Some people will make bizarre versions, and they will end up being unsupported, since no-one cares about them. The most reasonable implementation of the source, worked on by the smart developers, would obviously end up being the one used by most. The people who choose to install "Jazz 2 with Pokémon sprites" or "Jazz 2 with endless health" would probably be in the minority, and their games wouldn't be compatible with the majority. They would be isolated.
