Description

This is a little level I made to prove to BlurredD that soccer in JJ2 can be done. It looks like fun, but I can\‘t test it because I can\‘t host. It requires at least three people, one of which will be the scorekeeper. It is set up in CTF with teams. The object is to shoot the Turtle Shell to the other team\‘s goal, whereupon the scorekeeper checks a mark on a piece of paper he keeps handy and a new shell is set out. It may not work over the internet, but you can play with a friend on the same computer.

I have to be honest that the most surprising thing here is that BlurredD was not already aware of a completely already existant gametype that has been common in even the most basic of hotels since 1999. Well, anyway, what we have here is a demolevel for the somewhat overused “soccer” gametype. To be honest, it seems to me to be much, much more like hockey than anything else. You run around, trying to hit the shell off of the edge on the opponent’s side. Nothing new here. The only new addition is a scorekeeper’s box which is sealed with a trigger crate. Unfortunately, there really is no practical use for such a box, as you can be pretty much anywhere to keep score. Still, it could be useful in some situations. Is there anything wrong with this level? Yes, there are several things. First of all, like the hotels that started such levels, this just does not feature much in the way of creativity. Organization is another problem. There is no automatic team arraingement. Also, for a seperately released level, it would have been nice to at least of had some method of scoring. Oh well. Now for the review.

TILESET/TILESET USE: Labrat is used fairly well in this situation. There is nothing particurally amazing about the use of Labrat, but it actually is quite decent. This level is, however, quite small, so this is a necessary thing, and not overboard. Regardless of the size of this level, the tileset use is above average. I will not, like anything in the rest of this level, rate this category, however. Just think of it as above average.
Pros: Very nicely done in general.
Cons: Nothing over the top.
Rating: N/A

WEAPON/ITEM/ENEMY PLACEMENT: There is not much to say in this category. The only ammo in this entire level is ice, apparently intended to freeze either your opponents or the shell (it is never specified). Other than that, you will have to use your trusty old blaster to defend against the other team.
Pros: Nothing much to say here, being that there is only ice.
Cons: Perhaps something other than the simple standard ice would have been cool.
Rating: N/A

ORIGINALITY: This level is not particurally original. Many other levels of this nature have been made. Still, apparently neither the author nor BlurredD is aware of this. The idea of using CTF is indeed unique (scratch the team rants earlier). However, it also allows you to kill opponents which is…unusual. Still, it probably lends an interesting twist to gameplay. Regardless, this is not very original.
Rating: N/A

GAMEPLAY/DESIGN: What is there to say here? Not much, obviously. Gameplay is fairly fun and all, but just is not anything that amazing. It is not new, nor is it unique to this level. It has been around for ages. That is all there is to it. This is a demo level to a concept that deserves no demo, as it is nearly as old as time. Still, this is fun to play online every so often.
Pros: Fun, sort of.
Cons: Nothing new.
Rating: N/A

REPLAY VALUE/FUN FACTOR: “What is there to say here? Not much, obviously. Gameplay is fairly fun and all, but just is not anything that amazing. It is not new, nor is it unique to this level. Still, this is fun to play online every so often.” That is pretty much it.

Cons: N/A.
Rating: N/A

OVERALL (not an average): I think the above more or less sums it up. It is fun, but really not deserving of a rating. It is not a new concept, and demo levels really should not be rated in the first place. That is all I have to say about it.
Pros: Pretty fun.
Cons: Not original.
Rating: N/A

Expectations:
Graphics: 3.2 – Gameplay: 1.2 – Originality: 1.0 – Fun Factor: 1.0 – Overall: 2.0

Review after actually seeing the level:
GRAPHICS: Nothing to write home about. Pretty standard labrat, with some X/Y/1/1 layer 5, and a little background eyecandy. There’s also a vertical pipe which doesn’t go down far enough and just stops. There are a few tile bugs with the metal stuff as well.
Pros: …it’s ok.
Cons: Bugs! Yay!
Rating: 4.5

GAMEPLAY: Well, it’s a soccer level. Thus, it has no interesting gameplay. Right? Right. The level’s gameplay makes no attempt to improve the soccer/hockey/football/volleyball/tennis/pingpong/etc gametype: simply a generating turtle shell on top of a platform. Oh, and you get some ice. I have no idea why. Would not Toaster or Electros be more helpful?
Pros: The turtle shell generates.
Cons: It’s a soccer level.
Rating: 1.2

ORIGINALITY: Ok, I can think of three new things here. One is the idea of having a scorekeeper. I’m not sure WHY there’s a scorekeeper, as I can’t see anyone bothering to play this, but it’s a new idea. Two, you get some ammo. Ice. Again, no idea why. Three, instead of TNT, the turtle shell fall off the bottom of the level and eventually self destruct. Yay!
Pros: A few new things.
Cons: None of them are paticularly interesting.
Rating: 3.5

FUN FACTOR: Oh, come on. It’s a soccer level. There’s nothing in the way of gameplay, and as a result, nothing in the way of entertainment. There’s a possibility someone will get this gameplay to work someday, but it has a looooong way to go.
Pros: N/A
Cons: N/A
Rating: 1.0

OVERALL: It’s just a soccer level. It has better eyecandy then most, and the turtle shell falling off of the level is new, and the platform’s too small, but it remains just that – a soccer level.
Pros: N/A
Cons: Hello? It’s a soccer level.
Rating: 2.2

Well ,there’s kind of an idea in it… but this gets boring real fast. Maybe, the same type of game would be more fun in a bigger level, why not with obstacles. But, in a bigger level, the goalkeeper might have a problem… Another problem is the fact that the shell can get buttstompt, and broken. That way it would be to easy in a bigger level to prevent the shell from going into a goal. In a small level, the other player might not act quikly enough to do that. But this gametype sucks in a small level, so were kinda getting in a vicious cercle(I don’t know if the word “vicious cercle” exists in english :P).

I won’t give this a rating, since I consider it as some sort of demo level to show a gametype. And the soccer gametype already existed before today, which leaves me with nothing to rate.

Hmmmm wouldn’t be much fun to play as the level is very, very small and it is just a flat field. Maybe if you had slopes and stuff on the field. Also this reminds me of a level someone made for an old first person game. The level had you with rocketlaunchers trying to shoot each other into the goals which would result in them being disintergrated!!

Ahh… I knew I would lose if I tried vision over profit… You can’t have toasters or elecroblasters as they would destroy the turtle shell. The object of the scorekeepers box is so they don’t get in the way.

A failed expirement then. I wish I could delete it. Delete it, delete it now!

See labratkid, that’s why I put in the ice. Freeze the other player and score, or just shoot better. And you were wondering what it was for. And by the way, how was I supposed to know that it was over used?!? There aren’t any other soccer, hockey, or ping-pong levels on the site, save the one just uploaded!

Good idea but it’s impossible because all you have to do is shoot it, if you just stand there and shoot you’re ok, so the only way to score is to be stupid enough to jump over the shell.

For the record, I didn’t say it wasn’t possible, just that it wouldn’t work completely. But I might be jumping to conclusions considering my past experiences with the concept. So yes, I have heard of it and I have seen several versions of it some while ago. I’ve even made a trigger filled, automated version myself back in 2k1. I recall my level didn’t work completely—probably because of lag.
