That doesn't mean blindly taking stabs in the dark. What sets experiments apart from guessing is the scientific process. It doesn't start with a trial, but an observation of a pattern (e.g. lots of comics with kittens are popular), followed by a hypothesis (quantity of kittens is related to popularity), and then experimentation (a comic taking place in KITTENLAND). In the most basic sense, it's about making educated guesses wherever there is education available to guess by.
