Alright, I've said it before and I'll say it again: THE SERVERS ON THE LISTS ARE NOT YOURS. YOU DO NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER THEM.

I've also said this before:

Unreal and Unreal Tournament have internally-managed servers, meaning that the servers on the master server list are owned and maintained by the people running the servers. Jazz 2 was once like this, but when the new server lists came into place, the new communists list server owners got the stupid idea that the stuff on the lists was theirs.

Allow me explain how the list server works as opposed to the server, (WA)

A connection to the list server is sent on port 10053 (TCP):

07 (L) (I) (S) (T) 01 01

where a letter in (brackets) is ASCII.

A list server will send a packet back. This will be seen as:

(size) (?) (IP in hex, reversed) 27 (Server name)

The second byte is, as of yet, unknown. The output could be completely random.

A server will actually send data to the list server:

(size, which is always 0x44) 27 (Server name. There is a null space until 0x23 bytes in the
packet. 0x23 is 0x01.) (player limit) (gametype, add 0x01 if private) 32 31

The server will then listen on port 10052 for incoming connections, and when one is received, the server starts sending game data.

Ports 10053-10057 are thus not game related, and are only used by the list servers to list and delist games and provide information. The server is providing the game, and the list server only provides a few bytes.

As for crashing, it doesn't affect the server lists in any way, besides occasionally leaving a pinging server. What it does affect is the server providing the game, which will usually collapse if not correctly protected. The game goes down, and the list server is not affected. As I've pointed out before, the games have nothing to do with the list servers and are therefore the responsibility of the individuals maintaining and hosting the servers, not some (guy) in England.

I suggest the solution to this whole crashing problem is just to give people links to peerguardian and a list of IPs that are causing trouble so that they can fix problems with their servers from there. This whole thing about reporting crashers so they can get their access limited is total bull, as the people can easily find proxies to access the lists on port 10057.

And why are you wondering why I started crashing? Well, just read the paragraphs above. I don't believe that a game should be run by a bunch of (people) who think the world is theirs and that they own everything. This game should be run by the people who host the servers and provide the entertainment that was once Jazz Jackrabbit 2. It was a really fun game to play for a while, but you ruined it. Grow up, and start to realise the world doesn't revolve around you.
