I'll try to give you some actual help. I'd imagine you could only get as far as this screen:
And if you press enter with "Start Game" selected, JJ2 crashes. Similarly, pressing enter with "Change Player 1" selected gives the same exact crash. So the problem doesn't have anything to do with connecting to the lists. If the game didn't crash, you would have seen this screen:
Specifically, your problem comes from JJ2 being unable to display the text that would go below "control:" such as "Keyboard 1" in the above picture. I would guess there's a problem with the language file your JJ2 is currently using, and it might not crash if you use a different language--in my opinion this is at least worth a try. You can also try reinstalling JJ2 if you haven't tried this already.
