I'm not taking that bet.
Jack grabbed the airboard that Firefox handed him, leapt on it, and flew out the window, Firefox following closely. They headed at top speed towards the small town of Taffrith, which luckily wasn't far.
After a few minutes Jack spotted Sasha's pale wings flashing in the dark sky. They pulled up next to him, and the winged rabbit spun and drew his blade. He grinned when he recognized them.
"Time to shed some blood," he said, before lofting up, hovering, and diving. Jack spiralled down after him, trying to see the Desekans and shockbots in the darkness.
Sasha's blade flashed once, twice, and a loud
zap signalled the end of a shockbot. Then Jack found himself in the middle of a flock of crows, and he fired rapidly, taking them by surprise. Several crows fell with loud squawks of surprise and a flurry of feathers before they were even aware of his presence.
Firefox dropped beside him. "I think Sasha, Tiger and Nobody took care of the shockbots," he called. "But swords aren't much use against crows ..."
A blue laser flashed by, dropping a crow and almost blinding Jack. He flew lower, and saw Tiger and Sasha on different rooftops, firing at the Desekans with deadly accuracy. Looking up, he realized that there were few left, and they were getting fewer.
When the last one fell, he landed. Firefox was already on the ground, talking to who Jack assumed was Nobody. Sasha was standing off to the side, inspecting his sword for any new chips. Apparently there were none, for he sheathed it and nodded to Tiger and N0, his manner suddenly cold.
"Well, that was interesting," Jack said. "What are Desekans doing off of Deseka?"
"Beats me," N0 said. "I'm Nobody - yes that IS my name, no cruel jokes please - and you're Jack Flash, right?"
"Yeah. What say we head to the Castle? Copper's expecting you."
"I figured she might be," Tiger said dryly. "My disappearing act just might have warned her."
"I guess so," Firefox said. Jack noticed that Sasha had quietly left.
The world froze and turned grey for a split second. Then, just as suddenly, they were at the Castle.
"Nice trick, that," Jack said appreciatively. Tiger nodded.
Copper came over, Sasha and Kaz trailing behind. Jack wondered how Sasha had gotten there that fast.
"Well, that was quick," she said. "Jack, I've gotta run. I'm sorry."
"That's okay," he said. "We'll manage."
"Defalcon, Acid, Electrik and Ziran should arrive tomorrow. A few others might come along too ... feel free to recruit anyone you need to."
"Sure," he said. "Thanks, Copper."
"Don't thank me yet," she said. "You may end up cursing the day you ever met me."
This is my last chapter for a while. The computer's getting packed tomorrow. Gah.
I'll see you all when I make it to London
