I have a really hard time imagining a Jazz RPG that doesn't have more in common with fan fiction than with the real Jazz Jackrabbit. The story in the Jazz games is superfluous candy there to add a bit of personality and flavor to the real heart of the games: blazing fast action. The essence of the Jazz games is the ability to run like the wind, take huge leaps, and blast everything in sight. You couldn't capture that very well in an RPG.
Jazz in 3D, I could handle if it was pulled off well, and after Sonic Adventure, I can certainly imagine it being pulled off well. I would almost even be okay with JJA, except that the switch-hunting and having to STOP for a long time to take out a lot of the enemies bothers me. If it were another game, it wouldn't, but it doesn't feel right for Jazz.
Jazz = speed + guns + insanity

Agreeded. I was originally drawn into Jazz by its funness, an RPG just wouldn't be fun for me and JJ was designed as a platform action game not a slow paced RPG.
