I don't know a great deal about digital imaging, but a graphics program that lets you save as GIF or PNG should let you choose a "transparent" colour. You may have to go into options or something, but it will be there somewhere. Just pick a colour that shows up only as the background, and nowhere else in the image. For example, I could make an image with a blue background, save it as a GIF with blue set as the transparent colour, and when viewed in a web browser it would show up as transparent.
