The trick is to vary the distance of the red and blue areas relative to their distance from our eyes... Or somehting.

Closer things will have the red and blue a different distance apart than farther things. What is going on is that the image is split into two sections and both eyes sees the image from a different prospective, just like if it was a 3D image. I hope this helps.
