heheh, there are a few ways, but lemme start with the basics.
1. PSP Roolz
2. The darkest non-transparent black you can get is #07000B (I'm using the html color code). You can edit that value in PSP when you choose a color. A nice transparent color to use is #5700CB (the blue-ish one).
3. To make the black un-transparent all you have to do is go to colors->edit palette and change all the black colors to #07000B.
I have reason to believe that you didn't include the Jazz2 colors in your palette. If you re-map it would only include the Jazz2 colors and remove all the colors you included. There is a nice way to get the Jazz2 palette:
1. Go into the JCS help thingy and look for the section called 'creating a tileset mini manual'.
2. At the bottom of that section you would see some files you can download to start with.
3. Download the file called 'stencil.pcx'
4. Open that file in PSP
5. Go to 'colors->save palette' and save the file as Jazz2.pal (or whatever you want to call it)
There, now you have the colors to JJ2. This is what your palette would look like if you choose to re-map it. You are allowed to add your own colors underneath those colors of JJ2. Anyways, that means if you decrease your color depth it should be to about 120 colors. Hmmm, lemme use that point to point thingy to explain how to fix the bug and finish your tileset.
1. The first thing you did was make the tileset in 24-bit. That's fine by me, all you need to do now is decrease the color depth to 120 colors
2. To do that, go to colors->decrease color depth->X colors. In the next window that pops up you can choose the amount of colors you want (Do NOT include window's colors).
3. Okay, your tileset looks a lot more ugly now. Sometimes it can be a total shock, TRUST ME! You can try to make it more colors and drcease them manually, but that takes ages and doesn't always work.
4. Change all the black colors in the palette to #07000B to prevent yourself from pulling your hair out in the future. If you used black as the transparent color, then change it to #5700CB, it's a better color to use.
5. After that is done go to colors->save palette and save it as 'mytileset.pal' (or whatever you like)
6. Now all you have to do is put all the colors in 'mytileset.pal' into the free spaces in 'jazz2.pal'. You can do that with a program called Palette Suite (made by Toxic Bunny, there is a topic about it here in the JCS forum).
7. When you are done with that new palette in palette suite, save it as 'mytileset2.pal' (or whatever name you like).
8. Back inside PSP, on the your tileset (the one you reduced to 120 colors), go to colors->load palette and load 'mytileset2.pal'. Make sure you use the form of 'nearest color' and not 'palette entry' (I can't remember exactly, but you can figure it out).
9. Save the image, it should now be fixed, all you need to do then is make a mask and build it in JCS (do NOT choose the re-map tileset palette feature).
OTHER NOTES:
You mentioned a textured background, the textured background must be 32 colors. Those 32 colors must be in palette entries 176-207. Make sure your background uses all 32 of those colors. If not, add the 32 colors somewhere else in your tileset. If your background is still buggy, it is because the colors of the background are used somewhere else in the palette. To get rid of that all you need to do is remove that color somewhere else (of course it is not needed because it's already i the background). If the color is one ofthe colors in the Jazz2 palette, then you have a problem. Change your background color using hue settings (colors->adjust->hue, saturation, lightness). You must be in 24-bit to do that. One way to do it is to leave palette entries 176-207 open (put plain black there or something) and excluse the background until you are done with it. You can then just add the 32 colors in the palette with Palette Suite and stack the background in your tileset after you loaded the new palette.
Wow, it's finished, that is one LONG post. Must be one of my longest yet. Oh well, I'm just glad to help. I just assumed that that is your problem. If it isn't, give me more details and I will be glad to help.
