Chapter 3
The large starport was carpeted by a grey layer of asphalt, dotted with flat landing pads, vertical lauch towers, and protective hangars. It was a technological monolith of space-faring science, servicing thousands of starships each day. It was a jewel of economical, scientific and military might in the relatively pristine Carrottus forest.
As Nius and the Nom disembarked from their rugged passage, a vista of towering, gothic structures and shining, steel buildings. In the distance, toward the center of the city, a great crowd could be seen, and the sound of blaring speakers could be dimly heard at such a seperation.
"Why are you here?" The Nom asked, as inquisitive as before.
Nius was abit confused. Why was this random Nom, who he'd never met before, asking so many questions about him?
"I'm getting transport to Diamondus..."
"And why are you going to Diamondus?" Nius didn't awnser, and just kept walking toward the city.
"Why are you here?" Nius returned.
"I am...on the road to find out."
As the unlikely pair continued to walk toward the city, the sound of the rabble of a crowd, and intensly loud speakers grew.
"What do you suppose is going on?" Nius asked.
"It is the king, presenting his new fleet and delivering his ultimatum to Jardinin." Nius looked up, and high in the sky, there hovered seven massive warships, long and detailed, a deep and menacing grey, with dozens of smaller ships moving about them.
"A new fleet? Those ships are huge, big enough to be energy tankers!" Energy tankers where the massive, cavernous starships that transported anti-matter in internal plasma bays, the anti-matter being needed for all anti-matter hyperdrive engines. If they weren't as huge as they were, they'd create a matter reaction and explode.
"Indeed, each of them is two miles in length. And they're engineered for war." The Nom said ominously.
"Impossible, with power that great, they could decimate the galaxy!" Nius turned to the Nom, but when he did, he was gone.
Nius stopped in his tracks. It was flat terrain for miles around...and he couldn't just dissapear.
Heavy smoke filled the small, dark room, giving it a heavy atmosphere. Several creatures lounged about it, but their identities were closely guarded by the shadow infensting the place. A gentle rapping came on the old, wooden door, but the inhabitants of the place paid it no mind, still minding glasses and breathing deeply. Only one did, who rose up and strode to the door. He was tall, tall enough to be a Medivan, but no where near as powefully built, and long, flowing hair and ears belied his rabbit identity. He was clothed in a cloak that dragged along the ground, kicking up the low mist that hung there.
He stood infront of the door, and slowly turned the brass door handle, and opened it. As it did, a flood of the smoke flew out, and hit the rabbit that stood outside in it's face.
"It's you," The tall rabbit said, "come in." The new rabbit was significantly shorter than the other, and must've been intimidated by him. Once the door closed again, the thickness of the air returned to it's former level.
The lounging creatures at last turned to look at the newcomer, three of them in all. By his manner, the new rabbit was very nervous. The tall one ambled to the center of the room, where a small, black canister exuded the smoke that filled the room.
Twisting a knob, it stopped releasing the smoke, and soon it drifted out of the room. Though clearer now, the room was still dreadfully dark.
"Cebe!? Our gas!" One of the creatures, with a femenine voice, protested, moving her propped up feet to the floor with dissaproval.
"Deal with it. Our charge has arrived." Cebe said, with a slight accent, gesturing toward the blue rabbit that stood next to it.
"He's a young one, isn't he?" A creature, this one with a gruff, deep voice, asked on the other side of the room. The blue rabbit didn't respond.
"Hey, are you sure you can handle where you're going, kid?" The third being said, with a smaller, but still definatley masculine voice.
"Shut up, you two. He's paying us fifty-thousand imperial credits."
"He must want to get there pretty bad. You running from the law, kid?" The female voice asked. When the blue rabbit gave no awnser, she stood up and walked infront of the rabbit. She clearly too was of the same race, rabbit, and had reddish-gray fur, from what could be seen in the dim light. She was only slightly taller than the blue rabbit, which was a slight relief to him. She grabbed his chin, looking at him intensely.
"Silent, eh? What's your name?"
"N-nius." She winked at him, then relinquished her grasp.
"Nius? Funny name." A moment passed.
"Ah...I suppose you'll want to see the ship?" Cebe asked. Nius nodded.
"This way." Cebe extended a long, gloved arm towards another flimsy, wooden door. The two of them walked to it, while the female rabbit turned a valve on the canister, reclined again, and smoke once more filled the room.
On the other side of the wooden door was a large hanger, with a large circle in the ceiling, that clearly would open up to facilitate the ship's movement. At the center of the hanger was a sleek, elegantly designed ship, with smooth, organic curves and black, irridescent hull.
"Beautiful. How does it fly?" Nius asked.
"I'm sure a test flight will demonstrate that for you."
