How To Choose The Best Heavy Duty Sewing Machine To Make Your Own Clothes

How To Choose The Best Heavy Duty Sewing Machine To Make Your Own Clothes

The problem with our modern days is that we have so many choices that a newbie will probably feel overwhelmed when it comes to choosing what the best for them is.

A sewing machine is so versatile that you can make a wide range of things with it, from quilting, craft making, to garments. The problem is, a machine that is great for quilting isn’t necessarily good for dressmaking.

I have been making my own clothes for so many years and I realize that dressmaking doesn’t require a high-end machine. Of course, if you want to decorate your garment with intricate embroidery patterns, an expensive machine with hundreds of options fits the bill. However, for most seamstresses, a basic or midrange machine is more than enough to make beautiful clothes.

Stitches

For construction sewing, look for a heavy duty sewing machine with the following stitches:

-Straight stitches: to hem and seam.

-Zigzag stitches: can be used to finish a raw edge.

-3-step zigzag stitches: for fixing in elastic bands and mending.

-Blind stitches: for hemming and they don’t show up on the right side of the garments.

-Overlock stitches: for stretch fabrics, these stitches can neat the seams.

-Stretch stitches: handy for jersey fabrics. When the fabric stretches, the stitches won’t break.

For buttonholes, choose one of the following:

-1-step-auto-sizing: This function can produce a buttonhole that matches the size of the one you intend to use. You use it by placing the button into the receptacle in the presser foot (this is not the ordinary one you usually use, it is a foot for making buttonholes). The holes are then created automatically in one session. If you have a machine with this function, expect to have a perfectly shaped buttonhole.

-4-step: If you choose a simple model, it may have this function. At stage 1, a side of the hole is sewn. When it turns to stage 2, the bar-tack is made. Stage 3 sees the other side made. In the final stage, the last bar stack is sewn.

-The basic models usually have the 4-step buttonhole while a more advanced machine might have the 1-step. If a simple machine is what you are looking for, check CraftsSelection website for some suggestions.

Presser Feet

In most cases, the standard presser foot that comes with your heavy duty sewing machine can handle almost anything. But if you have specific feet for certain jobs, the outcome might look nicer and neater, not to mention time-saving.

-Zipper foot: As you may have guessed, this is a foot for inserting a zipper.

-Overcast foot: it supports overcast stitches. It can also be a seam guide to help you produce straight stitches. With it, your fabrics are less likely to curl in.

-Blind stitch foot: this foot also helps maintain a straight seam. With this one, you can line the strike point with a needle so that the seam doesn’t show on the right side.

-Button sew-on-foot: Help sew buttons on the garments. Can save you a ton of time.

-Narrow hemmer foot: for narrow hems, which look great on dresses and blouses.

-Walking foot: For fabrics that can stretch, slip, or has a pile. A walking foot can be the answer for tricky garments. For jersey fabric, which is stretchy, without a walking foot, the seams can curve or wave. If you want a flat seam, make use of this foot. For slippery fabrics, the lower layer will be fed more by the feeding dog than the upper, making your seams pucker. The walking foot, in this case, helps both layers to travel at the same pace through the machine. If you also quilt, this foot is great for that too. Because quilting projects usually have three layers.

Mechanical Or Computerized Heavy Duty Sewing Machines

Unlike your mother and grandmother, now you have the choice between computerized and mechanical sewing machines.

The former can automate a lot of steps in sewing so it will take the burden off your shoulders. Some models can embroider and let you upload your own patterns into it.

A regular mechanical sewing machine cannot do these cool tricks but they come at a more reasonable price and are also more suitable for beginners’ budgets.

However, for seamstresses who have to deal with a lot of sewing work, the best heavy duty sewing machine for home use is more suitable. If you are on the lookout for one like that, read this review.

Basic Mechanical Sewing Machines

A basic mechanical sewing machine can handle simple garment-making, repairing your clothes, some alterations, and furnishings.

The majority of such machines have straight and zigzag stitches. Some others have blind hem overcast and stretch stitches.

Remember the buttonhole function I talked about earlier? A basic model usually comes with 4-step button making.

Mid-Range Mechanical Sewing Machines

With a sewing machine of this range, you will have more stitch options and sometimes a few built-in decorative stitches.

About buttonhole making, depending on the models, some machines have a 1-step buttonhole while the other has a typical 4-step. With that many benefits in one machine, expect to pay more for a mid-range model.

As I said earlier, with a computerized model, the machine can do most of the work for you, while with a mechanical one, the decision is yours to make.

For example, when you choose a stitch type, you have to think about how to set its length and width. The next step is to set the tension according to the type of fabrics you are using. That’s not it, you have to think about what presser foot to use too.

However, as long as you stick to what the manual instructs, you will be fine. But if you do just one thing wrong, the result might not look so good.

Basic And Mid-Range Computerized Sewing Machines

If a computerized heavy duty sewing machine is what you are looking for, there are plenty of basic to midrange models that don’t require you to stretch your budget much. However, you don’t need a model that packs thousands of stitches, that is way too much for dressmaking.

In fact, some computerized machines are quite reasonable-priced, but you need to be careful when choosing one. To help you with that, here are some Top Heavy Duty Sewing Machines to help you with sewing thick fabrics.

Hey there and welcome!

I personally see the Bash event as a means to try out the latest multiplayer levels with a relatively large amount of players, something that's hard to setup outside of planned events. Competitive multiplayer usually sticks to a limited selection of levels. It's also nice to chat and relax with 'retired' players that may decide to join for the occasion.

Slightly outdated info on the Bash
The level packs that were hosted during past iterations
The 20th anniversary web portal has some Bash info as well

Also, the latter Bashes have some gameplay recorded on YouTube. That should give an impression of the chaos gameplay to be expected. Here's some footage from this years Bash.
