Ye Olde Bedtime Stories

Greetings, passengers. This is your captain speaking.

Back in the old days, when I used to be a hardcore RuneScape player, I used to write a hell of a lot stories on the RuneScape forums. From what I have heard from everyone who read it, it were good stories. I'm currently writing another story... I'm thinking of sharing it here for those who might be interested.

First of all, I'll do a rewrite of my first story ever, the Legend of Zogorast (and sequels). I hope you will enjoy it.

Bedtime stories are a success even if they're boring.

Well, they aren't actual bedtime stories... Although they would do the trick...

I'll post something soon... I think I'll start rewriting Legend of Zogorast... It's an interesting tale once it progresses...

You can't keep it, mind. I need it back. :P

Anyway, it does sound intriguing. Here's hoping we see it soon.

Okay, I just wrote a piece on the RuneScape forums. Here it is:

-=[ Prologue ]=-

It didn't take long for Hans and Sarah Rond to decide. Varrock would be the perfect place to settle. No noise, no bypassing travelers... It was perfect. Sarah was having her baby soon, so they decided to build a house as soon as possible.

Back in 1710, Varrock was nothing more than a church and three farms. The General store was still under construction and only a few couples and younger people decided to build their house somewhere near the church.

"Hans!" Sarah moaned, "I think I'm going to deliver the baby..."
Hans ran inside, covered in sweat and dirt, holding his rake.
"I'll call a doctor... Or maybe the priest... I don't know... Our neighbours also have three children, they might be able to help too..."
Hans ran outside, paniced as he was, in search for someone with knowledge about pregnancy. Eventually, he called the neighbours. The mother of three told Sarah exactly how she should deliver with a few, simple instructions.

"I think I see a head there..." she said.

The next morning, the Rond family started their day bright and early. Well, at least early...

"Hans, will you bring little Zogoran, please? He's obviously hungry."
Hans got out of bed, mumbling a few nasty words and brought Zogoran to Sarah.
"There you go, little boy. I figured you could use a drink."
Hans looked up as he heard the rooster. It was morning already. That very moment, a gentleman dressed in white robes marched in.

"Say, you must be Hans and Sarah Rond, right?" he asked. Hans nodded.
"Great, I am the local doctor. Well, local, I had to come from Edgeville, but okay... I'm thinking of starting an apothecary here some day..."
Hans coughed loudly, mumbling "Yes, doctor?".
"Oh, forgive me, I'll get to the point. You see, I heard that you had a child yesterday. Mind if I examine it?"
Hans nodded gently. "Sure, go ahead. What are you examining anyway, doctor?"

..."to be continued..."

No no no; what he meant was due to odd atmospheric effects there was no noise at all. All those conversations were telepathic.

No noise. After all, it's not like people chatting in runescape makes actual NOISE (unless they added some interesting new features since I've last played).

"Well, I'm just making sure that it doesn't have any kind of disease." the man said. "Who knows... it may even be contagious..."

Hans turned around for a second. Sarah was still laying in bed, smiling at the doctor. The doctor cautiously took the child on his arm and opened his mouth. Hans took a seat on the edge of the bed. He and Sarah looked at eachother, smiling. "I bet he's all healthy." Hans smiled.

The doctor placed little Zogoran on the floor and reached for his pockets. The early bright morning sun reflected on the item. Before Hans and Sarah could clearly identify the item, the man aimed and fired an arrow. The arrow soared through the room, just over Sarah's head, in Hans' chest. Hans fell on the ground, trying to pull the arrow out. The dirt-brown floor turned crimson within a few seconds. It seemed like hours...
"Don't worry, Sarah, you won't suffer alone..." The man reloaded his crossbow and swiftly took out Sarah as well. He grabbed the child and walked out of the door. His boots were covered in blood, leaving prints on the pathway. With a quick whistle, a horse and cart stopped in front of the house. The man threw Zogoran in and got aboard. "I think that's enough for now... Let's gather them up..."

It didn't take long before they arrived at their destination. Just a little outside of Varrock was an old shed, filled up with children.
"Do you think this would be enough for an offering to Zamorak?" someone asked.
The man in the white robes jumped off the cart. "Yeah... I think this is going to be perfect..." He grinned as he took of his white robes, revealing the blood-red coloured Robes of Zamorak.
"Put the child inside, with the rest. I'm going to set it on fire right now..."

The man, now wearing his red robes, took his crossbow and lit the arrow. He chanted a few words and shot his arrow in the shed. It didn't take long before the whole thing caught fire.

All of a sudden, the shed exploded, spreading a green colour through the air.

Note: When I first wrote this, I couldn't think of any good names. Because of that, one of the main characters is called Frost, which has nothing to do with myself.

-=[ Chapter One: Actions of Despair ]=-

I couldn't remember anything... Just that flash... That bright, green flash... As if I was guarded with a mysterious power... Frost and I were practically the only citizens of Varrock who survived the Zamorak Child Offering... Six years back... I was still a baby back then... You'd say I remembered nothing... Strangely, I remembered a bright green flash...

"HEY! ZOGORAN!" Frost yelled when I approached the main gates of Varrock. "How was your night? The rooster woke me up too early so I tried cursing it! But, but, it didn't, eh, work... Much."

I lived with my uncle, Oziach, who lived in Edgeville, not far from Varrock. I just crossed the river Lum as Frost approached me. He still lived in Varrock. His parents were mages, just as Frost himself hopes to be one day, so they were able to defend themselves against the Zamorakian attack six years back. Frost, however, DID get kidnapped. Strangely enough, he also survived the blast... I always wondered if he had finally found some hidden abilities... Fire on itself doesn't cause huge, green explosions...

"Zogoran! Hurry up already! The General Store has been open for longer than an HOUR already!" Frost shouted across the street.

"Take it easy... It's quite a walk to Varrock, you know... Next time, you'll go to MY place..." I sighed and puffed. "Or just 'teleport', hehe..."

"Wait and see, Zogoran, it'll be a matter of time before I can teleport... Here, I'll show you..."

Frost grabbed a little pouch. Inside of it were a Law rune and some basic elemental runes. He rubbed them together. Suddenly, Frost had turned purple and shrunk. He became too small to see, untill he popped up again, not even a single step further.

"I told you I could do it!" He sighed.

"Okay! In that case, let's go to Edgeville!" I replied. I couldn't help grinning. His skills were so useless at that moment...

"No... I'll learn someday, though... General Store, now!" Frost shouted.

... more to be continued!

EDIT!

We walked through the bumpy streets of old Varrock. Lots of familiar people greeted us, like Reldo, the librarian. He was always nice to us. He would even let us lend a few books without bothering the math and identification.

"Hi, Reldo!" I said to him, as always.
"Ah, good afternoon, Zogoran. How nice to see you." He replied as usual. "Say, do you still have that book about the Shield of Arrav? Someone asked for it."
"I'll bring it to you tomorrow, I promise." I quickly replied.
Reldo nodded and walked on. Frost and I ran towards the General Store. Frost already took a golden coin from his pockets, just to check if he still had it.

"How can I help you, young tummywut?" The old storekeeper grinned.
"One bread please!" Frost said with all his enthousiasm and pride.
"I got a few right here, fresh from the oven!" the old man said. "I'll grab one for you."
He took the ladder and moved it to the higher shelves. He cautiously tried to climb up. He was really old, maybe too old for a job as a shopkeeper, but he still enjoyed every minute of it. Along the way to the shelf, he asked:
"Have I ever told you young lads about how my friend Oziach slayed a demon?"
Frost sighed. "Yes, mister. You..."
"I remember as if it happened yesterday..." The storekeeper interrupted. "The demon had this crimson red skin, huge white horns and a hand that could crush bone!" He rattled on. "Delrith was its name, I believe. Yeah, Delrith! Oziach still has the sword, I think... At least... Yeah, he should. Those were some times, boys... Demons fooling around and killing all the young whippersnappers in town... Not a fine thought, let me tell you..."
"Yes, sir. How awful it must have been..." Frost sighed, making sure the old man would get the hint and notice their hurry and irritation.

"You should pay your respects, youngster! I know I can talk for hours, but no need to sigh!"

Frost and Zogoran payed and quickly ran outside.

Why not? Another edit!
Frost took a huge bite out of his half of the bread. I just nibbled a bit, I wasn't all that hungry.
"Yeah, that story is pretty old, but Delrith is awesome." Frost said full of enthousiasm.
"Yeah, I guess... My uncle is legendary, man... Even I don't know the whole story, but yeah, he seems to have chopped off the demon's head with a Silverlight blade..."
"From what I've heard, he tied a feather to his left foot and tickled Delrith to death!" Frost argued.
"You're full of nonsense, Frost... That doesn't even make sense..." I calmly replied.
"Well... But still it's true!"
Frost and I kept talking, playing and most of all arguing untill the evening painted the sky light pink. There were clouds closing in and only a few stars visible.
"I hope it won't rain before I get home..." I said to Frost.
"Yeah... I'll see you tomorrow, right?"
"Sure."
I wandered off towards the first opening I saw in the gates of Varrock. It turned out to be the southers exit. I had to go west, not south...
"Sennividor! Vinniseth!" I heard someone shout. Near the south exit was a small dolmen with strange stones gathered all around it. It had been the same for years. This time, there were two men standing on the dolmen, dressed in red robes. You could easily tell that they were Zamorakians. They're language was incomprehensible for anyone from another religion. One of the men grabbed a tinderbox and set fire to the dolmen using Guam leaves. The flame turned dark and red... I figured it'd be best to turn around now and just don't meddle...

When I got home, uncle Oziach could tell I was a bit frightened.

"What's wrong, Zogoran?" he asked, while he poured in my favourite Guthix' Rest tea.
"Er... Well, I saw a few Zamorakians near that old dolmen."

Oziach dropped the teapot on the floor, spreading the bright green tea all over the floor. "I'm sorry, Zogoran," he said, "but I gotta go to Varrock for some time. Don't follow me. Stay here..." He grabbed his Silverlight and ran out.

AND another edit...

Oziach dissapeared out of my sight. The door slowly closed because of the wind. The creaking noise the door made was somewhat scary this time... Normally, I wouldn't bother, but it felt as if a little bug inside my skin ran up and down my spine.

A painful silence took the place of the creaking sound as the door had closed. The Silverlight trophy looked so awkward without the blade on it... Just a piece of wood with a golden edge on it... It had lost its glory. Its shine.

I couldn't just stay here... What if Oziach was in danger? What if he got himself hurt?

All of a sudden, I heard this awfully loud roar. Whoever made that sound sure was angry... It took only a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever... The bug on my spine seemed to stop running up and down... Now it was chewing on it. I couldn't help but to jump off my chair.

"I won't allow this to happen!" I shouted. I don't exactly know why I said that, there was nobody nearby anyway. I ran towards Varrock, as fast as I could.

When I finally reached the southern gates of Varrock, completely out of breath, I took a look at the dolmen. From behind an old oak, I could see Oziach, that was him alright. On the other side of the dolmen was a huge, bloodred creature. Lacking the knowledge to identify it, I assumed it was a demon. That moment, I remembered the storekeepers story. Could it be Delrith? Zamorak's Demon Delrith, the one who destroyed Varrock once before?

Oziach didn't seem to be winning this battle. Delrith was glowing a bright red colour, a fire burning in his eyes. His power increased quickly. Around him were a few Mages of Zamorak, keeping their distance, shanting in their unknown language.

I couldn't just stay there and watch...

I had to take action...

But what could I do? I was just a child. Not a mage, either. I was just a boy. Nothing more...

As I realised that, I heard a terrible scream from the battlefield. Oziach fell down...

I don't know how long I cried. It could have been a few seconds, but then again, it felt like an hour... Oziach was dead... My last remaining relative. What should I do next? WHY should I do something next? Wouldn't it be in vain? Who could take care of me now? So many questions... So little time... I must do what's right. Oziach...

It didn't take long before I felt this overwhelming feeling. I couldn't help otherwise than just run at Oziach. I looked at his face, most of it covered by his helmet. Not much of his face was still on the spot where it used to be. The blood filled his helmet as fast as a boat with a hole in it... Impossible to stop it in time...

Delrith and the Zamorakian mages were heading for Varrock. They all turned around at once and marched towards the southern gate.

"Now's my chance..." I whispered to myself. I took Silverlight with me and charged at the incredibly large demon. I managed to jump on his back and leap towards his head. Delrith turned his head around to look who was jumping on him. He shouldn't have done that...

I stood on his head, placing my feet firmly against his horns. I raised Silverlight, however heavy it was, and slashed right down his face. The cut was horribly wide, as if the sword had a devistating effect on the demon. The roar of Delrith was louder than I heard before. It wasn't all as frightening, either, it was a scream of pain. Once more I raised the blade, dropping it down on the top of his head, right between my feet. Delrith was done for. He fell down on top of one of the Mages of Zamorak. The other two managed to run away.

Then, something indescribable happened... I raised my hand and felt this... Strange power. My hand started glowing green... I remembered that colour. That same bright colour as I've seen once before. I placed my hand on Delrith's injured head and watched it vaporize... No scream was heard this time... Nothing but the sizzling sound of a puddle of demon blood...

Like, wowzers! Chapter TWO coming up!

-=[ Chapter Two: Nobody left to trust ]=-

"Oh my Guthix... Where the hell am I?" I said to myself when I finally woke up. I shouldn't have opened my eyes. The sunlight was burning in my eyes, as if someone stabbed me with a red hot poker.

"Wake up! We're going to be late!" someone shouted at me. I recognized that voice. It was Zogoran. "You shouldn't drink that much before going to bed, you know..." he said to me. As if I didn't know when to stop drinking...

Zogoran lived at our house now. My parents didn't seem to mind at all. They were rather concerned about him. In those tens years, both Zogoran and I did nothing else than train and help our parents growing crops. When we both turned 15, we got our very first job at the General Store in Varrock.

"So, young tummywuttes..." the old storekeeper coughed, "You'z wanna be working for me now, ey?"

"Yes, sir, we'd be very pleased to." Zogoran exclaimed. I didn't say anything yet, the shopkeeper would probably not give work to someone with a hangover...

"Your first assignement is easy... Just deliver this parcel to Luthas, East of Brimhaven, near the docks..."

"Wait a tic..." I said to myself. "Brimhaven, that's like, Karamja Island, right?"

"Yes, indeed." the shopkeeper answered. "Now where was I..."

"Zogoran, that's gonna take all day to get there... And we get paid per HOUR..."
"I know, shut up..." he answered to me.

"Well, that be all. You'z ready?" The shopkeeper punched in the air, as if he was exited.

"Yes, sir." I replied, also raising my fist.

The old man walked towards a pile of junk. Loads of empty boxes and crates were piled up. Underneath was a ladder, sticking out. The shopkeeper took hold of the ladder and raised it against the shelves. He swiftly brought down a parcel.

"Just make sure it arrived in one piece. We wouldn't want our costumers to complain..."

"You got it!" I shouted as I took the parcel and walked out. "Come on, Zogoran, I'll race ya!"

EDITz0rz
I started running, securely holding the package under my left arm. I thought I was far ahead of Zogoran, but at that very moment, he passed me and snatched the parcel. We both crossed the river Lum at Barbarian Village, directly heading south through Draynor. A little shortcut never did anyone harm, they say...

"Excuse me!" A rather old man tried to stop us. Zogoran and I stopped and asked what's wrong. "You see, I heard you guys are heading for Karamja?"

"Well, err, yeah..." I replied.

"Good. Could you please also take this package to Luthas, who lives at the eastern docks?"

"What a coincidence!" Zogoran exclaimed. "We're heading ther anyway. No problem."

"I'll give you a few coins for the boat, young lads." The old man offered.

"No, we're good. Thanks anyway." Zogoran said.

I took a quick look at the amount of coins the old man was holding. "Hmm..." I thought. "60 coins... That's enough for the trip back." I pondered for a second. "Well, we'll take it, anyway. Remember, we have to get OFF the island as well."

The old man grinned. "Very well." He tossed the coins right into my hand. The sun reflected on the coins, blinding me for a second. "So this is how wealth felt..." I thought. "Sixty coins was more than I ever saw on one pile. Then again, I was a poor kid... I could make a living selling runes on the market..."

I snapped out of my little daydream as Zogoran pulled my arm. "HEY! Wake up! We have a delivery to make!"

Once in Port Sarim, we took a short break in the Rusty Anchor Inn. You could smell piracy all over the place. The building was filled up with searots, pirates and mateys. Drunk people could easily be found under any random table.

"I'll have one Whisky, please." I said to the barkeep.
"That be costin' ye two pieces o' eight." I gave the man what he wanted and quickly drank my whisky. It tasted rather foul. Zogoran didn't drink anything... We left as soon as possible.

ANOTHER EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111
I hopped on the boat first. Zogoran followed, carrying both the shopkeeper's and the old man's parcel. He put them down as soon as he took a seat on deck.

"Cap'n!" Zogoran yelled. "When are we going to sail?"

A rather aged man with a long, black beard came out of a little cabin on deck. His left leg was replaced with a peg leg. One of his arms was nothing more than a little stump of flesh, wobbling every time he took a step forward.

"Ahoy, mateys, going to Karamja? We be sail'n in a few min'ts. Ju'z take yer seat 'n' pay dem bucanneers thirty golden dubloons, aye?" The captain went inside his cabin again, shutting the door with a slam. For some reason, there was lots of laughter coming from the cabin, assumingly just the captain being drunk.

"So, I wonder what's in that other parcel..." I said to Zogoran, who was staring at the crow's nest.

"Oh, err, I dunno... We shouldn't open it, really, it's a parcel for Luthas, after all."

He was right, although I was a little scared about the content... People tend to be scared of the unknown...

A deckscrubber came by and raised his hand in front of our faces. "Thirty will be e'ough fer both of ye, this time." His hand was covered in dirt... It didn't matter much, because I was not going to get the money back anyway. I dropped the coins in his hand, counting them, every piece.

"T'nks." He mumbled. He continued scrubbing untill the ship set sail.

Once at Karamja, we got off the boat and headed for Luthas straight away. It was not far from the docks. Halfway the road, you could feel the tropical warmth, the damp air and the rich aroma of bananas. Zogoran knocked on Luthas' door. From the backside of the house, a nicely tanned adult came around the corner.

"Were ye lookin' fer me?" He asked.

"Depends." Zogoran said. "Are you Luthas?"

"Yep. Owner of this nice banana patch right 'ere."

"We came to bring you a parcel with the regards from the General Store in Varrock. We also got this gift..."

EDITED AGAIN!!!

"A'ight, jus' put 'em down o'er here." Luthas mumbles. He turned around, grabbed an old sock from one of his drawers and took out a few coins.

"There ya go, lads, for the trip back. Boat's leavin' in half an hour." Luthas smiled, showing us his rotten teeth. "Thanks again."

We walked off his property, towards the pub on the other side of the road. "Soooooooo..." I sighed. "We got half an hour left... What shall we do?"

"Well, I don't know..." Zogoran said. "I don't really feel like drinking something now..."

"Nor do I... I'd say we check out the top of the vulcano while we're here anyway." Frost grinned. "That'd be so awesome."

"Ah, why not..." Zogoran said full of enthousiasm. "Maybe we'll even find something cool to bring home!"

A long, long walk through the jungle was nessecary to reach the vulcano. It wasn't smoking, thank Guthix, or else it'd be too dangerous and would Zogoran have made the smart, wise decision of not going there...

"Hey! I think I found a cave!" Zogoran shouted from the other side of the vulcano.

I rushed there as fast as I could. All of a sudden, I tripped over a dead tree stump and fell over. When I hit the ground, I noticed how hot it was... I was right above the boiling magma. My face was just a few feet away from the surface. A bubble of magma was about to snap right below me. I got up quickly and managed not to get hit, or more important, not to get maimed for life.

"Frost! You have to see this..." Zogoran whispered. I could barely understand him, but knew that I had to walk his way, slowly...

As I took a peek into the cave, I saw men dressed in red robes... Could it be a hideout for the Zamorak religion? Right beside them was a cage with a huge egg in it...

"Hey, that egg is way too big to be a bird's egg..." I whispered.

"Yeah..." Zogoran replied. "I think it's a dragon's egg... Why would they bring it here into the vulcano?"

Double post because of character limit:

It got silent for a minute... I just couldn't believe what I saw... The Zamorakians were planning another attack... Not just any attack... A dragon attack.

"Let's just stop them now! I got a few runes with me..." I whispered to Zogoran.

I was about to stand up, until Zogoran replied: "No... Wait... There are more troops coming from the cave..."

He was right... About 30 men in red robes walked towards the dragon egg. It was a horrifying sight. I could litterally feel the evilness at such a distance. It was as if their red robes were actually glowing... Or even burning.

"Hey..." Zogoran said. "What's that guy with the staff doing? You're the mage, do you know what he's doing?"

"Hmm..." I took a look at the staff, which was obviously a Zamorak Staff... I could easily recognize the emblem. "It seems as if he's remotely controlling something or someone... I couldn't quite say..."

"Hey, he's pointing towards Luthas' house..." Zogoran pointed at the docks.

"Wait... He's a Saradominist, right? This is no good, we have to warn him..." I started running down the vulcano, without tripping this time. I closed in on the docks, evading trees and branches everywhere. I shouted Luthas' name multiple times, but he couldn't hear me.

Zogoran was still on top of the vulcano. He saw me running and followed me. When he was about to chase me, Luthas' house exploded.

"What...? How could THAT have happened?" I said to myself.

I looked at the remains of the old house... It was nothing more than a smoking pile of wood... Few crates of bananas outside remained unscratched, while some were blown into the air, spreading yellow mush everywhere.

Zogoran finally managed to get to the docks too. "I think I know what happened... Remember that package? From the old man? I think... Yeah, we've brough explosions into Luthas' house..."

"I told you we should've opened it?" I said angrily. "Now it's our fault he's dead..."
------------------------------
"Don't worry... It's going to be alright..." Zogoran replied. "I mean, of course we brought the package in, but I doubt people will accuse us of killing him... Either way, we have to watch those Zamorakians..."

We both ran back to the vulcano. Once there, we saw a purple teleportation circle. "Too late..." I said. "But now we can check on the egg!"

Zogoran climbed down into the cave. "Stay here, in case they come back... I don't have a weapon on me, so you'll have to defend." I nodded.

I don't know how long I've waited... It seemed like a very long time... All I could think of was Luthas'... Poor man... I was also afraid that we'd be killed in return for bringing Luthas that package. I watched the smoke blow in the wind... It almost cleared away, then Zogoran came out of the cave.

"I found the egg alright... It's sealed behind some kind of magical forcefield..." Zogoran sighed. "I couldn't get close to it... They placed it over a little pool of lava, so it'll keep warm..."

"Maybe I can do something about it..." I tried to keep up hope.

"I doubt it..." Zogoran said. "The only thing we can do now is train and get stronger... It might hatch in about a month... Maybe even earlier..."

"I guess... We'll have to gather an army!"

"NO!" Zogoran interrupted. "If we tell everyone about the dragon, they will panic... Haven't you heard the tale of Ilverg?"

"Yeah... Those were some dangerous times..."

"Exactly! We cannot let that happen again... WE have to kill it... Not an army, WE..." Zogoran looked really serious about this.

"Alright... If just hope that this dragon is not related to Ilverg..."

Zogoran turned his head towards the ground. "Well, it is, actually... It's written on a stone tablet down there... Its name is Elvarg..."

"Dang... We don't have a choice but to train, I guess..."

"Indeed... You work on that Blizzard spell you've been bragging about... Make it work next time..."
