Hardware acceleration in JJ2 was never a great option because it disabled some visual effects, particularly lighting and transparency. In some operating systems it even has the opposite effect of completely tanking the framerate. As the number of new visual options available in JJ2+ increased, eventually it stopped making sense to include the option at all, so it was dummied out of that menu and removed everywhere else.
