Hi. I was just wondering what a clan was?

In my history class, I learnt about how a clan is a tribal family or group. That is really cool! though I don't know why they exist in Jazz 2? Does it mean someone is barbaric if they asre in a clan? Should I avoid 'GpW', 'CC', 'DM' etc?
