Hm... the idea about the smilies with the robotty enemy sorta thing reminds me of a (seemingly dead) webcomic, City of ASCII, where the heads of all the characters were simply the appropriate smilies, oriented to which direction they were facing. Default was happy.

So, that character sounds interesting, at any rate. :-)
