I'm not sure about player 2 looking different. Dig Dug himself has that skin tone in the first game(Every game after that, however, has him with a caucasian skin tone... Except for Dig Dug Arrangement which is basically the first game with more varied monsters and powerups.) I think I came up with her apearance just kind of randomly.
And as for the ponytail- lets just say I like drawing ponytails and be done with that. /\  /\
