Description

Four small battle levels from a long time ago. They’re not that great, but I never uploaded them to J2O at the time, and I keep losing them. So far I always managed to get them back from other people’s cache folders (thanks, cooba) but after I had to go asking around again this weekend I figured I might as well upload them to J2O! You may recognise especially ‘Molecular Moocows’; a bigger, better, more eye-searing version of it was included as ‘Superslick Santa Showdown’ in gg no re, a collaborative level pack effort.

I originally announced this level pack on the JCF, all the way back in 2004, with the following comment:

Due to the in my opinion too strict review policy of Trafton and Violet I decided not to upload my newest JCS creation on J2O, but instead post a topic about it on the JCF, so you can give comments in any way you want, regardless of the detail.

The pack consists of four battle levels, nothing very special. They were all made a long time ago but I never really finished them. However a few days ago I did that and made another HTML review and planned to release it, so here it is.

Who knows what that was all about! Unfortunately the HTML readme seems to have disappeared. Anyway, here it is, now safely archived for posterity.

Refuges from that familiar school of level design that places a new thing every few tiles and doesn’t worry about petty things like “overall layout” or “dead ends.” Raven Pride is comparatively normal, despite managing to be both incredibly platformy and also incredibly cramped, but the other three go wild with tubes, vines, weird shapes, and everything else. It’s a style that can only possibly work in battle but can be a lot of fun to mess around in. Sometimes it’s a little hard to see what’s going on, and the layouts aren’t always quite as conducive to exploring as you might expect, but in general sometimes it’s just nice to play around in something where you can’t predict the rest of the layout based on sound level design principles. Get a lot of players together and chase each other around the weirdly shaped blocks.

They’re quite dated now, but I’ve always liked them, so there’s that nostalgia factor.

(The dude in the thread was probably loading Techno Terror with a different version of the tileset that had the same filename, because Blade did that sometimes)
