Reasonable but out of scope unfortunately, JJ2+ doesn't touch the character select code at all.

Saving isn't the problem, loading is the problem. If you do that, you can't load the level afterwards, because JJ2 won't know where to find it. That said, I'm having trouble reproducing what you're describing, can you go into more detail?
