A hit itself is just a request from the server for a file. So images, zipped files are all hits. With all the images on an HTML page you get a lot of hits from one visit.

That's why you gotsa check the log to see who's visiting, where they came from, and how many time's they've visited. That's a better way to see if it's growing.
You should put on a counter hidden on the main page that counts unique hits.
