I think the fairness comes from the fact that there are no guidelines. Art is all about warrenting a reaction. Your goal is to get votes from the battle, and you can do this by making people go "ooooh", "hahahaha", "hmmmm", or "omg". If you can get a reaction, any reaction, people are more likely to support you than if it just makes people say "oh, so he lobbed a grenade" or "oh, so he shot fire". There's an air of surreality to FoG; it's monolithic, it's mechanical, it's gelatenous, and Birdie's exaggerated perspective and large images compliment this perfectly. FoG makes a >O face as it lashes its spiky black tongue through innocent kittens. It's a definite "oooh".
If you don't think you can outdo it in the "ooooh" department, you can try to outdo it in another. It's all about fighting apples with oranges... or something. I butchered that analogy.
