Theming and Eyecandy – 2 out of 5

I ran down the first level in the pack and suddenly was utterly dismayed. It suffers from the same problem as Epic’s levels kind of do – while it’s supposed to be a cave, why does it look so darn open?! There’s something unrealistic floating in the background too, making it look like the place is actually a lush grassland dubbed as a cave because instead of sky you see a giant drab wall. Violet’s example level showed a cave-like environment, and that is where the standard was set. As soon as I got past level one, I got to the second one. My Spaz started in a cavelike thing again (which looked way better than the first level overall), and then he proceeded to the surface. I was immediately dismayed (again \\o/) to see that there is nothing in the background! Just the sun floating below the sky and something supposed to be large tree branches to help out the trees on layer 4. Putting a few mountains in the background would be a way better thing to do, and Littlefreak could even try to make the building you approach in another level out of some tiles. The aforementioned trees look kind of dead too, as for the most part they’re devoid of any kind of leaves. Are the trees dead for a reason or another? Anyway, I found my way out of the dead tree canopy and approached the building, even though nothing in level 2 looked like one. SURPRISE! Level 3 suffers from the same problem as 1 does! LF barely used any of the cool possible effects WSF features, and the eyecandy turns out being worse than in the example levels again. On the contrary to the first three levels, level 4 actually uses background eyecandy. The problem is, they have been borrowed from Mike’s battle level! Bah. Other than that it looked just like level 3, maybe except for the sewer environment, which was kind of original and is the one of the few things saving the eyecandy from getting the lowest score possible.

Gameplay – 2 out of 5

The gameplay in those 4 levels wasn’t really any better. They were all rather short and easy (I played on Hard). And yet again, the most disappointing level is level 1! Considering the open structure of that level, I just jumped above most of the enemies and dodged the rest of them. Blah! No challenge at all. On the contrary, the latter levels were pretty challenging, but not because they had some extremely well done traps. Level 2 is evil because lots of the branches in the dismal tree canopy are on layer 5 and thus it takes you a while to climb up after you crashed a certain trigger crate (why would anyone leave a switch opening the door of a fortress in all open?). Then you fight the Tuf Turtle Boss (no real challenge either) and approach level 3. In one certain spot, there’s a row of doors and you need to do a certain thing to open/destroy them. The problem is, you are supposed to figure out what do you need to do, and it obviously takes a while and is rather tedious. After that you must destroy a crate with a frog (why with a frog? =( ), and then face a few demons in a small room with collapsing scenery. Fun? Not really. Then comes the rather tedious as well level 4. You need to figure out what to shoot in order to proceed a few times, destroy a few crates, and approach the sewer. The sewer is probably the coolest part of the whole levelpack. You fall into something like acid, and must quickly get out. Then your character gets dizzy and sees himself on an airboard (coincidientally enough, I felt rather dizzy on that certain part as well ;D), and gets out. If the sewer part wasn’t this short, the gameplay itself would get a 3 instead of a 2. However, it’s extremely short for one reason or another. Anyway, your character exits the sewer, passes a collapsing bridge and fights something supposed to be a blur wannabe (As if me and Defost weren’t enough.) and looking like an Uterus boss. The arena was barely challenging at all, so the boss died and everyone lived happily ever after. Blah. Uninteresting gameplay.

Eventing – 2 out of 5

The eventing was also floppy. Most of the ammo was just scattered around in some random forms, and so were the coins. All the bonuses require 20 coins (more variety required =( ) and often they’re overpowered. Level 1 lets you choose between a Bouncer PU or a Toaster PU, Seeker PU in level 3 and Bouncer PU again in level 4. So if you pick Toaster PU in level 1, you will get Bouncer in level 4 anyway, so what’s the point of choosing one over another one?

Summary
  • A few original things in level 4…
  • Basically the rest.

Overall
This wasn’t all that good. Doesn’t really apply to today’s standards, and most of it is rather evil and tedious. The level 4 is semi-cool as it has an original part, which is the sewers. Unfortunately, not much else is original here, so…

EDIT: This was kind of too harsh.

The storyline of this level pack is simple but funny and also original, Jazz needs to go on adventure for days to only bring food and drinks to Eva! The levels are all like one map but the storyline and enemy’s are changed in all of them, very original! The shop is also nice, at first i thought those items where real.. May the BeachTown map needed some more eyecandy, and the map may needed something bigger too, but in general this download is recommed, and will get a 7.5 from me! Keep going on with this!

First thing is that I said in the readme that I’m unable to test if the trigger system works in Internet mode because I’m unable to play over the internet. So that’s possibly not my fault. Second thing is the start position + text strings are hardly reachable and it is nearly impossible to kill someone from there with your blaster, also for that stuff I put a full energy carrot inside every weapon room. The room with the fast fire gun instead of powerup has no powerup because TNT powerup doesn’t work correctly. The thing with weapon rooms are unfair could be right, though (<— spelled right now?) the room with the Ice Powerup not only has RFs, it also has the RF POWERUP. Also seeker room has only one weapon instead of two.
No TNT in battle, heck you are right that’s my fault.
Design? OK, I see it’s not really great. Sorry.
For the eyecandy I do not agree with you, at least I don’t agree it’s buggy because there are no tilebugs I could find, also on the bottom it’s not dull, on the platforms it’s hardly possible to put eyecandy. I don’t know why layer 3 gets confusing for you, because all the stuff (except a few) is before walls which shouldn’t disturb anybody.

The entire concept is WAY too bugged. First of all, this uses TRIGGER ZONES which work only for those who activate them. SECOND, this could’ve been made with sucker tubes and such stuff to preventing campers to sit at weapon area. Anyway, onto the level.

Start positions and text strings are put on the no fire zones so if someone steps on those, they can shoot there. And of the rooms has fast fire event inside instead of powerup.

Ammo placement is heck unfair. One room has got ICE POWERUP and RFs, while other has got SEEKER PU. Also, there is TNT. NEVER PUT TNT IN BATTLE.

This level has WAY TOO MUCH platforms. Bunch of random platforms with springs of them is most poor design possible in a battle level. Those springs add to flow, though (LOOK AT ME IT’S SPELLED T*H*OUGH NOT TOUGH).

Background layers are ripped from easter levels, not best thing possible. Layer 4 eyecandy is dull and buggy, and layer 3 stuff became annoying and confusing after a while of playing.

Overall, this level is just… bad. Concept is bugged. USE BETATESTERS NEXT TIME. No download reccomendation.

Yet another pack :!.

All levels:

EYECANDY: NOT good on the first level, but exotcus is a hard tileset, so i wont complain about that. The other 3 levels are OK. (Like the idea for a storm)

ITEMS: Again, the first not so good, but it’s better then the eyecandy though. The 2 after that are OK (again!) But the 4th one, you thought more about TRIGGER CRATES than AMMO.

CARROT PLACEMENT:
For the last 3 levels have great carrot placement. But on level 1, there is hardly any carrots.

ENEMIES: Levels 1, 3 and 4 have great enemy placement. But you kind of overused the enemies on level 2. I keep getting killed because of the Monkies.

AND FINALLY, GAMEPLAY: Again, levels 2, 3 and 4 have exelent gameplay.
But for level 1, It’s is confusing because you have to do a maze whilst being covered up by layer 3. It took me 10 minutes to get confused, so i had to go to the level creator to find out what i had to do.

RATE……………

Oh, i forgot:

SIZE:

Level 1 is too short!!!! Level 2 is too big!! Level 3 and 4 are just right (3 bears rip off, it was a moment waiting to happen).

RATING: 7.2

FUN-O-METER: 7.7

FINAL COMMENT: Phew!! Level 1 is the dissapointment of the 4 levels there. Surprizingly, level 3 had no mistakes at all!!

ill review this just u watch, seeing as i told nim how to use MCEs.

;) here is review i said i would write, ok here goes:

Eyecandy: The Eyecandy is the normal one i think, but it isn’t exceptional or bad or excellent or anything it is just the original eyecandy for the tilesets, however there were some extra effects added to them (+1) which uppens my rating. There were a few bugs on the 1st and 2nd lvl.The eyecandy is above average here, not fantastic, just close to that though. Gameplay: I hate Lori so i won’t even talk about how that is, It is cool how there are places with water, and you get hurt if you stay in. I really like that. But it is sometimes annoying to go through the little passageways you can’t see, this sort of makes this a pack that will take a while to do… i kind of like that. It is annoying how most of the parts in the 3rd and 4th lvl are little passageways. This is great though. The MCEs are cool, well what you did was cool. And the boss was funny. Placement: The placement was good, but it kind of messes up a bit, loads of ammo, then gems, then back to ammo, and then hardly any food…. it goes on, but the placement was good, the pickups were in convienient places, which is good. This is a decent pack, which i think deserves a 7.5, i may be overrating, but it is my opinion.

Please may I rate this:

EYECANDY: Hmmmmm, the good news is: You have eycandy.

The bad news is that there isn’t much.

ITEMS: There are carrots and ammo. You put in a bonus 40 warp witch I know you cannot have a Bunny standing by a thing with 40 on it (Bo Ho). You put dozens of Crates in there, loads are trigger crates.

ENEMIES: There are only about 15 enemies in the level.

RATING: 6.7

FUNOMETER: 5.8

FINAL COMMENT: Good and bad.

This level pack has an interesting storyline. I liked it! Also the usage of the tilesets was good! But some levels were the same with other ones. This makes the pack long by an easy way. You can use the same levels but don’t use them to find the way back! So, this pack deserves a 7.5!

Well this pack is ok. The storyline was funny, so I guess that deserves some credit. There wasn’t really any eyecandy. Some areas were confusing because you couldnt find the way out (or in). Overall rating 7.0 Download? Maybe

BTW dx you should try comparing packs with other packs before rating them. No offense, but you overrate lvls too much ;).

its just one map and a shop, but the storyline r0x. the OverlorD da frog is funny very origineel anyway. I liked that you must play with jazz. and that chuck finding and the others was very cool. This will be fun for cOOp. ammo placemand and the carrots placed… ar good also. i like all to’s secrets. you get 0.5 points + because Beach not is over-used and its a hard-use tileset ( acceotr for Candy Wars from firesword and BlackRaptor they ar extreemly good in ctf building. ) anyway

I’m a bit sleepy today, so i’m only going to write short paragraghs. EYECANDY: Low…… But not bad in the backround though. A little bit more work on this then eyecandy could really improve this.

SIZE: Mediocre, again, a little more work on this, you’ll improve.

ENIMIES: Third times a charm, the enemy placement just right.

ITEMS: Looks like items are not bad, there are a couple of metel crates to stomp on.

FINAL COMMENT: 6.5 ain’t bad, it’s over average. I cannot be bothered to write any more.

Hmm…well, let’s review this systematically, shall we?

Eyecandy: Kind of dull. Not much in the background except the usual skeletons and the falling stalacites. I didn’t much care for the falling stalacites and the small areas with the blocks looked kind of tacky. You should have used different tiles for those areas. Bilsy’s arena didn’t look great either and the entire level was kind of drab. At least there were no major tilebugs.
Eyecandy score: 6.0

Enemy Placement: Only two kinds of baddies, minus the boss. Demons were everywhere. The Demons aren’t really powerful enemies, and they were about the only obstacles in the level, minus a few Bats and spikes. The Demons were everywhere, and not particularly strategically placed. A few more types of enemies to support the Demons would have been better.
Enemy placement score: 5.5

Gameplay: The level was a bit too short and linear. It was too easy and the use of the trigger crates wasn’t really apparent enough. Plus, you should have made Bilsy’s arena smaller. Not necessarily a BAD level, but could have used a bit more work.
Gameplay score: 6.5

Final Thoughts: If it’s your first level, it’s a very good level. A bit more length, some different enemy types (and for heaven’s sake, fewer Demons!) and fixing some eyecandy issues would improve this level dramatically.
Final Score (Not an average): 6.0

Shiverz Review

Gameplay

When I first started this level and with my sister we thought maybe Jazz and Spaz had different starting positions but they didn’t. Unfortunetly this was quite easy to get through unless you fell into the water and got stuck then me and my sister were completly lost.

Baddies ‘n Other Events

There wasn’t very many baddies there were a few turtles this was disappointing as it made it easier. There also wasnt any food and some coins there was one secret part we found with toasters in however.

What Would Have Made It Better

More multiplayer things like when you can jump on each others heads to reach high places or wallclimb. I think more puzzling parts should have been added and different start positions like Jazz having to unlock parts for Spaz and then Spaz unlock parts for Jazz

Conclusion

I wouldn’t recommend d/ling this because its easy to complete has no enemies. If it had been a little more puzzling with weapons and food to make it better the rating would be higher.

Rating

5 for a try at making a co-operative only level. [This review has been edited by Shiverz]
