It may be worth mentioning that Medivo2 has only twelve coins in it, so bigger numbers for the warp would be a problem.

This is, of course, how JJ2 used to work. The Continue screen didn't work online. But there's no functional difference between seeing the Continue screen and simply leaving the server and rejoining. There is no obvious way to punish running out of lives that can't be beaten by leaving the server and rejoining.
