I'm thinking about making my tilesets by modeling them instead of drawing them by using Caligari's trueSpace. then drawing

the textures for the modeled tiles using

Paint Shop Pro 7.02. Do you think this

is a good idea?

Done before. Actually, Ninja Dodo's Lost World tileset is a good example of what nifty tilesets you can make using Truespace.

yup.

However, usually you can't just take the stuff you rendered and compile it to a set. You often still have to resize objects so they fit on tiles and edit them by hand so they repeat properly .

Also using 3d rendered tiles means planning the pallete carefully. I would advise you to stick to a number of different shades and use those. Because of Jazz's color limitations it's very hard to have both the whole rainbow of colors AND light and dark variation.

But on the whole it's a great way of making different looking tilesets.

Good luck!

I know... I reccomend 8 shades of each colour at the max. You don't want to run out of pallete space.
