one myself.
In other news, the listing for the Round 2 opening event has been posted. It's another CTF event, and being organized by Ragnarok. He's going to be focusing on old classics for this one, and preferably NO PITS. |

Domination event scheduled for Wednesday - December 16, 2008 - 3:58 AM
|
 |
Since we didn't get a chance to try out Domination during the opening event, I've scheduled an event for Wednesday. This won't be the only domination event of the season: we're planning on doing a big one during a weekend, as well (but probably not this weekend). I figured it would be a good idea to try out the gamemode in a less important event in the middle of the round though, since it's never been done before.
One thing I'd like to know is if you are fine with the time I've scheduled for it. On weekends (and Fridays, which is a day off for me) I can easily host events at any time of the day, but during the week I'm quite a bit more limited, and 22:30 - 23:00 GMT is about the earliest I can possibly host something if I can even host at all, since I live way out in Vancouver, Canada. In the past I would have just hosted events during the late evening, my time, but back then JDC had mostly players from the America, while these days it's mostly Europe, so the times obviously have to cater to that now.
I'd like to know if this time is reasonable, or if it is simply too late for most people (events would go past midnight in mainland Europe). If it does turn out to be too late, I suppose I'll just stick to doing events on Fridays and weekends. Comments to this newspost will be appreciated.
Update:
The event has been moved back 2 hours, to a more reasonable time. Almost all the comments I got were that the event was too late. Luckily I'm on Christmas break right now, or I wouldn't be able to do this.

Opening Event is now over - December 15, 2008 - 12:11 AM
|
 |
The opening event encore was successful, and quite a large number of people came. Even more than the one on Saturday, in fact, which was a surprise because the pregame was almost empty until a few minutes before the scheduled time.
Note that the four people who got 0 are people who played in Saturday's event, since the rules say you can only get points for the first one you play. If you want to see detailed scores (and see what those people who scored 0 would have got), check the spreadsheets here.
Congratulations to FawFul for winning the one today. |

Event is full! - December 13, 2008 - 8:38 PM
|
 |
The opening event got a full server in 5 seconds flat. Even I wasn't able to join, and I suspect that's the case with a lot of other people too.
Because of this, the opening event will be hosted AGAIN on Sunday, for those who are missing out on today's event. If you can't join, and feel like you can wait an extra day, that would be a good idea!
Update: The scores have been posted. Congratulations to Enigma.
For those of you who couldn't make it, see you tomorrow. |

Season 16 Has Begun - December 13, 2008 - 7:51 AM
|
 |
JDC Season 16 has officially started! You should now be able to submit duels and 2 on 2's. Also be sure to attend the opening event, happening in a little over 12 hours from the time of this news post.
Note that the event may very well be a full server. If this occurs, then players will participate on a first come, first serve basis. If you find the server is full you are welcome to try and join periodically, since you can still get points for joining late.
If a very large number of people wind up missing the event due to server capacity, another event might be hosted on Sunday for those who miss the Saturday one.
Also, note that we have an IRC channel at #jdc on irc.quakenet.org. This channel can be used to coordinate duels, and officials might also be present during events if you want to talk to them. |

Season begins on Saturday - December 9, 2008 - 11:30 AM
|
 |
JDC Season 16 will officially begin this Saturday, December 13. I will activate the season at around midnight, my time, which is 8:00 GMT. The opening event will be at 20:30 GMT, which should show up in your own time zone on the left side of the page, assuming you have an account and are logged in.
With that out of the way, I might as well say what's new for this season.
One scoring change this season is that each round is worth more points than the previous one. At the moment, it is set so it increases by 45 points per round, starting at 180 in round on and increasing all the way to 450 points in round 7. In every round except the first, opponent quality will be worth 1/3 of the points, while roast:fall will determine the rest. Note that 45 is a somewhat arbitrary number, and may be tweaked in the days to come.
The reason for this change is twofold. The first is to simply make the season more interesting, by "raising the stakes" as the season progresses. The second reason is we have observed that activity often drops off towards the end of the season, and by raising the point value like this we hope to reward players who play all the way through to the end. The first few rounds will probably still be the busiest, but at least this way we are encouraging people to keep playing.
To balance this change of awarding more points for rounds, events will also be worth a little bit more. In the past, big events would be worth 25-30 points. In this season, big events will be worth 40-50 points (mostly depending on size and length).
Another change we have made is remove the "quality exponent" part of the score calculations. This part of the formula was really experimental, and didn't really do much in the end aside from making things more complicated. We have removed it in the interest of making the system a bit simpler. What does this mean to you, in the end? Pretty much absolutely nothing.
We're hoping that this will be a fun and exciting season for everyone. If you would like to discuss matters pertaining to this JDC season, there is a JCF thread in the tournaments forum. |

New Season - December 7, 2008 - 3:04 AM
|
 |
Source: Jazz2online.com
A new JDC season should be starting soon for this winter. The current planned date for it to begin is the weekend of the 13th/14th, and it should run for the same length as an average season.
So far we’ve got everything in order, and the site itself should be updated for the new season sometime in the next few days. Throughout the next week we’ll probably also be making small changes to the site in preparation. One of those changes will of course be the obligatory new logo. At the moment, we’re not planning on running a new logo contest for this season, but if you have any suggestions or feel like contributing, feel welcome to. Otherwise, we have a very special logo prepared already.
Also of note is that this season will be the first to feature domination as an official game mode. Expect at least one major event to focus on DOM.
Another news post will be made once the site is up and running. Once that happens, you should log in so your account is marked as active for season 16. |
