To play online, you needs internet :P

A LAN is if you have several computers connected together (They might also share one internet source) and can communicate with one another. hence, "Local Area" LAN mode are more for "Private Partys" with friends on nearby computers in the same building (Internet players (I don't think anyway) cannot join LAN games).
