Information on netsplit (1 entry)

To understand what a netsplit is, you have to know how an IRC network works. An IRC network, such as QuakeNet (where #jj2 is currently located) usually consists of several servers, located all over the world and run by several companies, ISPs or individuals.
Everyone on an IRC network is connected to only one server. Usually this is a server that is geographically close, but anyone can be connected to any server.
Now if a connection between two (or more) servers'is severed, there is obviously no connection between the users on the servers that got severed. Because of this, users on server A will see all users on server B quit IRC, while all users on server B will see everyone on server A disconnect. You'll usually see something like this:

(13:37:05) * Dethman has quit IRC (*.net *.split)

When the connection between the two servers is fixed (a so-called "relink") it will be possible to talk with users on a different server again.
Netsplits usually occur because of excessive lag or a socket problem on a server.

Lately there have been discussions if #jj2 shouldn't move to another IRC network because on the current network, QuakeNet, netsplits are sort of common. Monolith, a #jj2 op, opened another #jj2 channel in the SlashNET IRC network. Some users also go there, but probably #jj2 will stay at QuakeNet.
