Lightbulb Christmas Server Event

I was just reading threads about Christmas Levels and such, and an idea hit me.

How about a Dedicated Christmas Server from say the 15th of December till the 26th. Everyone could submit there christmas levels before the 15th, we make them into one massive cycle (Battle), and then leave a Dedicated Server going.

We could set it up like we set up the Bash's before, with a admin team keeping an eye on the server, and reloading it if it crashes.

This is just an idea.

Whatcha think?

Perhaps, or maybe we could have a selection of levels on the run up to christmas, then on the 25th we change the level set over?

Although I know from my own experiences that after the 26th, christmas is kinda over, and its all looking towards the new year. The run-up to christmas is more of the christmas celebrations stuff I find.

Ok, just got a moment to talk to Frank, and heres what we concluded:

What makes the Bash events and such popular as such, is because they only happen once a year, and they run for say a week or so.

So to make it so people should hopefully come in the Xmas server and make it have a fair few players were make it only last a week or so. So where thinking the 20th, till the 28th, as that covers just before xmas and after xmas.

Level wise, we should have CTF and Battle and perhaps switch them every now and again. Hopefully that should also give level creators a chance, we could also use some old classics as well, although some new ones in the mix would be great.

If someones interested (like Blackraptor did for the bash), of selecting and preparing levels, we would be greatful.

Version wise i think its best suited as 1.23, as TSF users can join it as well with a patch.

So there we go, thats a start

I like it. I'm also making a battle Christmas level and it'll probably be done before the 15th. I'd be honored to see it in the server.

I have already prepared a level for Nim's server, a christmas CTF level.

I don't think you should use any old levels, only if they're old classics really suitable for christmas... After all, this is a christmas server event so no "normal" levels.. Make it something special.

Edit: Would anyone like to help and beta-test before the christmas server is up?

I'm sure all of the levels would be Christmas themed, meaning they'd use a Christmas/Snowy tileset, or they'd somehow be linked to Christmas.

What about having this run during the twelve days of Christmas? That is starting on Christmas day (Dec 25) and ending on the day before Epiphany (Jan 6). I mean.. that'd actually make sense to have a Christmas server event during Christmas, but who ever makes things make sense? :P

Perhaps, in england we dont really celebrate the twelve day thing, hence why im asking for your views.

In england, people tend to Celebrate christmas, from like the beginning of the month, but that would be to long to do a server, but from about the 15th onwards, everyone has christmas trees, every shop you walk into has xmas music, and decorations up and all that, so do you think its worth also starting the server BEFORE christmas, or from christmas onwards? or both.

12th day? What 12th day?

Anyway, I said in a topic some days ago that almost the whole of the TF clan is making two Christmas lvls, one battle and one CTF. I'm 50% done with my battle lvl and I'm planning on doing my CTF lvl on the 15th of December. After that, if there's time, I'll make a Christmas assault lvl. Is there any chance that you're nice enough to host ALL of TF's lvls, Nimrod?

Sure, although I will need permission to edit them to put them in a level cycle with all the others

The more Christmas themed levels the better

I think the Christmas server should be between the 15th and the 26th.

Also, in the US, Christmas-themed stuff (christmas music, sales, etc.) start before Thanksgiving. So yeah.

@Nimrod: I've "asked" them all not to password their lvls. I'll also tell them about it on the TF forums, which, btw is at forums.totalfreaks.com and Flash's brand-new site is at www.totalfreaks.com

I assume after you get them ordered up you'll put passwords back on them so lamers can't steal them. Right?

Dunno, I guess so, if the author asks.
But these days, 80% of jazz'ers run cracked JCS's that ignore the security packet..

Is there anyone else who wants to deal with levels, or am I gonna end up doing it? :P (collecting them, making cycles, etc)

It's the same in America, but the reason for it has to do with the commercialization of Christmas. I rather dislike how events get grossly changed for overwhelming commercialization purposes, particularly with Christmas. So for something that doesn't require selling something before Christmas day, I'd rather go with a more traditional schedule.

Hmm...

You could put some small line of code in each level, corrupting the level if it's modified by a cracked version of JCS. Then again I know jack about this stuff.

Exactly, but anyways, lets keep to the topic

Still stuck on the days, as if the server goes on for to long, it may *lose* its appeal.

I wonder how many ppl will play on christmas day, everyone will be busy eating turkey

No, got some levels from CB, managed to get the Epic levels, and TF's are all making levels and hopefully they will all get added

And if anyone else wants to submit levels, feel free to, Battle or CTF

So if were going for the traditional christmas celebrations (the 12th days), shall we start on xmas day, or do you think it will be better on christmas eve?
