Oh yeah this thread...
Um, an update on my life:
I am getting married, about 10 days after the end of the world.
So if you had noticed that I had kind of stopped coming around, well it's not going to get better any time soon...
The end of an era, for me. Goodbye internet, hello life!

Where to begin? I'll probably start 2.5 years ago and go chronologically from there:
  • Tied the knot
  • Bachelor's degree in pure mathematics
  • Diagnosed with testicular cancer
  • Got an orchiectomy (so my third time under the knife)
  • Three months of chemotherapy
    • This resulted in rather frequent visits to JCF actually, since there was pretty much nothing to do
    • Got started on an OpenJazz2. Mainly as reverse engineering practice
  • Hard disk crashed and lost everything
  • Honours degree in discrete mathematics
  • Job applications and stuff
  • Landed a job as a software engineer
    • I thought this was awesome given that I had not taken a single class in programming or engineering
    • Notably, Google invited me up to Sydney for an interview but I ended up turning them down (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ (for medical reasons)
  • Finally decided that I wanted to recover some photos from aforementioned hard disk
    • Went to a hard disk recovery company, they quoted $700
    • Recovered most of my stuff anyway using ddrescue and PhotoRec (grand total of $0.00)
  • Found lots of cool JJ2-related stuff I was working on
    • Thought the community would be dead and was like "mehh I'll go over to JCF and post these up in case anyone's interested"
    • Discovered that all is well and alive

That pretty much sums up my last 2.5 years. Now when I'm not doing work-related stuff I'm mostly solving Project Euler problems, or participating in any one of the various puzzle hunts (or writing my own puzzles).

Welcome back Neo! My god, that's a serious update right there.
Awesome that you actually got a job as a software engineer that way. Though probably all of the JCF could convince them you're an excellent programmer if they would have had any doubt. =)

The harddisk crash is a pity. You remembered me that I should make a backup of mine. Glad you recovered your data though!

Yup, all the metastases appear to have disappeared (shrunk), but I'll still be under surveillance for the next four years or so. Peter MacCallum is a really amazing place!

Apparently software engineering is completely different from computer science though. It's really more about code maintenance and proper documentations etc.

I invented several sports recently. I will try to describe them unofficially.

Plinko wallball
Based on the rules of wallball, played with a tennis ball. Meaning throw the ball at the wall, and someone can catch or find the ball. If you hold the ball, and the ball touches the ground before it bounces off the wall, you are out, but you may rejoin once the ball bounces off the wall. Scoring is based on how many times the ball bounces off the wall in a given time period. Teams take turns trying to get high score.

However in plinko wallball the wall is actually a potted plant skateboard rollercoaster. The player with ball tries to score a point by bouncing the ball off the potted plant skateboard rollercoaster. Hitting skates counts for one point and if the ball lands on the skates without bouncing off it is five points. The defending player without the ball may kick the skates anywhere within the field of play. However if the skates hit you or your foot by accident, you can call to tag out and stop play as a timeout. When the tennis ball bounces off skates, whoever recovers it becomes offender.

It is possible to replace the potted plant skateboard rollercoaster with an upside down Frisbee. Potted plant skateboard rollercoaster is loud and cracks, but upside down Frisbee is not so big in diameter.

Pool basketball
Albeit not my invention. Mostly just like basketball, only played in a pool of water, except dribbling is not required. Dunking is not allowed in this sport, but all forms of swimming are allowed.

Puddleball
Similar to HORSE in basketball. First player has to throw any type of ball into the puddle from a distance. Second player throws the ball into the puddle from the same distance. Whichever player's throw makes the bigger splash gains a point. Next round they switch first and second throws.

Hillball
One player pitches a ball at a mountain range. The collision between ball and hill must be audible. The next player pitches the ball and tries to create the same audible pitch with the collision between ball and hill. This game cannot be played in darkness.

Chalk
Holding chalk makes you winner. Not my invention either.

Paper and pencil cricket
Like cricket version of paper football. Roll a piece of paper into a ball. Other player or players hold a pencil. Pitcher pitches paper ball to a batter and whoever picks up the paper ball gets to throw it away. Group invented sport.

Wallzipperbinder study
This game includes a binder that is closed on both sides. Meaning it is a zipped up binder or a Velcro locked binder. Every player must have their own zipperbinder. All binders preferably are empty of reading materials and other objects to promote featherweightedness of the zipperbinder. Players throw their zipperbinders at the wall as high as they can. The zipperbinder that touches the wall at the highest point on the wall gets high score. Players can rebound anyone else's zipperbinder and throw the next zipperbinder at the wall. At the end of the game you are allowed to trade binders if mutually agreed upon. But trading homework or other things is not recommended. One variation is wallzipperbinderfrisbee, in which the binder contains a Frisbee.

Missionless risk
The sport depends on the ability of a ball to balance on a platform. Roll dice and try to knock the ball off the platform. Moving the platform while the ball remains in balance is called migrating. Moving the ball and platform when you are not about to roll dice is a retroactive moving screen charge.

The objective is to be peaceful and safe, happy and attentive, hydrated and stretched out.

Since I haven't been active on this forum for years, and some of you might still remember me from when I was still an annoying spammer kid, I've decided to post here now

To summarize the last couple of years and a half of my life:

After graduating high school, I got accepted at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and moved there to study Computer Science. I was also in a relationship for a short period of time. I've been very keen on learning foreign languages in my free time. I've been most dedicated to learning Dutch and Polish. I'm almost fluent in Polish. In fact, I'm living in Warsaw, Poland right now - staying in Poland for one academic year for a student exchange program. I travel a lot and want to explore the world as much as possible while I still have time for that.

IconGuy here. It's been so long I had to join my account with Nonomu198, which is by the way the nickname I went by while playing Jazz.

Disclaimer: I'm experiencing high fever at the moment and feeling sappy, I'm going to share some life story with ya'all.

I spent most of my time 2007-2009 with JJ2 open. I was amazed by being able to communicate with people from other cultures, since the game worked relatively fine even when playing with people worldwide. The community was generally older than me, and I felt intelectually and emotionally stimulated by interaction with people who weren't adults for the first time in years.

Eventually people stopped playing the game, relationships with people I've met online disntigrated, and I started playing TF2, which sort of replicated my experiences with JJ2: Having fun with other human beings of my age group, which for me was a very big deal. Tying my life to its online community resulted in the same fate: Relationships eventually died, and people stopped playing the game.

In 2012 I'd dropped out of higschool, finally succumbing to the stress resulting from the fact I had no friends and was constantly bullied since 3rd grade. My parents' divorce didn't help.

I didn't kill myself because I watched My Little Pony and hung out with its internet community.

After three-ish years of reverting to vegetative state, resulting from aforementioned dropping out of life, I had decided that absolutely nothing can be worse than rotting at home. I started drawing to make the demons go away, which through some miracle netted me internet romance.

I started working out again, started taking antidepressants, and felt positive about the future for the first time since early childhood. But then my body went derp by suddenly collapsing. I was after a long time disagnosed with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic state of pain and tiredness, resulting from my mental breakdown a few years prior. In the beginning I was completely paralyzed, but fortunately for me the body on most cases starts a gradual, if never complete healing process.

Powered by my romantic relationship I started working part time in Tel Aviv University as the industrial engineering lab assistant, which basically meant preparing the courses for first year. I learned about myself that I'm a fast learner in technical subjects (taught myself to program in Python, as it was required for a course), but I also grew distaste for the academy because I felt the subjects were so easy a random guy from the street could prepare the courses (me), and the person who got me working there promised she'll get me a paying job but it ended up being completely voluteer work. I know that industrial engineering is just a shitty subject, but that's how I felt back then on any prospects of academy.

I realized that in order to materialize my internet relationship I needed money, since my girlfriend lives across the ocean. So I started taking paying jobs. I didn't last in the supermarket for more than two weeks, and ended up working a year as a film editor's assistant, a purely technical job that requires clicking buttons. The money was shit, the job was shit, the boss was shit. One good thing happened, I was recommended by said boss to go to a QA course.

I thought QA was shit but did it anyway, figuring I could see what this "hi-tech" world looks like. Started working in a small tech company. QA was shit. Boss was awful and made me feel like trash.

I befriended a programmmer who saw potential in me. The day I quit my job he offered me a position as a programmer in charge of QA Automation. I took the chance.

I turned out to be a competent programmer, and programming ended up being the first job I didn't hate doing. I grew up being fasinated by the works of such as Neobeo in this community. Programming seemed like magic, and while I did learn it in high school I never had the push to actually program anything.

Fast forward to now. People I meet think I'm a lucky bastard to be an emplyed DevOps with zero years of college. The thing in my life that I'm glad for however is my girlfriend, whom I have already physically met a few times and can't wait to have a more permenant physical life with. I still wish I had more friends, but I find my relationship with her very fulfilling.

While I deeply regret wasting most of my life playing video games (sorry JJ2) instead of doing anything that teaches actual life skills, I'm glad to have taken part of this community. I know I was considered an outsider even here, what with my terse and honestly, looking back, idiosyncratic writing that tended to look mean. I cannot comprehend half of the stuff I had posted on this thread just six years prior.

I would like to thank you all for tolerating and even befriending tween and adolescent me. Learning English and basic human interaction from this community gave me a chance I never would have without the internet.

I mentioned this before a few years ago, but you guys who are art inclined are welcome to view my DeviantArt gallery https://www.deviantart.com/5kmoe. I haven't posted a lot in the past few years but I plan on doing it...

I'm aware I've posted on this thread in 2012, but I didn't know who Neil Cicierega is. This blows my mind, as a kid I had explored the depths of old J2O lore and always wondered about the mysterious Wakeman (mysterious to me anyway). My girlfriend is a huge fan of him. Small world!

Hey. Is this thing on? Hello?

Hey guys, just on a nostalgia trip, passing through. Married, job, almost 30 years old now looking for things I'd forgotten about on an old forum.
