Hello all!
I'm a JJ fan and I skimmed through this post - I'm aware that bringing back a game from the ashes is a tough job - I tried it myself with another game. Problem is you need to start from scratch, make a storyline, create models, textures then code etc.
(I hope that what I'm about to say isn't common knowledge, otherwise I'll look like a right (-)(-)(-))
Today, I managed to download the unreleased demo of Jazz Jackrabbit 3. As far as I understand, this is the demo that World Tree Games showed to Epic, to try and raise interest in the game.
The demo contains a fair few areas of the game, a couple of baddies and 2 weapons. From playing the demo, it's clear that the game is a modification of the game Unreal (even some of the enemies behave the same), and also comes with UnrealEd.
This demo will quite possibly be a big boost for the JJ3 efforts, because now instead of having to make everything yourselves, you have a solid foundation from which to work on - an already working game, based on well known technology (Unreal) and loads of assets and an editor.
I've just finished uploading the demo to RapidShare - it's 100MB and split into 2 parts. You'll need WinRAR to extract the parts.
To run the game, just extract and then in the game folder go to System/Jazz3d.exe. The only niggle is that loading saved games doen't work - but maybe once people have a look at this, someone might be able to fix it.
The editor is located under System/Jazz3ded.exe. However, before you run the editor there's 2 things you need to do.
First, download the file
TABCTL32.OCX (download link
here), copy it to your WINDOWS\System32 folder, then go to Start->Run and type in
regsvr32 tabctl32.ocx. This will prevent the editor from crashing when you try to rebuld the level.
Secondly, in order to test your levels (File->Play Level), you need to make another copy of Jazz3d.exe and rename it to UnrealTournament.exe.
That's it - I hope this contribution will help you guys make something we can call Jazz Jackrabbit 3. I'd be happy to help myself - have some experience in mapping and a bit of scripting for the Unreal engine.
